awake the other night waiting far sleep to overtake me I began to think about tho various noises that keep mo awoke and the ones that help put mo to sleep Which of course was fatal as everybody knows thinking Is one of tho worst sleep deter rents In tho world JUST LET YOUR mind go blank say those lucky souls who go to sleep the min ute they hit the sack Ha That is Just what I was TRYING to do but the blanker it got the more conscious I became of the ticking of an unaccustomed alarm clock we had had port Into the room for the When f started wailing for tho ticks because I suspect ed they were uneven I knew the time had came to my mind so I could forget about them THATS WHEN I began thinking about the various noises that sort of lull me to sleep Odd as it may seem I 1 the sounds of sporadic traf fie going up and down our One car whizzes by I re- ax and wait for the next one and while doing so often fall asleep FVEN THE NOISE of the occasional train doesn bother me In fact it is rather reassuring alls right with ho world people ore up and going about their business and thank heaven Im not of them so off I drift WATCHING TV when I tired and I have to be aw fully tired I must admit can sometimes put me to sleep Then tho conversation or sic which would certainly have kept mo had I been up stairs trying to get to sleep Fades Into pleasant monotones a kind of adults lullabyc I 1 not one of those peo ple gifted with easy dozing so It never ceases to amaze and please me when I get the sensa I on of literally not being able to hold up my eyelids any lon ger without even trying WHICH PROMPTS me to do a little psychologi observation I have had to endure many times in response to complaints about not getting to sleep fast enough You TRY too hard is the verdict Which brings in its wake another pro blem Trying not to try too hard SITTING UNDER tho dry at the hairdressers can sometimes lull me into a stup or pretty closely resembling sleep The hum of the motor so close to my ears blots out all other sounds giving tho illus ion of being for removed from the world while in the midst of it and the heat further olds and abets the slowing down of the thought processes IF CIRCUMSTANCES dicato that a wee nap un der the dryer Is Just what Is needed the desired effect Is hastened if I make sure to set tie myself under it such a fashion that my mouth drop open when I doze off De pending on how the curlers are located on my head this is not such an easy feat But for me its worth the trouble Waking with a start to find your face has betrayed you to such a fashion is not ve to dozing off again I LIKE TO GO to sleep with the roar of wind In the trees outside waves breaking on the shore the patter of rain an the roof as long as there no thunder and lightning with it or sleet driving against the window panes ALL OF WHICH goes show that I obviously like a fair amount of noise to foil as leep by Which probably plains why lying in bed at the cottage when lake Is per fectly calm and silent and there isn t a sound of any kind anywhere I sometimes get a smothering sensation as though I m wrapped in cotton batting which keeps me from falling asleep as quickly as like
