Turner as renter InmvJdual players moat important for us all It Is the stage of organizing it imperial hat North Halton hosts playdowns Wrestlers regain championship Georgetown area for the pas 1 26 years In fact ever since he moved hen from Saskatchewan Begins low was Georgetowns gain His contribution to local hockey has been to say the least considerable His wifes name Janice and they have two children Blake and Rons first venture into local hockey circles was with the Industrial league He was there only a half season and J was picked up the the then local Junior C team Hii hockey talent was obvious and be was approached by the towns Intermediate A team This was all the beckoning Ron needed and for the next 11 years Including two All- Ontario Championships he performed with the In to termedlate A team one of the local favorites problems eventually forced him out of playing aspect of hockey but his love for the game pushed him into the coaching ranks For many a Georgetown youngster this Is the only role in which they envision Ron His bantam teams won the division title two years in a row and the grand championship once In he midget ranks he led his various teams to three AllStar Ontario finals At present Ron Is head coach of the Georgetown Minor Hockey Support Group Ron would like to along some formal and some Informal advice to those youngsters currently playing hockey To be a good player you must discipline This means setting regular hours turning down the oc casional chance for a good time and above all getting ft proper rest Set up a regular timetable for when you should get to bed and the night before a game give yourself an extra hour or so of sleep In same sense of self- dtscinUne you must realize that icetune do not give you or your coaches enough time to Institute a good training program to get you In shape for the season ahead As Ron says You dont need Ice to condition yourself Get out and gel moving before the season start Exercise get yourself Into reasonably good shape because in the Jong run you and only you from being In shape before the season starts As for the game Itself Ron feels too many young players waste time and effort by circling Admit It how often have you done this without even realizing It Dont turn your back on the play Try and keep your eyes on the puck at all times Make conscious effort concentrate on the play then you wont expend energy needlessly More Importantly you wont be caught out of position by worthless circling Passing la an integral part of hockey but one that la Often overlooked As Ron points out most players slap at the puck when making a passing attempt This Is not the correct way to execute a pass When making a pass you should push the puck There should be very little wrist action Try passing with your wrists stiff Concentrate on accuracy As your sense of where the puck should go develops so also wfil your sense of what type of pass to use develop A flashy looking bang pass looks pretty foolish when It Concentrate on accuracy Variations will come In time Ron cites the passing of Howe to back up his contention Howe rarely slaps the puck bis passes are more of an extended push and who could honestly argue with Gordie Howe when It comes to playing hockey Midgets not at their best picked up a third In lb Although Georgetown Is not class Martin Pollack was third directly represented
