decided to main tain the Acton bill paying service is inaccurate to say the least By changing their minds about alt bills being paid in Georgetown or cheques be ing dropped off in Acton with no receipts they are showing their local cust omers that they do have a say in their local utility and they are more than merely numbers to the commis sion While the people of Acton can appreciate business decisions must be made they in turn also want to be appreciated as valued cust omers The proposal to move all billing operations to Georgetown was in essense saying Hey Joe Blow in Acton give us your money but who the heck cares about you Stupid Ab Tennant No sir Three commissioners showed they are intelligent enough to listen to reason and willing to compromise They are also fair enough people to change their minds and residents dont want what they dont deserve All they ask for is what is dueHJM Letters Band not pushed aside Dear Thoroughly Ticked Off It was with great Interest that I read your letter In the Free Press last week September 1983 1 am glad that a democracy such as our gives everyone a forum to vent their anger regarding ihe world around them However your erroneous view of the Fall Fair parade must certainly be clarified If you take the time to contact the Directors of the Acton Band he will confirm a telephone conversation that I had with him regarding the position of the band In the parade It was our intent to have the Acton Citizens Band aa the first band in the parade A request Department- regarding their placement at the beginning of the parade baaed on safety grounds was honored a very logical reason was conveyed In their request The confusion that builds on Hill St as we construct a km parade must be experienced to be apprec iated No one was pushed aa you put It Apparently the Citizens Band did not wish be behind the antique cars where they had been placed on the original plan The Hamilton band you refer to was part of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 197 contingent which believe also plays a significant role in the Acton community and the antique cars were not an issue to them In order to reopen a blocked off street some last minute decisions had to be made by the parade marshals the parade moved down Mill St Within this context the Legion contingent ended up as the first band in the parade Their participation was greatly appreciated If you wish to address these residents aa strangers perhaps you should change the direction of your com ments The Acton Agricultural Society is always looking for Interested parties to help present the best Fall Fair In Ontario It is a gigantic task for the members at the best of times but the volunteer work Is worth it as fall fair weekend un folds each year Your apparent expertise in and parade building would be welcomed next year on the parade committee Ignoring such talent would not be in the best Interest of the Fall Fair to telephone listing for your pseudonym In our directory it was impossible for me to clarify your concerns with you personally therefore I chose to use the medium that you had selected for my response This year a committee of six local people provided a top notch parade for our 70th Anniversary Fair Their fine efforts have been recognized by the vast majority of Ihe people that watched the parade and certainly I highly value assistance In this endeavour On behalf of the committee we welcome your participation as plans are developed for next years parade The next fair board meeting is on October 1983 at Knox Presbyterian Church at 830 Please wear a name tag Yours truly Robert Johnston Chairman Parade Committee Acton Agricultural Society Soviet act barbaric Dear Sir The barbaric shooting down of Ihe Korean passenger jet by a Soviet pilot was an inhuman and deplorable act It shows how little the Soviets trust the west Just as we cannot trust them But what if the Soviet pilot had pushed a nuclear trigger Could World War III have ensued Do we dare now to trust that it couldnt happen Hit had most of the world would now be dead and the sur vivors would now be emerging from shelters to face a dying wasteland and their own deaths before winter is over from radiation disease hunger and grief Who then would be the winner Would it matter The Korean incident should impel us to work alt Ihe harder for global nuclear disarmament These is no reason and no need for either side to trust that the other will fulfil the terms of any such agreement neither has trusted the other for years But spy planes con apparently detect something as small as the han dkerchief in Andropovs pocket both sides are highly know ledgeable about each others ar senals any move to arm or disarm would be quite detectable Both sides are stalling at negotiations now both may continue to do so It is easy to throw up our hands and say disarmament Is impossible but that is to admit inevitable destruction If we want our children to live out their lives then we should all work in whatever small way we can to impress world leaders with our desire for reduction of nuclear weapons If our lives are in the hands of triggerhappy pilots lets give them fewer weapons to play with We passed the point of having enough nuclear weapons long ago Yours truly Janet Duval Hills Action for Nuclear Disarmament HAND Dont stop talking Dear Mr Your recent telegram to Prime Minister urges him to order an freeze on all ongoing negotiations and agreements with the Soviet Union In response to the attack on the Korean p Jet We sincer ely hope that you were not ad vocating a frees on any direct or to end the nuclear arms race Perhaps we can to atop talking on other happy on side from the nuclear trigger One of the Canadians returned from Moscow recenUy on the Christian Initiative for Peace said Its Imperative that there be contact without trying to paint the Soviets into a comer Nothing could be gained from totally Isolat ing the Soviet Union no matter how much we may deplore their actions While some would say that nuclear disarmament is an Im possible goal we believe that the fate of this planet depends on continuing open neg by all concerned nations to stop the arms race Yours truly Halloa Hills Action for Nuclear Disarmament Group HAND Three out of 4 races right Well I picked three out of four right After I returned from two weeks of spring training and following the League in Florida in March a little carried away at my typewriter raving about the game I also made some predictions for the coming major league As a I didnt do too badly The Dodgers Orioles and White Sox all came through and took their divisional crowns But I really blew it with the Expos In fact I botched my entire call of the East I called the Expos with a tough new manager and a wealth of talent to win the East the NL and the Series They turned out to be a bunch of chock artists whose bullpen cant hold a lead a team of of fensive stars who cant hit with men on base or in the clutch Im also afraid the arent really a team but a bunch of prima donas more concerned with outside business Interests and their personal stats Its time to totally rebuild the Montreal team and get a team The old coots from had more gas left In the tank than I thought and Pirates once again defied their on paper image and found some pitching to go with fine hitting The Cardinals didnt hit as well and as expected their pitching was poor Cubs and Mets performed about as well as an ticipated but I had their finishes reversed Perfect record for that division all wrong Only two clubs finish where I called them in the East Orioles did it fine style and Im sticking with them for the A L Pennant Yanks Jays Red Sox and Indians all finished exactly as I picked them I must confess I chose Jays for fourth on the basis of pitching which wasnt as good as I anticipated while their hitting which I said would be better was vastly better than I expected My second spot candidate Brewers wound up fifth where I thought the Tigers would be Tigers finished In Milwaukees place Tigers had better relief pitching than I called Injuries on the mound and in the field hurt Brewers more severely than I figured In the AL West Im please as punch the Sox did It the only other Pale Horse divisional title prediction I saw in the spring was in TV Guide Kansas City Oakland and Minnesota performed as I figured they would but Texas was a big surprise and I credit the manager Doug who was an unknown quantity back in March Angels were destroyed by age and Injuries Seattle stank worse than Imagined I get the order very right in this division a couple of clubs performed well enough to finish where I said but didnt because of surprise Im provements or collapses by others I encountered the same problem in picking the West My assessments of strengths and weaknesses were close to the mark but one surprise muddled things up Houston Again it was an unknown spring quantity the managers job who was the fly in the ointment LA and Braves were right where I said theyd be and for the reasons I said in March Houstons improvement moved Padres and Giants down a notch from where I saw them finishing but their performance ran true to course Reds were poor as I forecast Just for the record heres the actual finishes with my picks In brackets AL East l Baltimore 2 Detroit 3 New 4 Toronto Milwaukee Boston 6 7 Cleveland AL West 1 Chicago Kansas City 3 Texas 7 Oakland 4 California Minnesota Seattle 6 1 Philadelphia 1 Pittsburgh 3 Montreal 4 St Louis New York Chicago S NLWest 1 Los Angeles Atlanta 3 Houston Son Diego Son Francisco Cincinnati Nowfor the playoffs I give the Orioles the edge over the Sox on the basis of a little more post season experience in five games Both teams have fine mound staffs especially starting pit ching and strong offenses Over In the National Im taking the Dodgers four Better pitching and hitting and enough experience will carry to the series Phils may prove me wrong again theyve got ex perience galore and theyve been hot of late but somehow I think the miracle will end now As for the series Id like to reserve judgement on that a while longer Of the post season It was a dandy Four good races much of the way and great weather watch baseball for most of the season except the early spring Considering how close things were I was a little surprised the races go to the last weekend By the way at the allstar break my picks didnt look very good The only one I had right was Expos on top the one which proved the most wrong in the end But at the half way mark Orioles Sox and LA were all close by so I worried Also of the 1 teams I saw In March six finished where I said they would Not exactly the powers of observation Letters Thanks
