Rev Barrow notes a social problem What did you say Communications gap THE HERALD Wednesday May IMSPago Day Care Day in Halton Todays Day Care Day In Hie Association for Early Childhood Education has officially designated today citizens to see what Is going on care centres In the area Wednesday as a day for all In nursery schools and day Most centres to will Everyday every hour and every minute we com municate Yet we tend to neglect or Ignore these com munications The old saying Goes In one ear and out the other didnt originate as a compliment but as an insult Everyone slips Into bad habits Such as standing face to face with a friend looking directly at the person yet having to resort to come thing like I didnt hear that or Sorry I wasnt listening I These communication gaps I were topics covered by Reverend Peter Barrow minister of Knox Presbyterian Church and Georgetowns of the Year in a recent talk with women the Ys day- workshop entitled Tie Art of Communications When you listen you do pot pick up everything by any means Our concentration span Is not very long and we never concentrate at all times But we do manage to pick up a few things which were said commented Barrow He explained his of feedback from any audience he speaks to When people start to fidget and look up at the celling counting the number of bolts In the rafters then I know I am not getting through This feedback is split into two categories positive and negative Positive feedback Is when someone violently disagrees with what was said and states a direct question or controversial statement On the other hand negative la more of a sensed reaction better known as body language A speaker realizes by the fidgeting yawning whispering constant coughing and extensive rustling that bis audience Is suffering from flickering concentration thus not ab sorbing much of what Is being said Communication threads through a cycle consisting of the communication Itself the channel used the receiver and the feedback Its exactly the same process talking to a crowd of one hundred people as having a quiet chat with your husband in the living room However concentration neglect is only of the barriers which prevent people from complete comprehension and attention The greatest barrier of communications he said is the use of language The word oft for example has at least six different meanings and interpretations Because of the numerous translations of words our language falls Into oil kinds of traps said Rev Barrow To illustrate on example Rev Barrow related a true story which once happened to him when using a word Im properly I was paving a visit to a home and as I was leaving I said This Is a very pleasant homely house you have There was a look of shock and horror on the owners faces At that time I didnt realize the difference between homey and homely Another serious problem he related Is people tend to hear what Ihcy want to hear Rev Barrow then talked about a most common and frequent aggravation a mother faces Mother Come wash the pots Child What Mother Come wash the pots Child I cant hear you Mother I said come wash tho pots Child 111 be there In a minute Fifteen minutes
