fruits of their efforts June and Barry both residents of Georgetown graduated first and second respectively from the Garden Centre Merchandising program at Sheridan College With the course successfully behind them their hardest choice now It seems la what to do with tbetr newly gained talent The options thanks to the wide curriculum of the Sheridan course are SILVER MEDAL Fraser graduated from the Garden Centre Mer program at Sheridan College not Board of Governors Silver Medal but also a lot of plans for the future With her Is Tom Crookston centre of who co ordinated the college program and Barry who placed second in the Intensive Mrs who lives on Street is trying to fit her newly discovered talents at gardening landscaping and Just plain growing flowers Into a future that also must Include ber growing family She noted that the Sheridan course under the supervision of co ordinator Tom Crookston of hat just opened the doors for a possible future In architectural landscape Considering that she topped the class of eight plus earned a Board of Governors Sliver Medal for achieving A in all segments of the course she is already well on the way to realizing some of her more Immediate goals Mrs noted that she would like to eventually offer a landscaping service that an ordinary homeowner looking far a way to add a new look to his property or a new house owner wanting to do something with a bare lawn can not only afford but can also take his time doing The larger nurseries offer a service she said that tends to be too expensive and also often Is just too ambitious for an ordinary homeowner to tackle I would tike to see a service in which a homeowner wanting a change can come be told what could be done for a slight fee of then do the work himself over a number of years A little bit this year a bit the next year She would eventually like to set up Just such a service but that will have to take Its place behind other more immediate goals such as raising a family and perhaps taking a further course at Barry a resident of Moul trey Crescent is mixing a bit of business with a bit of learning at the moment The young graduate of the Garden Centre Merchandising program Is already making some use of his talents He a now working at Farms but expects to even tually move on to for a ore detailed four year course on growing and nurturing plants The Sheridan course he added provided a great chance to gain practical ex while at the same time seeing whether be was really Interested In the field of horticulture The course under the complete guidance of Mr Crookston a well respected Instructor in the field does Just that The program provides study on all aspects of the garden centre Industry Some Instruction covers the retailing side of the nursery industry from merchandising and salesmanship to the operation of a cash register Students are also required to learn plant characteristics pest recognition and control and soil properties As students acquire more knowledge from the basics of this program their special skills will be readily tran sferable throughout the area This program functions on a cooperative basis with garden centres and nurseries in the TorontoHamilton area The program comprises hours per week of Instruction from Monday to Thursday The program curriculum Includes garden centre merchandising plant characteristics and recognition plant diseases and pests soil chemistry human relations merchandising and salesmanship oral com munlcations and retail mathematics It a a 20week course offered through Sheridan
