itd BIA Chairman A strong downtown benefits whole town by BeUyanne The belief that a strong downtown is on important ty objective Is the reason local lawyer David Page has chosen to establish his practice in downtown Georgetown and to bead the downtown merchant association and their promotion for a threeyear term As chairman of the Board of Management of the Georgetown Central Business Improvement Area BIA since January Page has announced that popular Pioneer Days will again be held in June with features that should be enhanced by the pro vince s celebration and Georgetowns 120th anniversary Since moving here three years ago the young lawyer has shown his commitment to quality smalltown life by becoming active in the downtown community and the Rotary Club and something of a local historian along June will be a busy month says Page with activities every weekend including the Chamber of Commerce BIG Cele bration and Highland Games Since Pioneer Days has become an annual event in June In downtown Georgetown for some years we are still going ahead with our plans for the weekend of June 21 through June We have received many compliments on our downtown project says Page The program which Work Ing with the town council and financed through downtown business taxes me has redesigned the downtown core with attractive new light standards brick work trees and flower boxes and sidewalk benches While acknowledging hat there have been some problems Page says that on the whole the mer chants are happy with the end results and feel the downtown has been revitalized to the benefit of everyone Page agrees with local businessman Murray Henley who said a few years ago You cannot make a downtown It takes years to evolve and becomes the focus and heart of the town If it thrives the community thrives and if It dies then the rest of the community dies with it I like the downtown atmosphere says Page and I like Hal ton Hills Its a good place to raise a family I hope our work benefits the entire community In some small way Answering criticism about lack of parking downtown for shop pers and theatregoers to the John Elliott theatre the chairman says there is ample free parking besides the few dozen parking meters along the main thoroughfares I am not sure of the number of parking places but there is room for hundreds of cars on the streets and In our four free public parking lots which downtown merchants help to main tain Our lots are never filled Any parking spot is closer to the restaurants and theatre then you will get to some place like the 0 KeefeCentre In Toronto Born in Vancouver Page was educated in Montreal and Toronto Ho lives with his wife Jennifer a registered nurse and their three young daughters in an historic old borne on
