miles east of Toronto was at a garage sale for a com group last fall taking a picture when a gentleman came up and asked If he was Murray editor of the paper With trepidation anticipating a com plaint about why something was in the paper or published in a recent issue be answered yes This fella introduced himself as Doug Keilough of Acton noted he reads Gord a column and recalled him mentioning he was from Port Well Doug said be was originally from Cobourg Is another eight miles down the road to the east of Port They chatted a bit about their two for mer home towns and concluded they didnt know each other in those days though there Isnt that many years be tween them and Gord did spend some time a whole summer once when he was in the militia Anyway Doug called again lost week and asked if his grandfathers name was Hec cautiously replied yes wondering who the heck Doug Keilough was and why he wae calling him about a grand father who passed away when Cord was only about seven or eight Well Doug jogged Gords memory as to who he was and noted had re cently mentioned he and I would be en- Joying Christmas with his family this year and his step gran dm other Florence Giddy was coming from Port Hope Actually It was me who mentioned Christmas and Fu more about this name for Florence later Doug has big hello to pass on to Florence from his aunt Margaret who knows and was nursing supervisor at Port Hope Hospital when they both worked there Florence gets the Free Press weekly so I decided to pass he hello along through my column as a surprise Now for an explanation of Its who gave her this nickname one shes as well known by as Florence in Port Hope Im told by his mother Joan Seems as a toddler Gord couldnt say Florence all he could manage was It stuck As a nurse at Port Hope hospital was involved in both the delivery of and his brother Dave At Christmas his family told me a little story about Florences first remarks to Joan about her first bom moments after the big event Well she mused hes got big feet They still are a little large certainly compared with mine Guess his big feet led to bis big mouth get him back for relaying his first meeting with me a few months ago in his column That is if my editor lets this get This Friday Actons council dropin resumes at the Acton Social Services and Information Centre the bouse beside and Video after a short holiday season Actons three councillors Rick Bon nette Ross and Dave Whiting regularly attend and Mayor Russ Miller and Councillor Jake Kuikec are also often on hand Except for one Friday late last year attendance at dropin has been meager which councillors find puzzling Coun cillors particularly Whiting often comment that they wish people would contact them more often to express opinions and bring complaints and con to their attention With so many contentious Issues these days for ex ample the municipal complex and land purchase question property tax and assessment reform snow removal etc theres really no reason why the coun cillors should be left sitting at dropin chatting with each other Go on dont Just sit back and complain drop by drop- in and voice your concerns DropIn runs from 1 JO to 2 or later if needed At 42 Thursday night we got a call at home from a citizen wishing to make an observation about snow service The citizen turned out to be Councillor Whit ing who said with a light snow falling the roads were getting quite slick He noted Guclph St in Georgetown Highway 7 was particularly treacherous As he drove home to Acton he said he was expecting to find Mill St in Acton quite bad and was prepared to call the works department However he found Highway In town had been sanded and wasnt too bad Side streets like which is his own street were as bad as Highway 7 in Georgetown Whiting tells us hes heard a few com plaints from citizen who say snow banks are too high at different Intersections Hes passed them on to staff and theyre cutting down snow banks Councillor says hes ing numerous calls from citizens about the snow situation nine In one work day alone Besides hearing from liens over the phone and In person at his shop hes also receiving calls at home Inter spersed with the many calls for general complaints as well as calls for specific areas which need attention he says hes also had a couple of calls from people saying the snow service has been pretty good this year Where calls have been about specific areas of concern hes been passing them on to staff and remedial ac tion has been taken Hes received com pliments afterwards about the fine Job done by works staff In a few cases Hes been hearing concerns about snow burled fire hydrants Impassable sidewalks big snowbanks etc Qscdage Many visitors in area by Doris Fines Stelco
