Acton 349 I do hope that our next season I golf will run more smoothly and from Georgetown a little more participation would help Well Saturday past turned out to be another very disappointing day Members or Branch were very Interested in having a ball game arranged with Hanover Legion It was all set up for Saturday July but it sure looked as if Branch ballplayers are all hasbeens or chickens because 10 hours before Red Cross Urges Safety Caution Cut Drowning Of the 313 drownings In percent were children 12 years of age and under and 115 percent youths in the 13 to 21 age group Parents were the main responsibility of is 2 percent or of the total number of drownings because they left their child unsupervised In or around water Included open ditches culverts excavations as new dug basements for homes etc flooded areas caused by heavy rain and home swimming and wading pools Is all that it takes to lose a precious life Parents are responsible Parents are blamed for everything but It Is the parent who Is the closest to the child the parent who lays down the rules for the routines of sleep and play It is the parent who must watch the tiny tots and teach the older ones the value of safe water play Need for strict supervision The Red Cross stresses the need for the strictest supervision of your children The smallest who cannot swim should never be allowed to play near water without life jackets It Is possible for one person to con stantly supervise two or more at one time Parents should not send the little ones along with their kid sisters or brothers to a community pool or waterfront This is unfair to the children who are in charge they won get an opportunity to swim at all or would leave the responsibility to the lifeguards Once again they are not there for the purpose of babysitting Keep the tiny tots in your backyard In a supervised wading pool Supervised because even here an accident can happen If e g a little one who doesnt have too much body form yet gets one of those in datable play rings around the legs and goes head down in that sometimes little bit of water Moles outnumbered females about 5 I Drownings involving water craft almost exclusively a male hazard accounted for 3 percent deaths over onethird of all drownings Almost one of the total number of in the month of August alone It is interesting and to note that the total number of drownings in Ontario in 1970 down from Lets keep It down Review Water Safely Knowledge Learn the rules of water safety practise them yourself and teach them to your children Learn Rescue Breathing Farmers are Early Birds Sunrise Tour Crop Group A new event was undertaken by the Soil and Crop Improvement members this year a Sunrise tour of projects the County The first visit was to the corn combination for control of grasses and broad leaf weeds In com Everyone then travelled by to Tom McGees to Inspect an alfalfa field A portioii of this field was treated some six years ago with agricultural limestone as the was somewhat too low for alfalfa Yields on the treated section of the field were over onehalf ton of hay higher with percent Alfalfa in the stand as compared to only SO percent In the untreated section Soybeans white beans and turnips were discussed at Bill Specks at Hornby Bill has in creased his acreage of soybeans to eighty acres this year and Is hoping for a yield of thirty bushel per acre or higher He has an experimental crop of white beans a crop which may have a future In this county The last stop was to examine a field of trefoil As this crop is let me Branch 120 down Township has agreed to participate In a wildlife management agreement sponsored by the department of j lands and forests The agreement will structured along similar lines to that of an earlier agreement I carried out between Ancaster Township landowners and the department The program originated in Township following a meeting in 1968 among a group of landowners who wanted to ban hunting within the township When they approached the township council with their ban tho use of firearms but could ban the discharge of arms within the township Hunters in the area residents of began protest It was at this point the depart of lands and forests offered Its assistance The department proposed that hunters enter an agreement with landowners for hunting purposes Under the cooperative prol gram between the landowner and the department of lands and forests one third or the Ian downers farm is restricted under a bylaw prohibiting the discharge of firearms on private property with the department acting as an enforcing agent for the landowner while the other two thirds of the land Is used for hunting In Nassagaweya Township Doug Howell extension biologist with the Hes peter office of the department sold the department has been receiving very good cooperation with the organized sportsmen in County and we feel It will continue NO LOSS Mr Howell is coordinating program He noted that in the agreement the farmer I doesnt lose anything through the agreement and it helps maintain good relations between the landowner and the hunter Mr Howell noted that the site was also chosen because of its position within zone two of the Toronto centred region The zone Is being developed extensively by the government for recreational purposes When the program was first being con sidered three other sites were discussed by the department They included Erin and Puslinch townships Under the agreement as well as acting as an enforcing agent under the Gome and Fish Act Mr Howell explained the department would consider helping the landowner improve his land for hunting with in formation and in some case fundi The Nassagaweya program is second wildlife management
