Georgeto Wednesday Aug Elbow grease main ingredient in restoring rail cars 107 and 416 The winding down for five students employed under two youth grants at the Halton County Radial Railway But that doesnt mean the work I completed For Kathy and David Johns and Elisabeth KoebneL the scraping and polishing of the old railway and transit cars will continue into the winter The Railway something the two Johns teenagers have been born Into their parents being active In the Railway Organization The past few summers they have been lucky enough to be paid to do what they have done all their lives Kathy Elisabeth of Acton High School and Chlchy are working at the Railway near Eden Mills on an Experience grant David and Paul also of Acton High School are working under the auspices of the Ontario Youth Employment Program While the two girls have been busy strip ping the three to five coats of varnish off the interior of Car 107 from Montreal the other youths nave been re placing the piping Car a major job which requires working with the air brakes and David and Kathy were working under the grants last summer also and were responsible for the restoration of the exterior of Car and Ihe repfplng of it This year a fifth student Robert BeU helps out as a volunteer as he is too young to be eligible for the grant It taken all summer for and Elisabeth to accomplish as much as Ihey have Inside Car 107 Hundreds of hours of elbow grease have gone Into it and It is only about half done The projects and the girls savior came accidentally Kathy explains They have been using a very powerful ana sticky chemical to strip the old varnish off the woodwork in an at tempt to bring It up to its original tain However the golden colored and wording explaining the type car it is were above the doors at both ends They didnl want to strip off the wording Masking tape was carefully placed over the numbers and the area around It covered In the chemical However says some of it the chemical seeped behind the tape It turned out the wording was not painted on but and was under all the coats of varnish After days of wondering how to work around the words and numbers they discovered It was safe to put the chemical right over it While the students are only paid for seven hours a day they act worked eight In an attempt to accomplish all they can Their week runs from Wednesday until Sunday Besides working on the actual cars the students are also kept busy doing grounds and car maintenance Kathy and Elisabeth also work In the gift shop on the weekends Ana says during the week although not face they them officially sometimes tours om surprises The visitors are taken for rides up and down the tracks and shown the railcar museum explains Some are only there a few minutes other have hours to browse around It slow hard work for all the students but says Elisabeth in their case quality is better than quantity And there is a certain feeling of accomplishment when they can look back at what they have done And when their grant runs out on August David Elisabeth and Kathy will continue working When the snow socks In the railway yard they will be taking various projects home with them to work on over the winter So far It has taken two years of work to get Car 107 to the stage it is at now At least one more summers work Is needed But that isnt bad It took 15 years to restore Car Students working on the County Radial Railway this were KoelmeL Robert Bell KaUiy Johns David Johns Paul and Chlchy Rockwood rural routes Drop Saturday delivery The Childrens House Halton
