GeorgetownActon Wednesday Oct 27 5 Our readers write J eader warns of threat of aggregate industry Dear Sir It appears thai north residents are to become a com of ac cording to a sketch that tome enter prising civil servant has bad pre pared order to enhance a monu mental money grab for aggregate developers These aggregate firms mostly SA so one can be very sure that the aggregate in dustry has no thoughts or worries about the people of this area or of anybody else in Ontario for that matter If this so called plan is endorsed by Queens Park and the Ontario Municipal Board show us an order council and let the chips fall where they may don give us a signature of the Honorable Allan Pope If Mr Pope handles the aggregate industry lobby In Ontario as he has handled the fish and game portfolio God help the residents of the Acton area with the passage of this en croachment Acton and could become one very large and lake stocked with no fish or Just Splake It seems strange that land on the southeast side of the Third Line and south of Highway has been passed by in the sketch shown in favor of lands further north possibly these lands are held by developers with a powerful lobby of their own No testing of property north of Highway 7 has ever been done to my knowledge in the years that I have lived here Ontario residents need no further problems or harassment In these times of no development and high taxes It is quite evident at this time that the people of Ontario had better not put their faith in any elected politician Just get up and fight for what right on their own Form a ratepayers association or go on strike whichever We do not have to take this lying down if we have a democratic society Assuring irate citizens that no expropriations would take place be cause of this so called land feeeze is Just letting the tail wag the dog If there are to be no expropria tions why have the freeze in the first pUce We hear very little input from elected administrators or from would be runnersup on this prob lem Could it be that regional are of the mighty and of The Lome Fletcher Area couneff race Decision meetin Candidates probe many issues Voting yes a beginning Dear Su it is encouraging to note the rising interest in the community with respect to the disarmament question and especially the quality of the letters to the editor supporting a YES vote One aspect of the argument that has not yet been touched upon is the connection between the arms race and world hunger Military hard ware sold by the rich developed countries to military Juntas EI Salvador is one example protects Western vested interests but is used oppress and posses the poor Such money spent on arms is a theft by the rich from those who lack proper food health care and the right for self determination This is violence of the most insidious kind It is becoming more and more apparent that we cannot leave it to the bureaucrats and militarists to reverse the arms race Most of them have a vested interest in the status and all profit in some way from armaments Industries The initiatives to restore sanity must come from the average Joe on the street We can make a beginning by noting YES for global nuclear disarmament Sincerely El don Comfort Thanks for Fall Fair coverage Dear Sfr The Directors of the Acton Agricultural Society would like to express our sincere thanks to all those who worked to cover the Acton Fall Fair and give us the coverage that we receive Our thanks who worked on the paper and to those who worked behind the scene and helped to make our fair the success that it was We hope that it will be possible to do the same in but with things changing as quick as they are today we will Just have to wait and see when the time comes Once again thanks to all Yours Truly Howe SecretaryTreasurer Acton Agricultural Society Neighborhood watch works Dear Sir Thanks for again providing me with an Interesting segment for one tit the weekend Report From the Country intervals faithfully Arthur Carr CKCOTVs Country Editor Keep Outside factions out Dear Sir RE Acton Town Hall I live in Alberta far away from Acton and all the controversy concerning the Acton Town Hall Yet 1 still feel as if I have a right to comment on it as Acton la and always will be my home All that I was about to say has already been said and quite nicely by Lynn Hamlin and E Hamlin of Ottawa Ontario in the September issue I agree com If only the outside factions would stay Acton would be fine Please put me down as Town Hall Supporter an Acton Sincerely Diane Cox Airdrlc Alberta Waring Kelly gardening The five candidates for the two area council seals Rick Bonnette Bruce Cargill Dennis Devine Ross Knechlel and Esther Taylor raised a number of issues at last week s all- candidates meeting including policing the recreation department municipal spending and quarries around Acton Two people will be elected Rick Bonnette fuck Bonnette believes Acton needs mare policemen work here each shift and that an officer should be in the station 24 hours a day The police are do ing a good job there just aren enough of them he declared add ing Acton has a severe vandalism problem The promises of today arc tomorrows taxes and with the economy in such sad shape Bon feels all the iclpality can afford is essential services He says he will be positive and sympathetic to Ind ustry pointing to Ihelr not Just as em ployers but also their community contribu tions says the Acton works yard Is being wasted for stor age when snow plows drive to Georgetown to punch in and so snow plowing will be done here sooner He says bringing trucks up to Acton from Georgetown is not Just a waste of time but also wastes expensive fuel If waste spending was eliminated from the recreation department- Ac tort wouldnt be in he position of still having just one ball diamond with lights 17 years after the lights were installed Bonnette t feel tax dollars should be spent lo restore the town hall but he does support giving Ihe building lo Ihe restoration groups to see if they can save it He noted volunteers built the Band Hall and Scout Hall successfully He said giving Georgetown councillors what for wasnt the way for Acton councillors to go He noted Acton and Georgetown are pol itlcal bed partners so they have to make Hal ton Hills work and scratch each others back Bruce Cargill Vandalism of private property as well as pub lic property like the cemetery has become a serious concern here according to Bruce Cargill a problem Existing deterrents arc not sufficient so Acton needs more police and more police foot patrols says the town deserves a day police protection Recreation is a show case for community skills and talents as w ell as great entertainment Cargill said but municipal recreation department has been mismanaged and so have facilities Cargill called for the elimination of the user pay philosophy He believes the registration for sports in Acton will double if user pay is dropped By strictly scrutinizing the rec reation department budget user pay fees can be dropped because less money will be wasted He like to see better facility main tenance noting better maintenance would include things like turn ing the tennis court lights off when nobody is playing tennis Cargill also feels the recreation department must be monitored closely to make sure all staff is being fully iied During the question and answer period said he was pleased to hear Mayor Peter say the municipality is looking at gates for Cemetery He said better cemetery security to curb the vandalism problem was an Issue he will raise at council if he elected He warned gates wont be the absolute solution and the Town is going to have to spend money for other security urea Cargill noted for years we heard Acton couldnt grow but now Acton can grow to people and with land which can be developed all around town once there is more housing there will be more stores Dennis Devine Council cant stop proper v taxes going up but the rate of in crease can be slowed according to Dennis A local businessman who is currently living in Georgetown but will be moving lo Acton next month Devine said protection must beefed up and a good way lo start would be more foot patrols and more police efforts in Ihe area at crime prevention The threat of quarries surrounding Acton con cerns Devine who says he is worried about pro perty rights and the lack of compensation for rural residents as well as Lack of growth In Acton is another intnffwnVArlffial time to plan Actons future Council must show fiscal restraint and get better value and vices for its money Budgets must be dev eloped from a business view pledged find out where tax dollars are going He says It is time for some new blood and new ideas on council He said he is used to hard work and he has the lime to devote to council business Council needs people who are willing to put their neck on the line and Acton needs a strong voice on council Local business cant survive unless there are more people here so the only way to build bus iness is to increase Ihe number of homes and the population he said Ross There is no such thing as a perfect councillor a councillor cant be everything to everyone according to Boss The Hills budget is a human document and covers every tittle expenditure A councillor must wade through the huge budget and review It line line When he s at council Knechtel said he thinks like a taxpayer and has become an expert on budgets To review the budget properly requires a lot of lime and energy Another important municipal document a councillor must under stand he said Is the new Official Plan A councillor must be able to understand future development options and he noted he knows ihe score Councillors only make and no exp enses or pension which unduly expensive Knechlel noted he has the time energy and expertise for the Job of councillor He told the audience he wont make promises he cant keep and will tell them the price tag for promises he does make Policing t a lUlton Hills concern and cou ncil has no influence in the matter stated so it was point less for local council candidates to raise the issue By purchasing property for off street parking council and the Business Improvement Area will be taking an Important step towards re vital of downtown Extra off street parking is for the long range future downtowns current problems exist everywhere and wont disappear until the economy improves Acton streets dont wail any longer for snow plowing than Georgetown streets Knechtel said He said it wouldn t be economical to keep the trucks at the Aclon works yard be cause such a variety of equipment is needed Streets might be plowed a little quicker but the job would cost more concluded Esther Taylor Esther Taylor was bitten by the political bug a long time ago and the virus has flared up again She told the ience this election is the last fling for the old girl She said she cant promise she will be an expert on finances like Ross Knechtel who she predicted will top the Ells but she has ice from sitting on council for two years in the when councillors really lived danger because they were putting In sewer lines and building streets at the same time Taylor said she acquired some hard experience dur ing her previous terms on council Taylor said she will a plain speaking councillor and deal with the issues as they arise She said shed like to see costs cut but can t promise it will be possible since Halton Hills only gets a little over 30 cents of each tax dollar while M cents goes to the school board and nearly cents to the region Thirty cents out of each dollar isnt a lot to run all the mun iclpal services like lib raries street repairs and recreation People can talk loose ly about spending cuts but it will be very liard Taylor noted she recreation minded like some of the candidates but she does realize there Is a danger the recreation officials could become empire builders VOTE YOUR TOWN YOUR CHOICE AREA COUNCILLOR WARD 3 GEORGETOWN HALTON HILLS Finn POULSTRUP Canada Grade A Beef 140 MI St Ontario Phcosertectrw October reserve ma
