Theres life in the Terra Cotta clay THE HERALD Wednesday July II 1915 Paget Local artist goesi primitive It all started with an ad appearing in the Georgetown Herald Just five years ago For sale one potters kick wheel Excellent condition When you have always wanted to be a potter doesnt take much That ad was all it took to Influence Agnes Olive to buy the wheel Now Mrs Olive la one of the beat potters and artists In clay It was something I had always wanted to do but like so many I hadnt got around to doinganythlngsboutlt Mrs Olive has earned a well- deserved reputation as one of the areas leading potters but does not classify herself as such Im not a production terabeexplalned 1 work in clay sometimes on the wheel but many times lust shaping the pieces with my hands from the earth It Is evident that Mrs Olive pays attention to shape and form In all her pieces from the most ornate to the primitive series she la now working on Primitive work Is exactly as the name grass roots potting using fingers sticks and stones to work with he clay No modem conveniences such as electric or gas Ulna are used When doing primitive pieces I work outside things that I have found around the yard or from the ountryslde such as sticks and bones Mrs Olive also uses fossils to create further primitive design Impressions on the clay surface before firing it In pits fed by fires of wood and cow dung I often use clay that I get from the area furthered the artist Recently Mrs Olive at tended a class on primitive potting The class as a final outing came to Terra Cotta to gather clay for tbeir works Before the clay can be- used It must be tested under various conditions before any wor thwhile product can be made Mrs Olive discovered that the Terra Cotta clay has a high limestone content that has to be screened out before the clay can be moulded When water was added to the clay pot made with the limestone In It the pot would dissolve But removing the stone makes It just as usable as any other clay According to Mrs Olive day it alive You cant make it do what It doesnt want to do Each clay has Its own characteristics and the potter must leam how to use those to achieve the effect he wants Controlling the amount of In the kiln when firing the pieces affects he finished colour of the work it will retain the natural colour of the raw or take on an entirely new tint Is determined in the firing process 1 use less and less glares on my work Form Is becoming the most important con sideration when I make a piece Inspiration for the many works done by Mrs Olive comes from the natural surrounding of her wooded home and long walks along the unused railway tracks that go through village of Terra Sometimes we walk over eight miles along the track and bring back all kinds of ideas and materials to use to make things added Mrs Olive The best advice Mrs Olive con give Is simply do it for those who have always wanted to do something creative Dont try and copy anyone else be yourself Mrs recommends Joining groups of other people that share the Interests to pool resources Art Is a do it yourself medium that everyone can enjoy Carnegie awards presented The Dale
