be described as a case of too little too late On Thursday night before an enthusiastic home crowd of about Ram fans the Hills crew dumped leagueleading Mlssissaugo Medics 12 The Rams travelled to on Saturday night but dropped a 1210 decision and herein lies their dllemna The last place team in league standings Is eliminated from playoff ploy and with two games remaining in their regular schedule the Rams are four points behind sixth place Owen Sound Satellites Owen Sound has but one game remaining but even if they lose that Mlsslssauga and the win their final two games It Is still up In the air as to whether he Rams will gain Ihe playoffs The formula then to be used is goals for and divided by goals for and either team could gain the coveted position A Satellite win or a Ram loss would make all this academic but Ram management must be looking back In anguish at some of the Ram losses that occurred in Ihe dying minutes of earlier season play Since return to Acton the Rams have played fine lacrosse Prior to Thursday night s big win over Mlsslssauga the flams had knocked off Owen Sound and manager Howard credited the Acton fan support for much of the team resurgence The fans here arc tremendous he said When you consider that we left them for Georgetown and then returned somewhat down their support has been amazing Their en thuslasm has meant at least two or three goals for us Thursday night tussle with epitomized the rebirth of the Rams The fans were cheering throughout the contest and the Rams responded wilh heads up plnymaklng defensive tactics and a remarkable lack of penalty minutes As witness the Rams Impressive defense Mlsslssauga was called five or six times for falling to get a shot on net within the second time limit In the penalty department he Rams picked up minutes to minutes the majority of the Rams penalties were what could be termed good infractions There was llltlo retaliation on flagrant Medic fouls and this In turn did not allow the Mlsslssauga crew a chance to fully employ their potent The Kama led throughout the contest and proved their staying power by withstanding a Medic In the last few minutes At the end or the first frame the score Turkosz is living up to his previous billing as the best goal tender In Junior hockey The 12 loss to was a bit of for he Rams as they played well enough to win leading after two periods but let down on a strong performance between the pipes for the Rams Wednesday night the Rams travel to then on Thursday night play their final regular season contest the Ac on Arena Regardless of he outcome against it would be nice to see a large crowd for he Rams final home game a disappointing first half of the season the Rams have come on strong and deserve be applauded for their efforts League lead of he County Softball League visited Georgetown last Tuesday and the resultant clash with the urned into a wild affair that could only be described as a coach nightmare The needed a win solidify their chances of a playoff berth and was of course hoping to enhance their image as a first place team The battle royal emerged saw 31 runs scored errors committed When the smoke from the Tray cleared he displaying more staying power had a 14 win and quite possibly wo coaches reaching for tranquilizers The tone of contest was set early as picked up a run in the first Inning on a hit batter and one hit then pushed across six runs in the second inning via two hits a walk and three errors The nibbled at he Alderwood lead in the bottom of the second they picked up single run on two hits and an error continued to abuse novelette starter Laura Wilkes in the lop of he bird as they scored two more runs on one hit one Royalette error and two walked bailers and appeared well on their way to blowing he local nine off he eld In all fairness to Laura It was obvious from the start that she was not in top form and she should have been lifted as early as he second inning She remained on the mound and to her credit kept throwing hard At the end of two and one half Innings he score stood at 1 Alderwood but he were not yet ready to roll over and play dead as they showed by pushing across two runs in heir half to the third to marginally narrow he gap to 3 Lea tine Gilson reached base on an error then advanced second on Betty Marchmenl s sacrifice Butler walked and that set he stage for a neat bit of coaching strategy on the part of Ted Wilkes and Jack Handy Wilh Charlie Milton at bat a double steal was attempted The surprised Alderwood catcher threw wild in attempting to get at third then the compounded he error by making a poor return throw Leo scored an the double mistake and who had advanced third on the prcv play came in with the second run when Potti grounded to second The fourth their turn at the plate in the filth but heir cause seemed doomed to failure pitcher Gagne had only yielded two hits to this point and seemed to be getting stronger She had set the down in order in the fourth the lost only out by way of a strikeout and looked very confident as she toed the rubber Her confidence as well as her team lead evaporated rather suddenly as the pounded out live hits scored eight runs and amazingly pulled themselves back into contention Barb Curry replaced Laura Wilkes on the mound for the In the sixth inning and raised questions as to why she hadn l been brought in earlier as she retired the batters without yielding a run The on field interlude did nothing to douse the forest fire that had sprung up in the bat rack in he fifth Inning and slicks were smoking again for the local crew as they paraded to the plate In sixth Three hits two errors and a walk saw he score six runs and jump into the lead for the first time In the game The fireworks t completely over however as Alderwood donned the melgn of the Comeback Kids In their last at bat in the seventh Yvonne Wood walked to start the inning She scored on Carol Jennings double and Jennings crossed the plate on Carolyn s double There were two runs In with but one out and a runner In scoring position Since the had exploded for a bushel of runs there was no doubt in anyone hat it could happen again catcher Brenda Smith settled he issue however and cased some stomachs when she picked off an Alderwood runner on an attempted steal of third The pressure was off and Butler ended the game with a fine running catch in left field to give the he 14 win To purists the game might have been a bit disappointing But from he standpoint of excitement generated In the stands was a highly en joy able game The had knocked off ihe league leaders broken Iheir string and rediscovered their hitting prowess From a local angle there was nothing more to be asked Debbie Hamilton was the hitting heroine for the as she went three for four and collected RBI s Betty Mnrchment also went for four and knocked in two runs Barb Curry was hreefor four and contributed one RBI For Ihe player of the game was Marg Cloy ton
