MAKING THEIR CREDIT GOOD army of worker started out to their knees In he Credit River and finished to their necks In doling Credit River clean up day Saturday The project was Concerned ClUcens of Georgetowns brainchild and held In conjunction the town greenop campaign Here Julie Kerr and Christine Cleave a catch alter only a mo ments fishing homo of Mr and Mrt Robert McDonald Thursday evening May Tho newly elected president Mrs Robert Thorns presided and alone with Mrs McDon- and Mrs Bruce Beckett treasurer conducted the business of tho meeting roll call name jour fav ourite animal was answered by members and visitors Plans were made for delegates to attend the district annual meeting to be held in Acton on Wednesday May Mrs Harvey Clare gave a most in teresting reading and Mrs J In charge of the riculturol program showed movies and gave a very des criptive talk of her visit to Eng- describing the farming districts as well as many inter esting spots visited Mrs H Clare and Mrs Finding debris along the banks of the river and in the water proved no problem for Den nis Wright with Ross Hammer Mark Arcori David Harding and Brian Web- aa bis helpers This one of a of of Irak coughed up by a choking branch of the Credit through town In Saturdays river clean- op by CCOG Brian Web- and Paul rarity the gleanings CHATTING Appreciation of Homeland Added Bonus to Traveller AS YOU may have gath ered travelling is a great love of my life Id rather save my shekels and take a trip than buy furniture clothes etc and the discussion 1 had on this point with those who take the opposite view To each his own MY TRIPS start mentally weeks before we actually set out like to read about the places were planning to visit I dont want to know exactly what theyre going to look like mind you That would spoil the sensation of discovery But I do like to bone up on the his tory of the country and its peo ple the national character istics products and cul I find it gives depth to what we re seeing Often I take along a reference article or book if small to refresh my memory en route AND TALKING about a country In depth something that aids the process surprised are the books I read as a child I had access to an excellent series called The Bookhouse I era volumes were devoted to stories of various lands They were beautifully 11 lustra ted and as we travelled through some of tboso coun tries mentally Id often hark back to those illustrations Which proves certainly the impact books especial ly well illustrated ones can have on a child Those impres sions have stayed with me lon ger than I care to admit SURPRISING TOO the things that impress you first en arrival in a strange country For me Its the roof tops Looking down on England for the first time as the plane circled London the thousands and thousands of chimney pots jutting skyward from slate grey roofs looked strange Indeed to my eyes AND EUROPE colour ful red tiled roofs made ev en the tiniest village pictures que at ft distance at any rate Invariably as we entered a new city it was the roof archi tecture which struck me first and conversely returning homo I looked at our own rooftops really seeing them for the first time Interesting to notice how much our building styles have been influenced by the older countries FURTHER analyzing trav els charms I guess another of tho things I like about It Is the element of surprise And not only where sightseeing Is concerned I like tho surprise element people can bring to travelling coincidence you might call it I EVEN GET a out of hearing about coin eld that happen to others For Instance Col John Bar ber of Barbers Travel Agency was telling us about his trip to Australia New Zealand and Fiji last fall when be was on a travel agents study tour Be fore leaving he had occasion to bo talking to Jim Linton Lyons Court who with his wife had recently visited that area of the world In the course of their conversation Jim told him he would have liked to have given him bis brother in lawe address In New Zealand e for tho fact that the said brotherinlaw wouldnt be home at the time CoL Barber would be there because he was starting out on extensive trav els himself SO WHILE in Fiji Barber took a harbour tour of Suba Fijis capital and main port Happening to sit next to a very affable man they were enjoying a ennt which led to the question Where are you from Upon learning Col Barber was a Canadian his newfound acquaintance volun teered tho information that be had three sisters living In Can ada two in Toronto and one in a small Ontario town called Georgetown Her name Max- Linton AND ROMAN KRAMER of Kramer Construction told me of a coincidence that amus ed him when he was visiting his native Switzerland last fall Ho was enjoying boat cruise on one of beautiful Swiss lakes with as ha thought a boatload of his countrymen Turned out they his coun trymen all right But his NEW Visited England Tells Institute Trip Highlights Womens Institute Webster assisted the hostess May meeting was held at the and served lunch during the countrymen Ho was on board with a large party of tourists from our neighbouring town of THE ONLY niggling reg ret I have about any of our trips is hat they have by nec essity been a little too hurried to fully savour tho atmosphere of the countries and their peo ple BUT MUCH as I love tra velling found there is truth in old adage The sweetest pleasure of any trip Is coming homo again The more I see of the rest of tho world the more I appreciate the beauty of Canada and es pecially this corner of it where we live And it has taught to give thanks for even such mundane things as lots of trees and lots of water We re lucky Terra Forge Could End as Park Peel County council General committee meeting the studio Mr and Mrs Ted Rowan welcomed the lad ies and after short tour they showed a series of coloured slides of many hooked rugs al ong with many other crafts NOT MANY BLOSSOMS The ladles had hoped that their journey to the Niagara Peninsula would coInddo with blossom time but unfortunate ly spring has been a little late this year and only a very few trees showed the promise their coming beauty On the previous Saturday members of the Georgetown Rug Hooking Guild demonstra ted their skill at an Arts and Crafts Show sponsored by the Legion in Bolton Over the last few years in terest In rug booking greatly increased and in Geor getown alone more than one hundred people have taken courses in this craft The Pio neers cut all their doth by hand and used natural dyes to obtain their colours but mod ern techniques permit the use of chemical dyes and tabletop machines for the cutting of the narrow strips NOT FOR FLOOR The making of floor rugs was of prime importance to the Pi oneers but pictures hang ings and chair scats ell added to the list for use in the modern home All these items will be demonstrated in the Rug Show and Hobby Fair to be held in Holy Cross Auditorium
