Flip GEORGETOWN HERALD THURSDAY DEC 3D New Trinidad Appointment For Rev Arthur Dayf d news of former town family the Rev Arthur who spent moat of his time In Trinidad following ordination a United Church minister write an an nua Christmas letter to report on year a activities there He is the son of Mrs C B and the late Mr The family lived In the present Gerry Smeitink home on Market Street until bis parents moved to Victoria BC Since Mr Dayfoot a death Mrs has made her home with her son and family Mr and his brother Harry operated the Shoe Company on John Street at one time one of the town main In tries noted for Its production of quality boob including a nationally known ski boot The factory was purchased a few years ago by Albert Eutendef who has converted the building into an attractive group of town houses Here Is Mr Dayfoot a letter Presbyterian Manse Rlveradale WllllamsvillePO Trinidad I Dear Friends As you see from the above address our Christmas and New Year Greetings this season come from a new appointment for work the Church We are now settled In the Pastoral Charge and are en Joying the comparatively quiet surroundings of a rural pastorate we do not even have a telephone quite a change from our previous Job where It was constantly ringing vends is a small village eleven miles northeast of San Fernando It is an Important centre of the Church a primary school the manse and the church stand side by side serving a considerable country area In addition there are five other village congregations in the charge known as St Maraval and Morichal Since few people have cars it Is not practical to unite any of these congregations and so elders and other lay people conduct many of the services since the minister can only get to three or at most four of the six services each Sunday Last year this charge led the entire island by being the only one to exceed Us financial allocation It was then served by a dynamic young minister Rev Winston GopauT who was or dained in 1969 Early this year he was called to the large San Fernando congregation Susamachar This left Riversdaie vacant for mdnths Rami the TabTquIle pastoral charge Itself an amalgamation smalt rural charges This la located north of In the Central Range of Trinidad known as the Mont serrat Hills During the July September vacation it was servedbyastudentrninister Mr Peter Moonsie But when he returned to the United Theological College of the West Indies in Jamaica I have had to take responsibility for the work taking occasional Sunday ser vices weekday meetings and so on Fortunately there are active elders and other lay leaders who lake moat of the services as well as carrying on other activities There are four congregations Trace and 24Mile as well as and Town The Trinidad Church has suffered during the past year from the death of two active Rev Paul Sharma and Samuel Ishmael as well as two retired ministers Revs Stephen and Joseph Chauharjaslngh Thus the shortage of pastors Is more acute than ever even with the or dination of one new graduate Rev Cyril Paul In July He la serving in San Juan near Port St Andrew Theological College where we last served continues Its work under the visited many churches to dif ferent parts of Ontario telling some about the Church In the- West India and the new vision of world wide Mission When In Canada we became much concerned that the Church should be doing more In con sultatiod with the Churches of the Caribbean with the West Indians who are now numerous in Toronto and other places It is true that these guests of ours do not have aa much of a language problem as many other New Canadians but they have other difficulties More needs to be done so that they may feel at home In the Canadian com munity We believe this Is one lie new conception of Mission through co operation between Christians In the world wide Church This implies exchange of leadership wherever needed Instead of the western countries Una and the Third World countries all the receiving of lei as In the past This has called Mission on five continents We have accepted it In tneory and the Board of World Mission has been putting it In practice by a more flexible policy of overseas appointments Yet It Is still too easy simply to follow old patterns both at home abroad Are we ready to launch out in new methods of partnership The United Church has a new Division of Mission in Canada this new Division find ways of liaison with other denominations In Canada and with overseas Churches in co operation with the Board of world Mission or Its successor Division so that a truly world wide perspective is reached One way might be consultation with our sister Churches In the West Indies on the basis of equality concerning the use of trained personnel with a view to the appointment some West Indian Church workers for periods of service In Canada Just as Canadian workers have served In the West Indies in the past Also during our furlough I attended the United Church General Council at Niagara Falls as Overseas Ministerial Representative from the Caribbean area It was moving to be a part of the Joint sessions with the General Synod of the Anglican Church as we work and plan towards union I also met some old friends whom I had not seen for many years Soon after Bessie having taken a refresher course took a part time job in her old profession of nursing at Sun nybrook Hospital in Toronto She it very much and found traduced new ideas and excellent programmes and we are happy to have this important braining centre at last in the hands of an outstanding Trlnidadian leader The policy accepted two years ago of gradual withdrawal of Canadian missionaries and of financial help from the Board of World Mission of the United Church during the next few years is already well under way and the necessary adjustments are being made year by year We hope that it will not be too much at the expense of the weaker charges and such valuable Institutions as the lere Home for Girls and the Archibald vocational Institute which are difficult to support from local resources In any case we are here to help In one rural district for a term with the hope of strengthening the fay leadership so that whatever happens the Church will continue to witness and to serve In this predominantly rural Princes Town Presbytery We are still in the same Presbytery as before Indeed our whole period of service In Trinidad has been this in the southern part of the Island Some of you saw us at one time furlough in Canada mom TW was a busy but time ft was to flm furlough on which we had car It was good and m people more also for Ctttttta TOKffigWsrlflUon that the basics of nursing haven changed although the equipment and medicines have changed much in thirty years On fortunately she can t continue this line week In Trinidad but there Is plenty else to do here including music training for church young people and women Work In the ten congregation we serve Cathy graduated from the Centre for Christian Studies formerly Covenant College at the end of April and obtained employment as office secretary at Lodge Toronto This Is a vocational training home for slightly retarded girls and Cathy is able to know and help he girls as well as look after office details Her apartment address is 129 Ave Toronto We are happy to announce Dayfoot S In going over the list of those to whom this letter goes we have been wondering in some cases about people whom we have not met nor heard from for some years Perhaps your ad dress has changed or you may have lost interest in hearing from us If you do wish to continue receiving our letters please let us hear from you BILL SMILEY How To Save A Girl From Love New Year a resolutions seem rather pointless when one looks back over the past year and realizes what a mess one made of It But hope springs eternal In the human beast note toed beast not breast and most of the time I feel as though I still animal though I have a lot of calcium in the wrong places not teeth but elbows knees and shoulders and there are moments when I feel pure vegetable maybe a withered turnip So here goes The very first thing I m going to do in is get my rake and lawn chairs out of the backyard and into the basement Provided I can find them under the snow Same goes for my woodpile which has been sitting there drying out since August The second thing 111 do Is stop listening to my wire and make her start listening to me She is eternally getting into Jams because she won t listen to me because she never has because she thinks she knows more than I about practically anything you can name And she Is forever letting me Into jams because I isten to her because she thinks etc That will clear a lot of the fug In our domestic air I know You think that a like a mouse bragg that he a going to straighten out elephant And It is But its also a fact that we mice have been known to panic a whole herd of elephants Anyway it II be fun trying That old spirit of ad venture you know Even if It does cost me a broken nose or a couple of thick cars Another thing I going to do Is stop worrying I a terrible worry wart Some weeks I worry a total of twenty seven minutes about something I can do a thing about I going to cut that down to twenty seven seconds do It once a week and get it over with I going to give up late nights They take a terrible toll on a fellow when he must work next day No more of those Except on exceptional cases such as Friday and Saturday nights and anytime we go to a party or have one Or anytime I really feel like staying up I going to put a stop to my daughter falling in love This will be one of the trickier assign I just get nicely adjusted to the fact that she deeply in love and settling down when I get word that it s oil with the old and and this time it real In the past year she a been the church tor a longawaited on her part embrace I am steadily growing more sinful Just like the rest of you but it time to start straightening the accounts Well that a enough to keep me going for the year A nice mix lure of physical and psycholo gical problems In closing thanks to all those who have written during the year Forgive me If I haven answered yet Have a good year And a special wish to all those In trouble Western farmers the unemployed the old the men tally ill Keep your chin up Things can only get better And remember somebody Is thinking about you Maybe Edgar Benson won t but I will A large attendance enjoyed the Christmas Eve Communion
