picture in his photo album says Beaver cooking breakfast on the hill near Eugenia overlooking the Beaver Volley And Beaver Is Mrs Hoare of course OUTDOORS By GEORGE HOARE Trouts Hooked Jaw Is Indicative Of Spawning Lake Superior has yielded a new North American angling record for brown trout The fish caught near Washburn Wise weighed lbs was inches in length and girth It had 16 lamprey scars on one side and seven on the other The other previous North American record was lbs for a fish caught in the Whiti River in Arkansas The world record for brown rout is 30 lbs 8 for a fish caught in Scotland In i860 Hooked Jawed Fish At Spawning Time This spring while fishing for rainbows some anglers caught male fish with noticeable hooked lower jaws Such a physical formation is characteristic of this fish and of other members of the salmon family such as and Coho both now present in the Great Lakes Several weeks ago a 26 inch brown rout was found dead in the Black River near Mount Albert Both its lower and upper jaws were hooked to give it an unusual appearance Such hooked snouts appear In males and then only during spawning time Females also undergo some physical transformation but they are not as pronounced At one time some biologists believed that the enlarged teeth and hooked snouts of the males served as weapons in the fight for females Others suggested that these changes served no purpose whatsoever However with advanced techniques of examination it appears that these body changes are directly connected to Internal spawning activity Before en taring the streams to spawn a salmon and trout have a good store of fat in the tissues but as spawning time the fat used up in the development of thi organs of reproduction with the flesh becoming pale and watery During these spawning runs salmon cease to cat In the rapid transfer of fats to the sexual organs an excess of by products arc formed It has been suggested that these by products cannot all be excreted and thus growths are farmed at the ends of the jaws Although salmon die after spawning rainbow trout will return to the lake and spawn several years In a row After its fasting period during the upstream spawning run the rainbow trout becomes rather hungry on its return to the lake then that It rapidly bites at lures worms and spinners Short Life How long docs a deer live This is an interesting question to ask of an animal that faces perpetual hazards such as shortage of food and shelter predators hunters parasites disease and motor vehicles Since the beginning of January a total of deer deaths have been investigated by conservation officers in Parry Sound District Powossan Division Half of these animals did not survive to see their first birthday The above news was received from the Dept of Lands and Forests One For The Book When making my outdoor cheese biscuits I use milk buttermilk or water to make the dough but to me hey usually task the same regardless of what I use
