Legion Branch Energies Efforts To Be Turned Elsewhere RALPH HA WES At one the best attended general meetings for several lait Thursday the membership of Branch voted to discontinue the sponsorship of Saturday morning hockey thus ending twenty years of unsdQsb effort to bring hockey to kids In thla district by the Branch From where we sat during these last few months It was and evident that the roe question developed Into Itical ball game which was Ice time a being played by some persona with no real Interest In recreation for the youth of Georgetown It seems hard to understand bow after almost twenty years of harmony and understanding with what was the arena board a situation such as the one that exists now could develop One thing is for sure the Royal Canadian Legion has not changed community work is and will continue to be one of the organization main projects Now the energies and efforts of Branch 110 will be turned elsewhere in community work PIPED IN Branch IS Brampton were general meeting have decided that after years of running Saturday Morning Kid Hockey we can no longer con tlnue There baa been much publicity over the negotiations between ourselves and the Farts Recreation Committee resulting from the Increase in charges for Ice time and I feel at this time we of Branch 120 should try to explain the position as we see it Hockey but found themselves unable to continue and there was no hockey in year 19501991 at which time at a meeting between the Town and Legion it was decided by the Branch to take over whole program k with the town providing Arena free of charge This arrangement worked extremely well for many years with the number of participants growing rapidly and the number of voluntary workers expanding correspondingly During this time It was found to be more convenient to have the Arena Board provide ice scrapes etc and the Legion footed the bill It should be noted that during this period the boys paid nothing except for insurance which was available on an optional In the year of 1969 we were informed by the Arena Board that a charge of 7 per hour was to Initiated and after a meeting between the Board and us we agreed to collect this money from the boys A registration fee of per boy was levied to offset part of the cost We received a letter from the Parks Recreation Committee in the month of July 1971 In forming us that the ice rates werelobeflSOOperbour with a of SI per participant for season of 1971 1972 with a proposed charge of per hour for 1972 1973 This charge we felt was exorbitant an In crease of 100 percent over two years and almost percent over three years I accordingly asked to discuss the matter with the Committee After this meeting the charge for time prior to a was reduced to SO with the remainder at US with the grant back of It per par tlclpant This was still con sidered too high and we requested the Town Council to receive a delegation from the Branch as the Parks Recreation Committee informed us that they were tied to a We presented our brief and after a short discussion by some members of Council we were told by the Mayor to go back to the Parks Recreation Com mittee to try to reach an agreement and falling this to come back to Council At the meeting with this Committee the Chairman said that the difference between them and us was only per boy and we offered to collect this and band over the full amount collected to the Committee There was some disagreement as to whether thla a total of SO or 3 90 when we pointed out that the registration was with 1100 to cover insurance The Chairman then asked If we would collect 75 per boy and to this we agreed This was subject to the approval of the Committee and at this point we understood we had reached a tentative agreement The next day I received a letter delivered by hand In which it was stated that the Committee had rejected our proposal of 75 ana offered us boy with no grant back If we did not wish to accept this offer the offer of 7J and was open In my letter to The Herald last week I explained what happened at the Council meeting after Councillor wham we saw for the first time during the whole negotiation proceeded to that the Legion was only paying percent of the cost of ice time I should point out that we were never obligated to pay for Ice time our obligation was to 37teamsatacosttou3of In closing I won 1 1 to ex press that the gods were against Branch as they went down to an early defeat It seemed to be that Branch from Brampton had everything on their side Yes It was Branch 15 that went home happy and carried all the trophy hardware with them The tournament itself was a very successful day There were six of the eleven Branches in the zone represented Acton Georgetown Brampton Oak vllle Cooksville and Port Credit The games themselves were highlighted by some very fine defensive play and some very fine hilling power by all teams playing The Georgetown Team con of Bob Burns Gib Telford Tom Harlow Dave McLeod Hopper McLeod Tom James Mike Bond George Louth and Jim Wallace Just enough players for a starting lineup and these boys had to play all the way for three complete games These fellows deserve a fine hand for their efforts and stamina I do hope that next time out some of the all talk ballplayers might find a woy to try their hand and help the comrades that played their hearts out for Branch On October IS the zone tournament will take place in Port Credit if Branch players con get a couple of teams together lor that day From a Branch of our size we leave an awful lot to be desired as far
