Flowers panning through the snow These summer posies poking through the white blanket produced a startled reaction In anyone strolling past the home of Mr and BLOOMIN STRANGE Mrs Bill King at the Camp between Georgetown and Nerval Closer in spection confirmed their plastic phonyncss However flowers in he garden of Mr and Mrs Wtlf Main Street North December were very real The unusual December mildness coaxed an entire patch of violas into Ion a ry In Zambia for years following or dination as a United Church minister Rev James Kirk wood this year wrote his Christmas letter from Toronto Son of Mr and Mrs James 4 Pauline Street ho attended Blue Mountain school when his parents lived at then Georgetown high school and Emmanuel College University of Toronto His friends here will be in Zambia One of the main emphases of Jims work had been the training of lay preachers to lead worship ser vices and preach in the churches This Involves four courses In Old Testament New Testament Church Doctrine and Worship Each course lasted between six and nine months and the people participating arc- required to do assignments weekly and to write an exam at he end After completion of the four courses each person has to preach a trial sermon and to be interviewed by a member of the Presbytery committee They are then en titled to receive certificates as local preachers It was very rewarding to have Rev Jolly of the Presbytery com mittee with us In March to present certificates to sixteen people in the congregations of Kalulushl West and Chibuluma In the field of ecumenical relations we were working more closely with our Anglican and Catholic friends In addition to the monthly worship services followed by aiscussions had been carrying on for some lime in the Englishspeaking part of town some new things were tried Jim worked with Fr Cornelius Catholic and Fr Pcake Anglican in a project as farm labourer with a group of young people during the Christmas vacation This was an attempt to demonstrate the Importance of work with the hands the importance of igriculturc In particular and the Importance of the church being Involved In the world rather than only involved with spiritual matters education a step In cooperation was made when It was agreed that Religious Instruction In the local primary school should be done an an Interdenominational rather than a denominational basis This means that Instead or fragmenting the classes by denomination and one person having to leach all Catholics for example from age 7 to each Grade is taught by one teacher This has meant that wc could make an attempt to leach the things which arc common to our faith rather than those which divided In the Secondary School also teaching has been done on a non denominational basis Another aspect of ecumenism was the joint communion ser vices held a few times with the Anglican church believe this was a first for Zambia Finally again this year we held our In terdenominational procession behind the cross on Good Friday marching and singing through the streets of the town and finishing with a short outdoor service at the football stadium April was a memorable month because of the By this time It seemed that wc would probably not be returning to Zambia In immediate future and so it was with a great deal of Sain that said farewell to riends in Ihe and Copperbelt areas Of nil the farewell occasions one evening especially remains In our memory First we were Invited for ten to our friends Titus and Hilda who are teachers at Tea turned out to be a fullcourse Zambian meal of and chicken and various side dishes Then wc went to a concert sponsored by the choirs at Kalulushi West church In ad dition to a treat of marvellous singing and very funny skits we were served food on three more occasions during the evening by mid refuse so we very well from the satiated We left Zambiaon April 16 and spent two weeks louring in of Europe Memories here in clude the fantastic splendour of ancient Greek architecture in Athens and the fantastic splendour of Gods architecture in the Austrian Alps Holland put on a marvellous display of tulips and daffodils for our enjoyment May 2 saw our return to Canada and to reunions with our families- everyone except brotherinlaw Pete was able to be with us for a few days Although our reunion was sweet it was also short In middle of May Jim began a course at the Canadian Urban Training Centre for Christian Service which operates from Wood Green Neighbourhood House In downtown Toronto He took an Intensive course for six weeks until the end of June and is now involved in an onthejob training project until next June as part of the yearlong course The em phasis is on providing some knowledge of sociological skills and applying them to the situation in the church so that the church con be more relevant to the needs of people In the city by helping them become more aware of their situation ana how to gain power to act to im prove it Jim particular project is helping three churches down town to set up a Service to provide temporary work for unemployed persons Although it is a new field for him it is exciting and challenging We dont know yet where it will lead but probably Into some sort of Inner city work The other thing which we have been doing since returning to Canada is deputation that is speaking in churches about Zambia This is something that we enjoy very much probably because we love Zambia so much It has been especially good to be with friends In churches where we previously had a connection In addition to discussing the work of the church in Zambia we have been trying to point out the problems which Zambia faces because of her geographical position surrounded as she Is on three sides Rhodesia South Africa Mozambique and Angola nil countries with white minority governments hostile to Zambia What Is Canadas role towards Zambia and the other free countries of Africa How con sistent is our trading policy or our Involvement In multi national corporations with our human Christian concerns for Justice eg in volvement In Ihe Cabora Dam In Mozambique If you want to know what we think write us Also the Africa for this year has good food for thought and action The Black Paper la a critique of the Governments policy towards Southern Africa Get It read It discuss it act on it It fa available from Canadian Council for In ternational Cooperation Spark Street Ottawa at cents a copy or 50 cents In bulk A personal note to end on spare school for Retarded Children in Scar borough and has adjusted very well He is developing social and communication skills which should stand him in good stead later In life Jane and Joy have settled into the Canadian school system well In spite of dire predictions from English friends in Zambia They are both a year ahead of their peers In the Canadian system Kenny goes to kindergarten half days and continues to keep the rest of the family hopping and amused Plans for the summer tentatively Include a camping trip to Saskatchewan and British Columbia so you may find us parked on your doorstep some evening in August We were pleased to be asked to be staff people at the Missionary Orientation Conference during July next year As we have indicated above the longterm future is uncertain at the moment but we will not be returning to Zambia in the im mediate future We are on a leave of absence from the Board of World Mission and will be looking for a Job In Canada next summer This will be the last letter circulated by the
