Georgetown Herald A Dlvliton of Horns Newspapers Company limited 22 Main Street South Georgetown Ontario WALTER C Publisher THURSDAY MAY 20 EDITORIAL COMMENT Should Be Selfish With several business outlets from the downtown area in the past decade merchants should be concerned about the future of what was once getowns only shopping district With no of crying havoc the time Is long past for those whose business interests Ire In the downtown core to form an echve organization de to keeping Mam Street the pros area it has been and still Is We do not suggest that there should be the bitterness between shop ping districts which existed for a time when Georgetown was first open ed Those whose hvelhood depends on commerce must first have a com munity The more people shop In Georgetown the more each progres bus will do in trade And it can be a heallhy situation to have more than one shopping area Women par are comparison shoppers and in the old days they would look at articles in downtown stores then go farther afield to another town before making a final selection A choice of two or three areas tends to keep hi town and one or other local merchant benefits m the end It is good then for all merchants to get together on dewalk sale this year rather than each their own as happened in the past But this does not rule out selfish organizations band ihg together to draw more business one specific area The old attitude We re do all right whats the worry is no Ion ger In the past few years the post and brewers warehouse ed to other local Beaver Lumber pulled out of the downtown area liquor store and Canad an Tire are short to follow A large hardware store closed down and a theatre On the brighter side two blocks of smaller stores have been added giving a lift to one end of Mam Slreet It would be opportune then for those downtown to have their own group dedcated to making the downtown bigger and better Served Community Well There is a personal sadness at the Herald this week following the dealh of a valued employee length of service is not uncommon at the Herald and Clark was one of its most senior employees raining the staff fresh from high school With the exception of of it at the corner Princess Anne and Charles Street An Idle Summer For Snarly Students This Is going to be a long tough summer far parents of young peoplo in the senior high school and university brackets They re going to be struck with bored restless children And the only thing worse than having a bored restless child on your hands Is a severe cue of the with complications The reason it going to be a id summer is that there ore no Jobs for the majority of young people who would normal be working The other day I carried a brief poll of one of sen tor grades Most of them are bound for or nursing or some inch I uked bow had a Job lined op for the sum tiut of thirty people two had One will work for his fa on a dairy farm The other girl will punch a cash regl iter and only got the Job cause shed worked at It Iast year So there wo have twentyeight frustrated young people I havo the greatest sympathy not them so much as for their par ents Nothing will break up good family relationship more quickly than having a healthy young animal lolling about the house all summer They eat as though every meal was their last one get lazier and lazier staying up late and sleeping In late They have no money for rec and get surlier and tier They develop a feeling being useless and unwanted and resent any advice Too darn bad about spoil brats you say and I agree But that docsn alter the situ atton I d rather live Tor the summer with a porcupine that had an ulcer than a without a job Thousands of them will hit the road like ttie hoboes Great Depresilon drifting ab out the country bumming meals a place to sleep and losing their self respect la the process And Just as the hoboes used to raise enough for the gallon of wine some of these kids will panhandle or steal to get money in order to get high on drugs What the answer Don ask some questions Is it partly the kids fault Yes Some of them would ra thcr bum all summer than clean themselves up to the min imum standards of a pretty free society Others have never done a dirty day work in their lives and would not stoop to menial chores My first Job was clea out lavatories And a great many of them simply sneer at the whole protestant work ethic It all right for the old man but going to do my own thing not work But I think the majority of these kids would welcome a Job of any kind Tough toenails for them There artnt the Jobs- Industry doesnt them for practical reasons They have to be trained for even the simplest factory work and by the time they re producing they re off school again ustry prefers to hire people who are going to be content to put round pegs in round hales for years at minimum wages And speaking of wages the tourist Industry which used to absorb so much student labour can afford ft any more Mia Imam wage laws in Jobs that used to be supplemented by tips have made many resort operators turn their backs on students Why hire an awkward girl waitress with no at a buck fifty an hour or what ever when you can hire expert waitresses from the vast pool of unemployed for the Is it governments fault Partly ISO million the dcial government put up to the students situation was too little and too late and had so many strings attached to It that Mr Benson might Just as well have thrown it into the Ottawa River All It has done Is create an other branch on the rait oak of bureaucracy Thats where good chunk of the money go Its Like foreign aid By the time the wheat or whatever it is trickles down through Che bureaucrats to the natives dents there only a mouthful left Any reader with a modicum comprehension will have by this time that my me I a question man not an daughter Is home from answer man Then lets ask without a Job Anyone have a Job for twenty yearod with big brown eyes a charming grin and hair Qualifications plays a mean piano end guitar and sings types as quickly and ae as her father baa a sunny disposition except when she loafing around home with out a fob fair cook washes dishes faster than an automa tic Ob yes has a terrific Off ECHOES IN THE Red Cross Water Safety Needs Helpers Mr Editor How many Georgetown is know that wo have a local Water Safety Committee
