substantially in schools superintendent of Services told the board Thursday evening that the present policy of staffing for cler ical workers has not been changed since 1909 even though the workload has changed dramatically In a report to trustees Stoness noted that of elementary schools do not have full time secretaries Offices are staffed any where from two and a half days a week to four and a half days Under the Stoness proposal hours of secretarial clerical help would be alloc to those schools which at the present time do not qualify for full time office staff Instead of working seven hours a day how ever he noted staff would work six hours making sure the office was covered while the children were in school Besides the concern of increased work load the report stated there was also con for student care and safety office sec communication and public relations reception and ineffective use of principal time in cases where the principal has to answer telephones or work in reception The present formula for staffing of offices is two and a half clerical days for schools from SI to ISO students three days for 151 to students four days with schools to students etc up to days per week with 1051 to USD enrolment The Stoness proposal would change this to clerical hours a week for to 150 enrol ment if twinned hours for 151 to students and to 375 students up to hours for schools with to 950 students A pool of casual assistance days will be administered by the Superintendent of Employee Services to meet emergency needs Including the development of the Emergency Telephone Network and clerical assistance will be provided in August to all schools commensurate with enrolment program and the report noted Trustees will discuss the report and the proposal further at another meeting The shortage of full time secretaries and office clerical staff has been a major con cern of parents in this area for some time as revealed at recent Councillors DropIn in Acton
