Georgetown Herald A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Main Street South Georgetown Ontario WALTER Publisher Pagci GEORGETOWN HERALD THURSDAY MAR 1973 EDITORIAL COMMENT Fitting Tribute That two dinner sittings were necessary to accommodate those wishing to pay their respects to Ernest tells the story Retiring as business manager at Georgetown district high school Mr evening in his honour at North Halton Golf Club The response was terrific The former board member has been much more than a school employee since he joined the staff And although his years of service were not lengthy the dedication and extra effort he put into the job his rapport with staff and students was of lifetime scope Mr got his own education the hard way Short on formal school training he is a truly educated man through his own efforts His facility with the spoken and written word has been exemplified time and time again in his public appearances He is always able to say just the right thing in the right way He possesses a nigh sense of values and unlike many of his years there is no generation gap in contacts with youngsters Befitting a man who will never cease to learn one of his retirement projects is a study of Louis I never had enough time for reading he says May he be blessed with time in abundance in the years ahead Merchandising Healthy Life Merchandising particularly in the hardware line must be a healthy life The Herald had a visit last week from a former Main Street merchant who at age is still enjoying life in his home com munity of Wiarton A E left town in selling his business to the late Jim Richardson His successor also enjoyed a long and active life and was on duty in the store until close to his own birthday Mr Cordingley purhcased the Graham Clements hardware business and operated it until his sale to Mr Richardson He then went to where he was in a similar business for several years He was active in community affairs when he lived here par ticularly in the merchants association of that day Life has treated him well He has his driver licence and operates his own car in By coincidence readers of the Sugar Spice column may have noticed his mention in that column a few weeks ago Columnist Bill Smiley once editor of the Wiarton Echo devoted one of his columns to reminiscences centering around incidents which involved Mr Scarcity of Merchants Attending the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce the minority of merchants in at tendance was noticeable The Chamber in existence for many years is an established organization in the community But it suffers from minimum support from that segment which should be its most active members No one can benefit more directly from an active Chamber than a merchant In many towns the Chamber is slanted too much towards this and tends to become a merchants group In Georgetown industrial support has always been good and if one were to augment this with better support from businessmen we would have an organization second to none We realize that many mer chants particularly those with smaller personalized operations have limited time and limited energy But we urge that everyone in business give at least token support to the Chamber of Com merce Directors normally hold noon luncheon meetings the first and third Wednesdays at North Golf Club Members are welcome to bring pertinent business by message or in person to these meetings OPINIONS OF OTHERS Shirking Our Responsibilities The lack of respect shown officials of our sporting con testa should be of major concern all members of this society Players coaches managers parents spec ators and executive of all major sports increasing show of disrespect for the men appointed handle these games is of great concern to me and it should be to all of you Without an official to arbitrate Ihe rules of a game it becomes no contest and yet these men are loo often In my contacts with most of these sports I have never mcl a dishonest official but cannot say the same for some players coaches or parents I have met The impression left on young boy in his formative stages or one or those mentioned livid with rage screaming and cursing about a decision of which inmost cases he knows very little cannot help but be detrimental to the building of the boy and his respect or disrespect for authority the law itself I would like to quote from an article on minor hockey be fully written by Cardinal McGulgan lhal would apply to ail sports The philosophy of some directors seems to be winning is not only the most important matter it is that milters S I WIlI f i in re MIL GUARD GREETING ECHOES AGO A WAS formed to coordinate plans for Georgetown part in celebrating Canada birthday MEAT PRICES IN 19G3 taken from depreciation and other expenses other than labour were deducted It gave a return of cents per hour on the average Although our idea or ports is not mailers not whether you win or lose but how you play the game Yet how our boys ore taught to play the game determines Ihe contribution character which is an alleged reason for organized for Men who teach boys to win at any cost betray Ihe trust of Ihe parents of our country and of God A youthful hockey player s attitude towards the referee is a reflection of his attitude towards authority A teen aged boy who curses a referee simply must be taught to respect Ihe authority of the man with the whistle Juvenile delinquency on ice should be no more tolerable than on the street Mutilation if innocent boys in alleys evokes prolonged protests from decent citizens mutilation on the ice is often encouraged by these same citizens Assault on the streets of our cities brings to the culprit a jail sentence or a heavy fine assault on the ice brings
