Services present quarters on James Street will be temporarily shelved pending tbe results of a major study on municipal buildings in Georgetown that could see fire ambulance and work departments Involved in some municipal musical chairs Town council during a Monday evening committee of the whole meeting gave ten tative approval to a suggestion by Councillor Em Hyde that the town petition the Ontario Municipal Board for permission to Issue a maximum of in debentures to carry out a to atudy of the towns ambulance fire and works buildings in Georgetown phis possibly to purchase land for a new Hills municipal building suggestion came as council considered the towns capital works budget for the coming year Included In the budget were three projects for which debentures had been expected to be required Besides the addition to the GVAS am bulance service executives had hoped to get underway In the very near future- other two major expenditures were for a new aerial ladder truck for the Acton fire department and a study on the need and possible site for a future municipal building for Hills Town treasurer Harry Henderson recommended to council that the new fire truck be reconsidered because of difficulties experienced by the Milton fire department with a similar vehicle Because it directly affected the safety of residents Mr Henderson Stated that he felt the OMB would very likely approve tbe request for the ambulance building addition That left council with a decision on what to do with the proposed study of a new municipal building Councillor Hide told council that be felt that the money might better be spent on a total study aimed at shifting tbe various town departments to the best available si tee with the end result that money could be spent on adding to the works departments present building on the Seventh Line adjacent to the former township office Councillor Hyde suggested that the ambulance service instead of requiring an addition might be more easily shifted to the present location of the Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department at the corner of Chapel and The fire department be continued could then be moved to the works departments Maple Avenue building works depart ment In turn could be moved to expended central faculties on tbe Seventh Line As for a future site for a new municipal building Councillor Hyde recommended that tbe search for its location be contained In the guidelines for tbe comprehensive study vacated ambulance building be added could quite easily be sold as a residence providing money to be spent on the addition to tbe works departments facilities I cant see the of spending Jus t to find t we need acres to buUd a new municipal building Thla we can do ourselves and we can do it this year Councillor Harry Levy of finance committee said that it was possible that the noting tost study benefitted safety of Georgetowns residents would be more amenable to approving a of for a total plan that a on solely a new administration building He cautioned however that the study must be undertaken immediately If we do strike out on thla new tangent theres a matter of some urgency to The ambulance service requires ore room for ts operations How to get by on fixed income Seniors fight inflation By Deri Staff Reporter Inflation has hit us and It has hit us hard Each day news reports shout the rising fuel food housing la fact all the necessities of life No one needs to be reminded that gasoline jumped an incredible ten cents in June Newlywed couples single men and women a widow with three children a family with five children and a house to pay for the bluecollar worker the small town store owner tbe postman the mailman virtually everyone has been struck by that fateful bolt of Inflation and each and everyone has bad to learn to cope with the situation Coping might mean one less trip to the movies or one package of potato chips in stead of three or a walk to the nearby grocery store Instead of a drive or It even might mean taking on a second Job or working a double shift twice a week However how do those poeple cope who are already living on the bare necessities of life Thosewhohavenocholcetoworkornot to work Those who receive a limited government pension and an occasional bonus cheque We ore speaking of out senior citizens In a series of recent Interviews the Herald posed the question of inflation and the means of coping with the problem to a number of senior citizens In Georgetown Most are managing An elderly couple living in a basement apartment stated that they were quite con tent and able to live without too much worry on the monies they now receive from the government We find our double pension more than adequate I often wonder what the people would do if we didnt receive any money from the government It seems that some people always have to compalin about something Discussing the inflationary problem they stated In the post two years we have had to add at least 1 per month for our groceries But we cant offer any other solution because only the government can do something about It How do they cope Weil we eat sub stantial meals but we try to keep away from sweets as much as possible We dont go out spend a lot of money on dinners etc We Just spend our money wisely However tbe couple did feel that a single senior citizen living Independently does need on increase in pension money We do feel that there Is some Justification for single people to need more At a recent visit to Kin Court group of ladles explained their views on the We are getting along Just fine with the money we receive I think right now we are better off than we ever were However If we lived I don t think we could moke It We simply could not afford to pay rent these days The ladles agreed hat It was not o much the senior citizens who were being hit by inflation much as young married couple Its the young families with two or three children are Hit tbe hardest and feel the pinch the most Nowadays It almost im- for a young couple to save up enough money for a down payment for a bouse There was another area which the women agreed upon that of living alone I trtedu run my own house but I Jutt kept going under There came a time when I knew Icouldnotaffordltanymore people on their own really do have to scratch to pull through In fact general opinion expressed by the senior citizens spoken to was that they felt very lucky to be so well taken care of by the government If fortunate enough to live In a borne for senior citizens they have few money worries Perhaps tbey do not have vast amounts of money to put into a banking account however do nave enough to live fairly com fortably from day to day providing a sensible approach is taken to their money One woman showing her deep concern with inflationary problems summed up tbe feelings of many If we fight for more money from government It will be tbe young people wbo will be bit and tbey Just couldnt face that We should be
