BUSINESS OFFICE Office Manner Jean Shew Accounting- Pat Tourism potenta The information that Ac ton and environs is only skimming the surface on ef forts to attract tourists to this area may be difficult to accept after seeing the crowds which flock to the olde Hide House However the advice comes from a Toronto tourism consultant who told people at a presentation from findings of the Hatton Tourism Com mittee that a tourists awareness of the Leather- town heritage could create a tourist influx North Halton is not tapp ing its tourist potential the consultant said noting that 75 per cent of the tourists who visit this area are only one hour away North Halton has antiques local color and the getaway kind of rural attraction that is important to the people of Toronto he maintains Most of us who have lived in this area for years per haps dont appreciate the attractions which exist here or within a few miles of us The Hide House has shown what can be ac complished with the right kind of advertising directed at the nearby markets The consultant points out most tourists come to this area with a single purpose in mind and we are missing out on those who may want to do more than just one thing Few have offered other attractions to entice the estimated people who visit the Hide House annually Tourism creates jobs and money earning an estimated 18 5 billion a year for Canada about a year for every man woman and child in Canada About 1 3 million Canadians earn their living by serving the needs of tourists and supplying them with services and goods they need When we view tourism in these terms we can recognize the enormous potential there is for growth in the industry and we are barely scratching the sur face The opportunities are there to develop a thriving tourist industry m Acton and area All thats needed is the initiative resourcefulness and the capital to expand on it In view of the inertia which has afflicted industrial ex pansion in Acton for the last decade tourism could well pick up the slack and in vigorate the lagging economy Reconsider posting When governments change its often also signals a dip into the pork barrel where preelection favors are granted We see evidence of this in the new government in Ottawa where the Tones faced with the last minute appointments by former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to posts which pay very well indeed and have considerable prestige to boot Needless to say there was much gritting of teeth because no doubt the new Government would have liked to reward many of their supporters with some of the plums As a result any appointments they could change without draw ing public ire were eradicated Prime example is that of Bryce Mackasey newly appointed am bassador to Portugal he found he Was without a job a few days after the new Government took power They also erased former Agriculture Minister Gene Whalen from a post in an food commis sion Mr Mackaseys appoint ment in view of the unfavorable publicity he has received over the last few years may indeed have been controversial but the Tones were plainly being mean when they ousted Mr Whalen from a post where he could have done much good The Government did allow Mr Whalen to remain as president of the world food council when they realized the extent of his in fluence and they should reconsider their decision to remove him from that posting in Rome Clergy comment The supreme sacrifice by Sharon Mac Dona Id Last time we stressed the Importance in demonstrating the way of Christ as the solution for The Lost Youth to overcome their desire to lead unproductive lives But how do we do this especially since Christ is no longer living on this earth Although Chnst has gone to be with the Father we can get Christ into our lives What better way to demonstrate the way of Chnst than to be one in Christ What is even more exciting is this concept is not so ridiculous Through the repentance of sins and commitment to Christ we become new creatures and are referred to be in Chnst See 2 Corinthians Corinthians 12 Once we are renewed spiritually or bom again the Bible teaches wo are to seek the things of God and be rid of what belongs to our earthly nature such as greed and sexual While doing this we are to put on the new man for we are now a new creation with God s stamp This means clothing ourselves with compassion kindness humility gentleness pa forgiveness and above all love 3 MO In whatever we do we arc to be representatives of Christ It sounds like a tough act to follow doesnt if It also may seem a bit confusing for what does being a Christian have to do with any of if After all there are many philanthropists of this world who portray the characteristics of a good Christian and their efforts have met little success The Bible this question in Paul is wondering why the Christians in Colone are still following the worlds Idea of being saved through obeying various rules and doing good works The Living translation says These rules may teem good for rules of this kind require strong devotion and are and hard on the body but they have no feet when it comes to conquering a persons evil thoughts and desires They only make him proud So what do we do Simply this While we focus our eyes on things above we ask Christ to help us live as we should Romans Jesus said Foe men can only reproduce human We but the Holy Spirit gives new life from heaven John 3 Translation This is what kids need Letters Journey Into Yesterday opened minds to 200 years of history Dear Sir To You he communities and Report from Queens Park Recently released government statistics show that Ontarios working women are being under paid by to a year because the province has fail ed to Institute legislation to ensure equal pay for work of equal value A report prepared for the Ministry of Labour by economist Morley Gunderson said the final bill might even go as high as billion He maintained that the pre sent law wor ries about the complexities of introducing such a law at this time report said there is great debate about bow much an equal value law would cost However he estimated that based on to one million working women and likely adjustments of to per person the total cost of a fairly broad application of the equal value principle to On tario could be billion to billion He said that whether the use of heroin This parliamentary resolution calling for the federal government to amend the Nar cotics Control Act to give terminal ly ill patients access to heroin was moved by Vince Kerrio Liberal MPP for Niagara Falls and seconded by Liberal House Leader Robert Nixon In presenting the motion Mr Kerrio quoted extensively from the work of Dr Kenneth Walker a newspaper columnist who has crusaded to persuade the federal government to allow the use of the narcotic The potential for misuse of the drug or illegal distribution of the drug should never be allowed to overcome the potential benefits of dying patients and their families said Mr Kerrio Although heroin has been banned In Canada since 1954 be stated It is now legal for medical use in 38 countries including the United Kingdom It Is widely viewed si a more successful painkiller than morphine which Is legal In Canada and Walker contends that any additional problems legalization poses can be controll ed HospitalBed crisis After the
