GeorgetownActon Wednesday Nov 24 Wagner suspension controversy rages on S comment Facts are facts there were no fabrications in article Free Press Sports Reporter I am writing this article in response to the let written by Steve president or Ihe Acton Minor Hockey Association Mr feels my knowledge of the suspension is obviously vague and the term goon town was m own fabrication To start I d like to say that my knowledge of hockey and the rules of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association arc up to dute since I vc played hockey in Acton for 20 years coached and been a director on the AMHA for the previous four years The example used by Steve was fine if it had happened on the ice and there had of been a game report handed Into the OMHA First it was not a game situs I ion he did not receive a match penalty and there was no re feree report handed in on this situation If il had happened on the ice Wagner or any other player would have received two to four games at the most from the not two months The term goon town was no fabrication it was a quote from Steve In a tele phone Interview I am not In the habit of w riling fabncatlon just facts I still feel the suspension was too stiff and since the changed their stand on the suspension and lowered it to one momth and have allowed Wagner to practicing at once have to assume they too felt the was too severe Just to let you know I do know the rules and if you re going book an suspended player is not allowed lo practice with his team until Ihe suspension Is over Steve is practising Father unhappy with appeal This letter to the OMHA was filed with the Free Press for publication Dear Sir I would like to appeal the ruling handed down by the Acton Minor Hockey Association Execu Live concerning the suspension of Steven Wagner We appealed their ruling and the Hearing took place in Acton Tuesday November 1982 at 30 m At this hearing Ihe Executive was represented by Steve Robert Smith and Herb Dodds Mr Dodds was highly audible in his and views concerning the suspension However I understand that Mr is not an elected member of the Executive Originally Steven was suspended until January The suspension was shortened lo December 1982 with Steven being allowed to practise with his team the present time It was voiced at the hearing that the December dale was more acceptable because Acton will be finished playing Gall by date Gait be ing the team which was Involved in the lion Thisrullngseemstomctobeunjust The Ex ecu live in effect is saying that if Acton was through playing Gait for the season then the suspension would have been lifted The Ex has found Steven guilty to a degree he has paid the price by being suspended for a time but because of the dales of the schedule he has to sit out more games because of a possl bllity of another confrontation Gall Thais being punished for what may happen in the future Trusting to hear from you 1 remain Sincerely yours Andrew T Wagner Appreciate article father Dear Dan I am writing this letter in appreciation to your article concerning Steven Wagners suspension by Acton Minor Hockey The story was unbiased and highly factual It was a truthful accounting of he situation to dale I admire your integrity to write the story as it happened Thanking you I remain ours truly AndrcwT Wagner Tired of parents crap Dear Sir I am writing this letter to the Acton Press because I cannot tolerate the crap that goes on in the Acton Minor Hockey System As the wife of a coach the mother or two hockey players who also referee Ihe socalled game of hockey 1 would like he parents or all hockey players to read this letter A coach gives up many hours of his time which ends up costing him money of his pocket to Iry and teach or girls the wonderful game of hockey This supposedly includes skating hockey skills and sportsman ship A hockey player is supposed to have re for his coach and team staff try his hard est and for the rep plnyers represent the town of Acton A referee is a person who has passed examinations set down by the system and is given a crest rule book and a card He is sup posed to keep the game clean and legal and use his judgement to the best of his or her ability What qualifies a parent Does he or she have a rule book Does he or she have respect for the team staff Does he or she help develop hockey skills Does he or she help develop sportsman ship Asa lifelong resident of Acton and being pro ud of it I am disgusted by the attitudes of some of the Acton parents In reply to An Irate Parent who says Ihe eoach and Acton Minor Hockey Association should back players for fighting this statement just boggles my mind Do these parents realize if this Wagner in cident had happened on the main street of Ac on it would be a criminal offence But be cause It happened in an arena this is supposed to make it all right People ed If parents want something to complain about perhaps Ihey should enquire as to how many match penalties what Is a match penalty parents have been called since the beginning of hockey season This shows the referees are trying to do their part to clean up the game of hockey but the hockey players are not co operating In reply to the statement of the coaches and learn players working together I agree If Ihe parents would also work together Instead of constantly complaining about one thing or another Ihe hockey players attitudes might have a chance I realize this letter will do absolutely no good lo change any parents attitudes because 10 years ago this was going on and probably 10 years from now it will still be continuing Can any Acton Hockey Player ever have a chance to survive this system and reach NHL By the time an Acton player reaches Midget or Juvenile age the parents arc frustrated the players are frustrated and inevitably the coaches from the past 10 years of that player s career arc to blame I mean somebody lias to lake the blame II certainly wasnt the parents right Come on parents gel off the soapbox get out the rule book your skates or hockey skills development book we have a Horary Do something constructive You have just about worn out another years coaches are you ready to move into their spots by teaching your players the skills they need Just ask any person from a past or present executive or coaching position what a wonder ful lot parents really are 1 sure they II tell I realize not all parents condone un sportsmanlike conduct but it is a lwas the squeaky wheel that gets the grease And so on and so on and so on God Bless our wonderful game of hockey Respectfully submitted by Mrs Ann Norton Mill Sireet East Reader not taking sides in suspension dispute Dear Sir Subject Wagoer Incident I have read the articles and letters over the past weeks published in the Free Press and heard second third and fourth hand stories etc I am happy that I dicta have to make the decision as a result of what happened There seems to be a lot of finger pointing as to what should have or should not have been done One thing that seems to be missing in all of Ihif Is the fact that as you go through life and you break the rules you pay the price Whether it is hockey in everyday life or ever Someone then has to make a decision as to what punishment la handed out Whatever the decision it will be an unpopular one but ft must be nude I not taking either side in this dispute because I don Know the facts Perhaps this will be a learning process by both partita Let look at the outcome as positive move and strive to make hockey better in Acton Rick Smith
