THE HERALD Wednctdiy January is ib Page Take a look at need for crossing guard FATHER pastor of Holy Cross Parish waa rushed to Georgetown Memorial Hospital Wednesday evening with an attack of acute us say his appendix removed Thursday with no complications Father is recovering nicely and should be back to bis old self before too long Province puts off Lords Day action To the Ed lor of the Herald SolhecouneHdoesn I seem to be going to put crossing guard back at the Maple Avenue Street crossing even though at one time a tie vote for this purpose showed much support Incidentally the acting mayor for he night used his prerogative to the tie and vote against the measure The writer of this letter was at council meetings twice concerning this and thanks the council and committee tor polite consideration of all facts resented by the delegation In act the writer who was the spokesman once was com by councillor on his Intelligence in the matter But that prove novating He knew that anyway Several of the parents presented strong reasons for a guard at this crossing but certain councillors were against this and apparently the safety officer as well could not be convinced against their will justified You guessed It the two men who had made up minds about this crossing months ago Bromley and councillor M Arm strong who claim they have investigated the scene for guard needs only found what they wanted to find 1 the two named honestly believe that this is loo harsh a judgement and It a saving of face on their part let them state facts not opinions In on to this charge In making this so called Judgement did they watch the school traffic through all the crossing times at the Maple crossing lights and at the crossing at the end of the sidewalk at Maple and Delrex Did they see how the over worked guard at this latter place has to watch three places at once as well as con the volume of traffic he has to control there Did they see the number of motorists who rush the lights both before and after the warning light changes Did they see how many children crossed the lights when the lights said Don Walk Did they see high school students and some adults crossing no matter what the lights said Did they see any of the smaller children copy their seniors Did they do this on a day a foggy day a slippery snowy day bitterly cold day or Just on a beautiful sunny day such as when the safety officer made his first test of the crossing with his safety machine Did they take a full traffic count for the stretch of Maple Avenue from to during the four crossing times Did they find out from the schools concerned how many children come to them from the other side of Maple Avenue Did they take the time to see the poor little tykes wading knee deep in slush from the high school entrance Did they notice the same poor little lyks having to walk right out on le street at dismissal time to avoid the snowballs crowded sidewalks and milling high school students waiting for their buses In other words did they make their observations complete and under all weather con dlllons Let them answer these questions before council makes Its final decision Council is apparently waiting to If traffic lights will be installed at Delrex and Maple Councillor Ernie Hyde who was acting mayor once said he would stack these up against any crossing guard Slippery situation don ire guard there few paltry dollars which could Prime pare- and do put one back at the post be multiplied in coats and voter and farmer office charges many times over If an crossing guard who la well If you dont what are you accident occurs because of mire of the dangers and needs saving Somebody s face Or a council negligence Alan this particular crowing CBC star coming ByDonOHearn Queens Part Bureau Or The Herald Currently there Is a good example of what baa probably been the main weakness of government in Ontario for the past two decades Procrastination is perhaps not the precise word for It but It la close Anyway In the action or lack of It of the government on the Lord pay Act the weakness Is front and center For he past couple of years there has been a lot of con over the Lord a Day Act More and more stores began opening on Sunday and contravening the law Some people liked this Others didn But in any event the opposition began pressing the government for not enforcing the law It eventually promised to do something and a year ago it brought out a green paper outlining alternatives that might be taken Subsequently SolicitorGeneral George Kerr the minister responsible held public meetings throughout the province to sound out public feeling and reported he would have a government position ready by this fall But he didn Instead he said he position would be put off until the resumed session in the winter Put off This has been the story of PC government pretty well since 1948 George Drew a man of quick decision end quick action But since him our leaders have been slow and cautious And this has been costly While Mr Kerr and colleagues ore making up their minds still more stores are opening on Sundays Not corner stores but big chain operations The public is getting used to future It won bo able to because the- public stand for It And If they are allowed to open then why not all business furniture stores were open In Toronto on New Year Day As It did when Leslie Frost returned from the Coronatk planning scheme and t Which means that today we have regional governments which practically nobody likes and which probably would not have been necessary If he had acted And as it did when it promised action on land from the 1950s on and really only acted last year after speculation had got completely out of bounds To the Editor of The Herald I was very interested In a age news Item luslness like snow is Wednesday January edition On December 3rd Wed morning I slipped and had a freak fall In front of the Medical Centre Just south of snow had not been removed 1 noticed the religion Holy Cross Grade Eight students Howie Patty receive religious instructions from Brother Mike Sawchuk the new assistant at Holy Cross Parish Who needs it By Tom Bui hey The option booklets have come and the students will be selecting their courses for next year Perhaps you should consider the following before choosing your courses Every student knows that Latin Is dead Nobody speaks it So why take It You don t need iL No university requires it for entrance Besides no school board guarantees it So If you happen to take a liking to the subject you might well find yourself stuck for an option In Grade II or 11 because there might not be enough of you to make up a claw then miss the needed prerequesltes far another subject at that level Better play It safe and not take It at all Besides languages are hard and Latin even harder so why bother Take your university requirements English math physics and chemistry or If that is too hard biology and if you have still room on your timetable take something mare relaxing like phys or music or art for you already homework enough in your sciences Take French If you want a language which at least Is spoken somewhere even though they don the kind of French spoken In Quebec What every student docs not know is that the universities have stopped rogues lino tain subjects in a bid for larger enrolments not out of the conviction that those subjects would not make a desirable does he know that no language Is more alive than Latin since It forms the educated in moat European tongues And so he does not realize that a grain ding In Latin would male his later studies so much easier facilitate we would call that in educated English If he could take the big words apart and understand their meanings rather than have to learn a foreign nomenclature by heart grasping neither the meanings nor the spelling of his tools of trade But apart from the Immediate practicality of a subjectyou need it the idea that education Is for life not just a Ere para Hon for the next course i beyond the horizon of many students You cannot blame them If they see no point In history or and English tern re either except that the latter is occasionally required for further study They do not realize that they ore not going to be engineers hours a day seven days a week and that even If they were they would be dealing with a lot of people who are not and with whom they must find a common ground for communications at work as well as at play So the glorious picture of a broad educational basis with options galore has become a caricature of itself academic student there would be a wider choice If he wanted to admit that university Is not for him But who does In the Junior grades In high school So the high schools march along to the monotonous tune or the piper the tunc of university requirements math sciences English All the rest you don need La tin is now Indeed just about dead the other humanities are losing ground too And everyone is amazed hat someone can neither spell nor read in spite of his A Everyone except a few old Latin dodos MIDWEEK SPECIAL When you buy a Thrift Box at the regular price you get j FRENCH FRIES
