explained legal matters would still be ad in all local papers but suggested specific matters pertaining only to one area of the Town may be placed in one paper only His report urged all Town advertising to Ik placed in one spot in the newspaper even il this meant having a keeper tisement when there was no ad needed He iald this could be negotiated Councillor Miller said according to the figures could be saved by only in one paper Councillor Dave Whiting maintained the large area of Hoi ton Hills presents an unique situation making advertising in more than one paper necessary Councillor Ross saw a distinct advantage to the Town in having more than one newspaper saying they have different He pointed out a keeper ad would reduce any saving He moved the matter be deferred for two week and council agreed Clergy Comment More needed for the Snwt Scout hall needs more insulation The Acton Scout Hall is cold and it is going to get a tot colder if isnt raised as soon as possible That is the figure estimated to bring the buildings insulation up to standards according to Murray Harrison Last year he revealed it took to heat the front half of the building In December a relatively warm month it took to heat he front part and only for the back half Harrison said the discrepancy got him wondering about the insulation and the past few Saturdays hes been crawling around in the attic and the base ment to see where the problem is He said he was told the older half was Insulated years ago but when he Investigated he discovered only one inch thick had been used and these were ripped and torn or had been chewed up by the rels leaving very little or no insulation Harrison pointed out the Rot ary which sponsors the Scout Hall is not in the position to add that extra insulation and he is putting out an appeal to anyone whohas ever been in the scouting movement or anyone just Interested to donate to a good cause The building is currently being used by two beaver colonies two cub packs one scout and one venture group as well as two brownie packs and two girl guide groups Two other private groups rent the hall and It is available for a nominal fee to anyone else when the scouts or guides are not using it Harrison said it is expected volunteers will install the in sulation but the supplies are still needed The front part of the building is heated with oil while the back the new part is heated by electricity Anyone interested In helping out either financially or man ually can contact Harrison at Legion happenings by Harry Norton The Zone Crib be tourna sure that everything planned for February is ready on time If you have any business you want the executive to consider make sure you have It in the hands of one of the executive members prior to meeting time at by Andy King One of the Interesting items that featured in the fourth annual TV Guide reviews the year in television was a spot on how the American family has been portrayed over the years on the magic tube We went back to televisions earliest beginnings viewing scenes from shows such as Leave It To Beaver the Cleaver family then moving up through Bonanza and Julia to the modern day family shows such as Dallas Dynasty and Falcon Crest What we saw was a transition from depicting the typical family as all the time sentimentality to the current knifein theback blood thirsty passing themselves off as loving brothers and sisters In families such as Dallass Ewing clan In other words in the 1950s tele vision gave us too much senti mental slop in the 1960s we get too much hate and hostility One of the commentators noted that trying to find a happy family on television today was like trying to find an empty cab in rush hour in Manhattan possible but not very likely But it raises the question of the old pro blem which happened first or which caused the other did television merely reflect societys own changing family patterns or has television In fluenced through lis change in programming the type of family breakdowns so current today I tend to think that the breakup of family values and family life was coming before television burst onto the cul tural scene that televisions depiction of family life as happy funny eternally loving and forgiving despite mistakes and goofs was an attempt by the medium to reverse a situation that was already building momentum by then the pres sures of Indus allied ur banised North American society were wreaking havoc on the traditional family unit I dont think television causes family breakup any more than television causes wars But television does have a bearing on oar values and our world- view and it Is erosion In certain values that may indirectly contribute to conflict and alienation among individuals as weD as among nations My chief bone of contention with television at the moment has to do with a single com First Choice Its recent signing of a multimillion dollar contract with Playboy to pro duce and show softcore pom on PayTV is a cynical statement of belief that the consumer Is a mindless easily manipulated lowlife creature that rarely rlsesabovethestateoflust Im against pornography anyway it is exploitive and dehumanizing But what strikes me most about the PayTV thing Is that it is Just one more example of how televisions view of the consumer you and me is a very low view Television is once again in sulting our Intelligence and our moral values Once again we are being told that we are creatures of appetite and ap petite only This Is not anew message by a long time a commercial for fast food or fast cars or flashy clothes comes on the air we are being told the same thing Televisions view or us Is that we are helplessly manipulated by desires for nothing more substantial In life than brighter colors stronger taste or greater speed The key word is more We are told to want more We are told to wont more of the things that count less more or the good life more beer bright lights and flash and less of things like love faithfulness and commitment The only time we need to worry is the lime that we start to belive that what television says about us is true If we accept televisions cynical view of us we are in a lot of trouble Television thinks that we are made in its own Image But we arent made in tele visions image at all Were made in Gods image Let a remember thatand by living up to that through Christs help we can save the family and society from the Dallas disaster GOOD REASONS to your good neighbor agent CAR HOME LIFE BOAT Robert iriSUKAnCE AGENCY LTD 174GUELP1IST Bo Burlington Ontario by Diane Hart A regional councillor stood up In Wed nesdays meeting urging the two George town businessmen involved in the van Hart painting prank to come forward and identify themselves Im appealing publicly to the people involved to come forward Burlington Councillor Joan Little said to council I understand they are real gentlemen but this leaves a bad taste in the mouths of region But Mayor immediately stood up and asked that the item be discussed in camera on the basis of there being more information At the regional inaugural in December a painting was missing from the region after the Inaugural It was later revealed that two prominent Georgetown business men were involved in a prank in which hey apparently convinced an Immigrant cleaning lady to lake the painting home The police did not lay any charges and did not name the two men Theres a possibility the men may be named next week said the mayor after the confidential itm was discussed When theres been a mishap and peoples names are involved then the region could be in trouble if they were named without their consent Theres one more step to take Later councillor Little maintained she was not alone In her desire to have the two men come forward and identify themselves Id say its pretty well split she said adding councils concern is that no charges have been laid by the police on the matter It looks as if were sweeping things under Wages frozen Regional councillors are staying with what was termed a preelection fever dec concerning their wages for the rest of the year It was decided at Wednesdays committee meeting They agreed to keep their wages frozen until the end of the year when they will decide at that time whether to vote themselves a raise or not If theres one thing that makes a politi cian cringe this is It commented Milton Mayor Gord KranU telling members of the Administration and Finance Committee it is always politically unpopular to vote for a raise Its easy to say you dont need a raise but were not doing anyone any favors he added Burlington councillor Jim Grieve ad mitted that while the freeze of wages is a great political manoeuvre councillors know what tbey are worth Cowboy hat is stolen Guelpfa are investigating the theft of Jo Camera and hat from atmkpnottttotoUwRowoodHotd on Saturday night at iti a CHIC own rtfirrnci ft toe it trail an urrfr5 Pomeroy did not present any new information but he did elaborate on the degree of involvement of the men One of the businessmen looks like he dragged the other into it and was playing a Joke on him she explained that the difficulty of one person being more In volved than the other Is another reason the region did not want them named little admitted it did look as if the region was protecting the men because of Iheir positions but she maintained there was more to It It sounds as if were just dealing with not what had happened but what these men are she said adding if big per petrator came forward many councillors would be relieved 6 5 doesnt add at Region Region councillors were given a chance to look at the preliminary budget Wed nesday afternoon which if accepted as is could mean an per cent Increase In taxes across the region for Hallon homeowners This means about per homeowner But from now until April the budget will be reviewed and the figures may vary Heltons Chief Administrative Officer Dennis warned councillors that there are problems in the budget Halton Regional Police have Indicated that they would like a further in crease of their base budget of million up from B million in also said that Social Services requests are up per cent but the budget only provides a six per cent increase He said in dollar figures that the social services request exceeds the amount provided by The amount provided in the budget for social grants is This will certainly be a problem said Perlln The Childrens Aid Society has also said will need a further Increase He mentioned that the CAS Is funded per cent by the province They could not keep to the base especially day care said Joe regional treasurer said that his concern is with the apportionment guarantee grant His staff has projected a 90 per cent decrease In the appointment grant being given to Halton HlHs the only mimic which still has the apportionment grant Last year we were banded but this year It looks
