Georgetown Herald A Division of Home Newspapers Company limited 22 Main Street South Georgetown Ontario WALTER C BIEHN Publisher THURSDAY MAY 13th EDITORIAL COMMENT May Go Down in History fight to retain the public school in the village has become more than an issue involving one small group of people and one large school board Those who would retain the school are ahead of board trustees in realizing that bigness does not necessarily mean better There are advantages of course in larger schools But do any of these compensate for youngsters being bussed far from home for the day deprived of privilege of a mother close by if sickness or in jury occurs of coming home for noon lunch of for school at a quarter to nine rtd arriving home shortly after school is dismissed for the day Shame That members of the federal gov ernment could even discuss such a sub stantial boost as seems to be in the cards Is blot on every elected politician At a time when unemployment Is high when government has suggested percent as a guideline for industrial pay increases when inflation is making if tough for an average to main tain his standard of living those who the economy are blithely talking about a handout from taxpay ers already bled while by taxes Can Prime Minister Trudeau really Does the impersonal attitude which must prevail In a large school replace the close relationship which teachers ir schools like can have with pupils and with the parents And is not the closing of schools whether depriving an entire community like Norval or on area of a larger community like Georgelown helping cause some of todays youth ful unrest Instead of closing school we suggest that the school board should be discussing enlarging it And at the same time they should be planning t return in Georgetown the grade schools of old The senior school sys tem has been a costly experi ment expect us to swallow the reasoning that because members of parliament have had no increase since 1963 such a raise would really only be six percent 8 times 6 equals And even so Is it proper for men elected only two years ago in a hard- fought election to decide they are so much more If parliament Is serious In consid ering that those we elect should have higher remuneration then bring in leg islation to increase pay after the next election Any other action is a betrayal of public trust Thinking of the Future Continuation of a tree planting pro gram Georgetowns newer areas will pay untold dividends in future for resi dents not yet born Living as we do in an older part of town we bless those pioneers whose foresight gave us these beautiful shade trees Trees like people dont last for ever and gradually those plantings erf long ago are disappearing some to blight some to age some to progress when a street is widened or improved Along with plantings in the newer areas we hope council will keep in mind a replacement policy when trees are removed Perhaps it wont be pos sible again have those stately maples Nor is there any use planting elms for beetles to feed upon With todays sew er and water lines trees with shallower roots ore more in keeping But trees should be a must to keep Georgetown attractive to provide shade on hot summer days colour in our tumn landscape THE DISTRICT AT A GLANCE MAYBE IF I BORROW YOUR WIG I CAN GET BY Dont Sneeze at Rights of Spring Its only when Canada It one of the few Inalienable rights we have left Oh there ore other rights of spring in this country but they are becoming polluted like everything else Theres the right to go trout fishing on Opening Day This was once an indefinable and in explicable delight Nowadays Its about as thrilling as climb ing onto a subway train at rush hoar Theres the right to go out and shovel and sweep back onto tho road all the sand the snow- blower has thrown up on your lawn during the winter This has a tendency to pall after the first five or six years Theres the right to cheat on Income tax This used to be day rigtrre as we used to say but so many people are do- tog it now that Its say now There ore all sorts of other spring rights like giving birth to twin Iambs going far a swim as soon as the ice goes out or discovering that your kid has quit university a week before final exams re not all cat oat for these things Theyre sort potty The only spring right that has not been Interfered with by government big busin ess labour unions or the worn- lib Is the ordinary Canad ians spring right of dying from the fin I think its probably the tost spring right have In perp etuity And I think its fitting that we should Practically anybody can die of practically anything these days according to the experts And theyre probably right though I have yet to know an expert to be right about any thing today ore faced with a growing number of problems they were born into an un certain and changing world they have witnessed the greatest scientific advances made by man as well as the most retro grade acts of inhumanity they have come to mistrust the Judgement of their ciders they violently denounce tho tradi tions which have secured American finally they have become frustrated at their own and bored with the fruits of their fathers labours Heaped upon shoulders that strain from the weight of the worlds problems are those personal practical problems the individual a summer job parents cither too straight or disinterested education why do wo have to learn this stuff recreation what is there to do In this towncity a future even if I get a degree in Social Work where can 1 get a Job pollution stop the world I want to get off adulthood drugs like it really expands my mind ya know I mean when youre really strung out like theres no problems No generation in tho world has had a rougher time psycholog ically These latter problems are real We need only look at un employment figures to realize the problems such as that de fined as tho generation gap have been aggravated by rapid ly changing morals along with permissiveness wo get pram and Its associated problems doubly unwanted children and venereal disease a new epidemic The dilemma of for cing unwanted education on unwilling students to prepare them for Jobs that will not be available by the time they graduate Is not a puzzle which many people would attempt to salvo yet solve it someone must Into this problem of over- education and ploy men we find the question of what to do with all the extra manhours of spare time recreation Look around what is there to do Despite every suggestion that has been made thus far there have been no effective viable answers offered for even one of these problems Many people of great intellect have tried to answer these questions but they have alt failed main ly I think because of the simplicity of the answer The Solu tion to all of these problems Is bo found in area drugs Legalize them and each one of problems is salved ana we can obtain as a bonus the answers to a number of questions concerning drug use which under present circum stances we cannot discover harmful effects habituation genetic damage brain damage etc Ill go into this later but let me first explain how tho legis lation and acceptance of drugs will do the greatest good for with alcohol reap tremendous profits from the sale thereof At the same time this new industry will open up a tremcnlous number of new Job opportunities no doubt there will bo retail outlets which have strict opening and closing hours and wo will need attendants and managers far these some areas will have licensed smoking lounges and shooting pads etc THEFTS SOAR IN HIGH SCHOOLS OAKVILLE Personal property thefts in secondary schools have reached major proportions but ore not being re ported to police An Oakvillo police spokesman said this week one secondary school alone had about thefts In re cent months of personal property from students in the school but the authorities were not relaying the reports to police UNIFORM STORE HOURS WANTED BRAMPTON Merchants and officials given immediate unanimous approval to a resolution from the Ontario Chamber of Commerce colling for uniform retail store hours across province A miracle and a Godsend was how one promin ent Brampton merchant described the possibility after bear ing the resolution In Bramptons own storeclosing by laws were tossed out by council as being unenforceable CANDLE WORKS NEWEST INDUSTRY Rich Hill Candle Works one of Orangevillcs newest and smallest industries is operated by three 23-year- old men who started the business last year on Rich Hill Form Amaranth They now have outlets right across Southern On tario from Port Elgin to Kingston and hope to soon be pro ducing candles a day FIREWORKS GIVEN THE WORKS ERIN Fireworks were given the works at Erin Village coun cil meeting last week The sale and display of fireworks in cludes squibs fireballs or firecrackers within the limits of the village has been banned except for the three days prior to Victoria Day and the day Itself The sale of fireworks has also been prohibited to any person under IB years of age DOWNTOWN TOWER BID FAILS MILTON Hopes of seeing a tower of stores offices and rise on Miltons Main Street were dashed last week William Johnson of Dorel Investments Ltd developer of the project told Mayor Brian Best hes giving up and dis posing of tho Hes fed up fighting council over how much parking he has to provide ECHOES a A juvenile has been apprehended in connection with a fire which caused extensive damage to Wriggles- worth public school early Tuesday morning The arrest was made following investigations by Inspector Ray Simons of Ontario Marshals office Inspector Simons was called here by Fire Chief Bob who told the Herald ho became suspicious about the fires origin shortly after the brigade was on the scene The investigation started at noon that day and was complet ed by pm The blaze started in a nurses room and spread to a cloak room and then to a storage room BUSINESS DIRECTORY Income Tax Return BOOKKEEPING SERVICES KENNETH BURGESS of Associate Tax Consultants BARRAGERS CLEANERS Shirt 8772279 IS Slain St S Free friends Now this Is not the end of the benefit to the labour market Taking into consideration the number of people who die as a natural result of continued drug use legal or not added to thoso who will commit suicide tho job turnover should be quite rapid and this in turn as you con see will not only help the unemployment problem but cer tainly be on in controlling tho population explosion an added feature here of course will be the extra work for mor ticians florists etc Yet another opportunity presents itself heretofore unimaginable but with legalisation worth considering thoso drug users who had progressed to more powerful drugs could since there would be no stigma in be ing Identified participate In studies carried out by Can adian Medical Association to determine effects of con tinued or even cumulatively progressive drug use this would naturally lower the economic burden on those users who hod achieved a certain degree of dependency on Acid Smack or what you At the same time the reports for these studies would provide vital in tor motion for the hum anitarians and vicarious euphoria for the general nonusing public As for the problem in education my suggestion provides the truly beautiful answer which a number of our stu dents have already discovered Why over fourteen above average Intelligence have to sit and soak up all that boring material which makes up tho course of study Who cares what they did back thcnT Whos Shakespeare or for that matter Steinbeck or oven Its whats happening now man All these problems will be solved only thoso people who wont to learn will go to school the others can turn on and expand their mind until such times as they ask to bo plac ed in a Government sponsored Drug Sanitarium this new in stitution of course will be financed partially with the tax from tho of drugs certainly on added benefit which is now both impossible and apparently politically unpopular that by solving tho education problem we have solv ed the recreation problem because the use of drugs Is in its own way panacea for boredom To even consider such problems as the lack of Hon or tho generation gap becomes redundant under the cir cumstances suggested in my Proposition tho prob lem as such disappears since the users obviously do not wish to communicate physically or externally at any rate The more personal problems based on sexual relationships will also decrease since according to experts among users sex uality declines this would also therefore cut down two of tho serious problems mentioned earlier population control and social diseases As you can see the possible benefits spread out In creasing circles each small problem solved in turn solves se veral others Employing the same logic that Is suggested here Im sure the reader can many other benefits accru ing from adapting the Humble Proposition Most important of all notice that the answer is so simple by legalising and accepting the use of drugs we solve all the problems that pla gue our youth And isnt that what Utopia Is all about Evans Chiropractic Clinic HO Street By Appointment CARPET CLEANING CARPET CLINIC Professional Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning in
