The Georgetown Bantams soccer team downed Port 30 in Port Colborne last week to gain the right to advance Into the third round of against Port there was little to choose between team as both were playing well Port Colbome drew first blood on a Georgetown defensive but before time had run out In the hair Georgetown had tied the score In the second half Georgetown gradually took control of the contest They were constantly testing the mettle of the Port Colborne and it was no surprise when they finally got their second marker Malcom Evans found the target after a nice Georgetown passing Second round play in the Ontario Cup Major Atom division got underway last week as Georgetown ravelled to Armourdale a suburb of Toronto Innn attempt to keep their championship hopes alive They did Just that coming off pitch with a convincing 1 lead and the right to advance Into the third round Georgetown went on the offensive right from opening whistle Time and again thoy were in the penalty area harassing the goaler but Just seem to finish off their plays Armoitrdale began lo show signs of wilting under the pressure and it was obvious that it was only a question of time until Georgetown scored Georgetown took lead on what could only be described as a team effort Rose started the play up to Mark Waters Water sent the boll to Oram right wing and on the return pass Waters made no mistake with shot and sent it winging past the The opening goal of the game spurred Georgetown on even more and they had scoring chances galore fortunately over anxious play resulted In many missed but there was no question that the local tads complete control of the contest In fact Armourdale did not get the ball out of their half until over minutes of play had gone by Mark Waters picked up his second goal of the game to give Georgetown a lead and again a pretty passing combination made the counter possible The boll was moved up by tho halfbacks to inside left Rose He sent a nice pass over to Oram at right wing who worked his way up the side Three teams advance Ontario Cup play continues on the soccer scene and last week three Georgetown teams advanced Into the third round The Minor Mosquitoes Major Atoms and Bantams all had wins away from home while Minor Pee Wee s and a suffered defeats at home Maple Leafs of Toronto showed a better balanced more powerful team and downed the Georgetown Minor Pee Wees The Toronto team was a much bigger side than the locals and this played a large part In the Georgetown defeat The Georgetown B lost to Toronto Pauline Jets and although he local lads had ample opportunities to score the breaks just did not come their way Failure to capitalize on scoring chances and a few defensive lapses were the major factors In the Toronto team win Toronto Pauline Jets the defending Ontario champions are not as strong this year however they should remain one of the top contenders Tor championship honours before centring for Mark Waters to boot home Rose Clark and displayed excellent passing In the first half but were frustrated when the finishing touch was needed mourdale got lone tally of the game with Just minutes left In the half It was one of the few Armourdale forays Into the Georgetown end and perhaps Inaction made the Georgetown react slower as he was out of position when the goal was scored The teams left the pitch at ha If time with Georgetown leading 1 As it turned out there would be no scoring in the second half as played better soccer and the Georgetown lads seemed content with Ihelr one goal lead Wllh IS minutes left In the contest however Georgetown realised the potential danger of their defensive shell and once again took Howie Oram got the locals back In thick of things and his constant rushes left defenders breathless In his wake Wllh five minutes left In the game Georgetown was awarded a penalty shot but as had happened on numerous previous scoring chances the ball went wide of the mark The two stars of the game for Georgetown were Mark Waters for his two goals and Howie Oram for his hustling luadi up play Georgettes just behind county Softball had a brief break last week as the annual AllStar game look over centre stage Standings released by the league show three area teams for the coveted position of number one once again leads the pack but only slightly as the Georgetown Georgettes are only
