been lost at sea Torpedoed by the enemy In those days our ships had to be convoyed overseas because of enemy submarines I well remember a ship with 300 nurses being bombed the rest of the convoy being helpless in giving aid So that was why my quilt did not reach its destination I had said as I posted that quilt Now If the enemy gets my quilt there will be a one woman war with me and Mr Hitler It was at this time that a notice hadappeared In The Herald from The lions Club who had been collecting fats In a little shed at the rear of what is now Sienkos Shoe Repair but they found that the shed had also become a breeding place for rats and regretfully announced that they were forced to discontinue their effort Since had a huge basement 120x30ft Idecldedtoplckupthe challenge and wrote a poem with this title Song of Victory as usual the Editor published it with a hang this in your kitchen Next the teachers at school took up the challenge It was written on the blackboard and the children copied It down and took It home to mummy It worked 1 had fats brought in via pop bottles babies Pablum boxes etc even in quart baskets was 1 a busy woman Next came word that Andy Clark bad given my poem top spot on his Sunday morning broadcast and of all things a telephone call from Claire Wallace news My Sundays till Evensong at St Georges Church were spent In melting and straining the fats Into oversize tubs which were picked up Monday morning by Harris Abattoir who sent me a small cheque which went to the Red Cross to carry over my cubic ft boxes of used clothing donated by the people of Georgetown A letter In my scrap book tells me that my poem was sent to 300 organizations In Canada who were engaged in the collection of war salvage A careful account was kept of all receipts and boxes sent overseas by The Red Cross ad dressed Mm Vincent care of Canada House London England About four months after I started my campaign I wrote to Harris Co asking how much explosives our fats so far would make The reply you have shipped so far enough fats to make ex plosives to down airplanes or sink it battleships My comment that will teach you Mr Hitler Georgetown means business I cannot supervision of Mr John Bingham All have passed to rest except sister Edith Georgetown has reason to be proud of its past record Not only did we bend every effort In the defence of our God given heritage but we did not forget our worship of the great ana wonderful Creator Just before our dosing at Evensong we sang On Bended Knee this beautiful hymn in supplication to Almighty God Ere we leave thy House 0 Father For our Nation we would plead Guard our Soldiers God of Armies In their need Spare our Sailors in their Peril Monarch of the mighty deep Safely guide them Holy Pilot Safely keep
