Georgetown Acton Wednesday Aug 1963 Round Robin Spent scene tune at Erin Heights Golf Qua last week talking about the course sad Chili North which took place in this past weekend 1 been to the northern course in a couple of years and was surprised on my first visit in some time The layout baa been changed slightly the traps are large and sand and the greens a lush full color Last Monday I was at the Peter Norton Golf Tourney Thursday 1 was back again for a wet press conference discussing The First Ever Fifth Annual Carling Canadian Championship Chili with organizer Bob Murie and the course renovations with general manager Jun Holmes The Chili sounded Murie expected some people in Milton last weekend and some teams cooking up chill in the old fashioned country way It becoming a big thing and teams were expected from Texas and New York to compete in the event Things got under way around 10 on Saturday morning While he chili cookers showed some of their wizardry guests enjoyed Beer Can Flattening Contests Pie Eating events and lots of games and rides for kids The event isnt Just a local thing or hoax Some people take the cookoff seriously and why not First prize in the Canadian Championship is the right to compete in the Championships in Texas in November and S Air will fly them there The only thing I t understand about the talk with Bob was why he entering He supplied the small group of us thai attended with lunch What else but chill And damn good I might add I m not a chili lover but this stuff was good enough to win the Canadian championships in my book It would look a little funny though if entered He one of the judges Now thai s a Job I wouldn envy Andneltherdoesheattimes of one competition he Judged Seems the chill not only looked like dog food it like it loo The Lone Star that what they call him look the easy way out giving the lowest marks in the com petition and passing on the tasting Judging is done on several things and this particular batch failed miserably on color it was grey instead of red and aroma After talking with Bob and a few other medio people who took the to visit Erin I briefly with Jim Holmes the CM of the club Jim and his family took over the course last spring purchasing it from Colossus Developments and have worked hard to change things The Holmes are no strangers to the golf business running a operate for the oast 13 years Since taking over the Derrydale group have renovated the club house and done much work on the course itself The greens were a major according to Holmes and they ore In super shape right now The addition of several traps have also enhanced the layout making It a tougher course to play They have added rough along the fairways and making the course complete Now there is once again talk of turning Erin Into an IB hole operation and Holmes stated that it is a long range plan of the new owners When financing is available The back nine has already been laid out and Jim feels that the other half of the course should be ready in about five years The course GM Is finding that working closely with has several ad vantages to the new add tion to the family Machinery for major projects can be transported from one course to the other relative ease and they con use the experience of building Derrydale in the redevelopment of Erin Heights They have imported Ron Burgess of to act as and Jim feels that an important reason that Erin is in such good shape Ron started working at Derrydale when he was 13 Now is he knows what it takes to keep a course in top shape Another key figure in the project is Bob Ihe pro at and now Erin After six years at Glen Abbey and ten Canadian Open appearances he Is now employed by and spends a couple of days a week at the Erin lay out Membership at the club has increased drastically since the takeover with some ISO members to date compared to only 20 two years ago Right now memberships are being sold at half price Regular fees are for a senior male for a senior female and for a junior Dally tickets are for IB on a weekday and for nine Prices rise to and on weekends According to Holmes weekend tour neys will keep the place busy through lW but small weekday events are more than welcome In the winter Erin Heights will be used as a cross country sU area by the Holmes family The club house and bar facilities have been renovated to include winter use and they will be issuing daily tickets and memberships for cross country nut Im really excited and pleased with the acquisition says Jim who spends his time between the two clubs His sister Honey Baldwin la the acting Girts soccer Despite Thursday a drizzle a couple of decided to try out the facility that Jim Holmes had raved about He had good reason too While things were a bit damp tbe course was still in fine shape His Urge traps came In to play on three boles at least my thou landed In them and greens were true and the fairways full and short Its been a since I had played Eras Heights but in be back there In the near future trying toy luck again Goad tack aba to the Helmet ftmHy may venture tarn out a well as Stingers undefeated The Acton Stingers remain the only undefeated
