municipality BILL SMILEY Black Tie Fuss Leaves Bill Cold Page THE GEORGETOWN HERALD THURSDAY AUGUST Well here we are halfway through the summer and 1 been having a whale of a time on my holidays The farthest I ve been away from home with friends scooting to Europe the west coast he east coast Is out to the hotel to deliver or pick up my daughter the waitress ten miles I ve played rive holes of golf been In swimming once and haven even got my fishing rod out of the trunk of the car where It been since last summer If that makes you think I must be a pretty useless tool you re dead on Somehow the days fly by They remind me of tracer bullets which come screaming straight at you and for some reason miss and disappear Good old tracer bullets may I never see one again But that reminds me there is one bright spot ahead The Canadian Fighter Pilots Association la having its biennial gathering at the end of the summer and I Invited to go and poison myself for three days In the company of other sprightly sagging balding chaps per cent of whom I have never met It might be fun but I think 111 pass It up These re unions are more saddening than Joyful I get more fun out of taking out the old album and looking at what I was In those days sloppy hat top button done handlebar moustache and a devilish twinkle in my eye My daughter says the twinkle Is still there though my wife lifts her rows I Just snort Thats the best answer when you re not sure of your ground Perhaps the real reason I won t go is that for one of dinners there Is a note saying Black tie optional Actually look pretty dunged distinguished In a black tie but I detest everything the phrase stands for sophisticated middle class snobbery I m not knocking the old Tighter pilots Host of them came from pretty humble surroundings as I did and have done well In life After all we were the pick of the crop and no snorting please from the army and navy who gave us a hand occasionally and got In our way frequently But black tie optional is a bit rich for my blood And I can hear all the dead ones hooting with laughter at this innocent bit of pomposity And I wonder how many of the alcoholics and the failures will be here black tie or none And there another reunion It s a prisonersof war air force deal This too d enjoy If I knew anybody But I tried one or two of these and wound up as lonely as a lobster at a clam bake All these fat red faced Canadians pounding each other on the back and re telling ancient lies while looked for one familiar face All my friends in prison camp were Czechs and Poles and Norwegians and Rhodes and South Africans and Irish and Welsh and Scots Must have been in the wrong camp And of course there a the an nual convention of the Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association coming up I still have a special relationship with the weeklies and many good old friends among their editors At least I don feel like an outsider at their conventions But I probably won go Who would drive Kim to work Who would settle the fights between her and her mother Who would continue to fall to put up the new clothes line an d repair the handle on the bathroom door No I essential right here at home It a not that I antisocial Id thoroughly enjoy mixing It up wltli old fighter pilots old p w and old editors And I could probably arrange a ride for Kim And the clothes line can lie there and rot for all I core And the bathroom doorknob can wait as It has done for six months It Just that my wife takes two hours to get ready for a swim three days to get ready to go away for a weekend three weeks to get ready for a convention It worth it Maybe 1 11 take a day off and go down to the dock and catch some perch Christie Ustinov Plays Little Theatre Choices Recalling thelrmost successful crowd drawer
