IN THE MAIL BAG How About Encouraging The Public to Recycle RR5 Georgetown Editor The Georgetown Herald Dear Sir I refer to your article on paper recycling doomed to fail In February l Herald The Georgetown council endorsed the idea of separation of paper from garbage in March 1972 Is that all Ihey did endorse the Idea Couldn t they manage a little constructive action Further negativism faces in the town engineer Mr Willis simplistic analysis or the costing The going rate for trade in paper is per ton in Toronto with belter rates for bulk titles not per ton He neglects to consider the possible savings If he new dump so proudly announced recently at a cost of MO plus Interest could be stretched to say years Instead of 15 Newsprint plus recycling wrappings ac counts for around 40 percent by volume of domestic garbage A further radical step might be taken by the council endorsing separation of metal cans flattened of course and glass garbage commodities which can be sold at approximately and IS per ton respectively The Herald reported hat the Brownies raised for three tons of nodeposit no return bottles and a quantity of glass The encouragement of vegetable composting where feasible completes the picture Domestic garbage to dump reduced to 25 percent of former volume life of new dump extended to say years The findings following the Burlington pilot project recommended en couragement of public well how about Provision by the council say for one week in every two months of load luggers hoppers into which residents could deposit their recycablcs would start the community project going A convenient location for the collection would be the plaza Some of the stores might welt assist In the arrangement since they arc the originators of much of the unnecessary packaging garbage foisted on con in the name of vice and convenience Mr Willis could hardly plead excessive handling costs with such an arrangement We also need concerned residents Must any constructive move on waste management wait until all available holes in the ground and vacant land arc choked with gar boge before aesthetically and ecologically more action Is taken Is Toronto present plight too far away to raise any alarm locally for the future Sincerely John Mitchell Pamela Mitchell No Valid Reason for Such Cruelty Finch The Georgetown Herald Georgetown Ontario Dear Sir For a number years now Canadian citizens have been requesting the government to abolish the leghold traps which are used to obtain wild animal furs but the answer given by the government is that there are not enough humane traps available for the trappers But why does the government not un dertake an extensive trap research programme to develop good humane traps The provincial and federal governments receive sub stantial royalties from the trapping industry so why not use the money to develop humane traps Then they can abolish the leg hold traps like other countries have done years ago Thatwouldputanendto this barbaric and atrocious cruelty caused by these and other inhumane traps and not leave the burden of developing humane traps to volunteer organizations There is absolutely no valid reason Tor such un necessary cruelty to wild animals I urge our Canadian people to please write to their elected representatives requesting that the manufacture use and sale of leghold traps be forbidden in Canada Yours truly Mrs J What If Wells Contaminated It 1 Georgetown Editor Herald Since Ha iris ton has been able to stop the dumping of Toronto garbage in their area lets congratulate Speyside Ratepayers or their approval of the site below Acton We can only hope that the so called solid waste disposal include the or thousand tons of sludge men a week or so ago in one of the Toronto papers In any case the Black Creek should be able to carry off any liquid waste as far as the Credit near Georgetown It would be interesting to know what the proposes to do if they find out this innocuous garbage did cause well pollution from dcrground seepage It would seem to be too late once the wells were contaminated which is of course very unlikely if not impossible Thats Why Its Late Sometimes Crcse To the Editor As a carriers mother I would like to direct my remarks to all the people who have The Herald delivered by a carrier boy or girl First of all I d like to point out the fact that this is a weekly paper available every Thursday either from a carrier or in the shops Second this is not a morning paper Those customers who get their papers early in Ihe morning are fortunate Indeed but it should not be expected as a right rather as a favour Many of the carriers are small youngsters who may have or more papers to carry in a bag as big as he Is and almost as heavy then have to cope with the cold and snow not to mention having to ward off dogs who don I bite Third did ever eon that these same youngsters who do their fob well occasionally get sick and have to get a substitute carrier who is not familiar with the where to put the paper such as between the doors in a milk box etc I hope this win clear up a few points and explain why deliveries are occasionally later than usual Thank you Yours truly Mrs Colter Glen Williams Dance Success Ball Club Plans Another Volunteers Made Survey Possible HERALD THURSDAY FEB Page Those attending were June DID YOU KNOW festival fortheadults tickets with one prize a trip to the Bahamas will be sold Next Monday night February the Minister of Finance will present his all important budget to the House of Commons As everyone has predicted the budget the debate following It and finally the vote will be of critical im portance to the existence of this government They must rabbits out of the hat in an attempt to gain the support of either or both of Progressive Conservative and New Democratic parties prlsuigly this would not be too difficult If the only were the upcoming udget During the election campaign both of the major opposition parties detailed their tax and fiscal The government now what will satisfy the opposition and will make every effort o gain their voting support The budget will certainly include per Income tax cuts a revision of the DREE program to try to satisfy the corporate welfare bums charges and sub Hal assistance to old age pensioners CORPORATF TAX CUTS However their task is considerably complicated by the fact that the substantial tax changes announced In the last budget of May 1972 have not yet been passed into law by Parliament refer particularly to the percent corporate tax cuts and the generous fast write off provisions given Industry The were of course unhappy But more the PCs very strongly stated at the time thai corporate cuts without personal Income lax cuts would not work We feel that consumer must be left with more money through tax cuts in order to be able to afford the expanded production brought about by the corporate cuts If there is not a dual approach the extra money left with cor rat ions merely ends un as greater profits This is exactly what has happened The economy has not expanded as evidence by the January unemployment figures of CANNOT RENEGE The government problem is that it allowed business to operate last year as though the corporate cuts were in effect on the presumptuous basis that they would win the election and then pass the necessary legislation They can hardly now renege on this committment Thus the government s real dilemma will come to the fore w hen to pass into law the necessary legislation to implement both of East and this v car budget proposals maintain their power and their credibility all at the same time If a problem idea comment or criticism or if you simply wish to get in touchwithme please
