ire chief Mick Holmes will create a void in Hills not easily filled His long standing dedication to the protection of Acton and later Hills has not gone unnoticed nor unappreciated as evidenced by the praise being lavished upon him in recent weeks Volunteer Acton firefighters volunteer deputy chief and later volunteer chief of Acton first fulltime chief of Acton after the birth of Halton Hills and later Halton Hills fulltime chief its quite a record of service Unselfish service which has stretched over years The red fire station wagon zooming around town has become a familiar sight reassuring us and letting us all sleep easier knowing our fam ilies are safe because Mick and Actons volunteers are on the job While fire protection is a team effort that team is only as good as its leader Mick has been an outstanding leader both before and after his job as chief became his paid occup ation Mick has fought hard for the volunteers and the better ment of the fire department He hasnt won all the battles but more than a fair share and the department volunteers and community are all better for his victories And hes never forgotten his roots that of a volunteer who must juggle his work family and community life around the need to do a crucial job This awareness has made it easier for Mick to Tight for the volunteers with a passion Micks career of service has exemplified the efforts of all the volunteers When we honor Mick we also honor all the present volunteers and the dozens who have served the community m the past in this allimportant job When other communities of similar size are having to move to paid fire brigades Hills keeps going along ad mirably with volunteers saving the municipality and thus citizens countless tax dollars Its hard to imagine what kind of financial situation this town would be in without the service of the volunteers Our tax bills would either be substantially higher or else the level of all services appreciably lower So in bidding Mick a fond farewell as chief we are also thanking all the dedicated men who have ever held a hose in Acton What makes this community great is its volunteers and none are greater than the fire fighters Its nice to know Mick will remain living in Acton and when the fire siren blows fire fighters and citizens will still see him dropping by the scene no doubt lending a hand in some way from lime to time We will miss you Mick Holmes Our readers write Angry with bank Dear Sir I am writing this letter with the hope that you v ill publish It so many other people will be aware of this days gone by MEANDERINGS By Mabel Barkman Now if I can only U One of the most versatile vegetables today is the zucchini In preparation for a lot of them in the garden in late summer I have been trying them in various ways The ones in the stores now are not too exp ensive Sliced dipped in egg and crumbs with added salt and pepper and grated par- cheese and then fried brown on both sides they make a tasty and very quick vegetable for supper Chopped and fried with onions and mushrooms and then with the addition of ones favorite spaghetti sauce they make a good cover ing for pasta Grated and browned with bit of onion and mushrooms and added to beaten eggs tbey make a tasty omelet Many people make delicious bread and muffins with them Perhaps in time the zucchini will be come as popular our staple the potato Residents of McDonald are very pleased now that they have a new street sign As you may recall a new sign was spelled MacDonald angering all local homeowners Pat and Mary McKenzie gentle breeze and the rain drops smell the roses and hear the laughter of children Have you ever paused to say Thanks to God that created you and gave you these things to enjoy In this day and age when so many people struggle to make ends meet It Is nice to find someone who wants to help you instead of tear you down Do you realize that God has given us many things and sometimes we never thank Him for them He gave us legs to walk with a nose to smell with and most important of all He gave His only Son so we could have forgiveness from all sin and have an abundant entrance Into Heaven Have yon ever given God a chance to show you how He can help m jour situation He has control over every circumstance and has power to How about you Have you ever thought of giving But you say I have nothing to give I dont make much money and cant give to anyone else How about a cheery smile to someone that is sad How about sending a card to someone in hospital How about spending time talking to that elderly person that lives nearby and seems to be alone How about being kind to that neighbor down the street How about saying you will babysit the nextdoor neighbors children while she does the shopping You will be giving of yourself anil you will receive a bSsiiag The Bible states It la more to give than to receive Acts Also it states that If we even give a cup of cold la the name of a
