Lr I THE HERALD AogiutB IKS Page J Into Central Division playoffs Rams make it by skin of their goals against In the sports world there are cliches and adages that propria describe Just about any situation a team or in i dividual may get into At this point in time in regards to the Halton Hills Rams the one that comes to mind is When the going gets tough the tough gets going As the last week of regular season play rolled around the Rams were figuratively speaking behind the Eight Ball In the Central Division of the Ontario Lacrosse the playoff format had six of the seven league ti quillfying for post season play The Rams chances of making the playoffs were optimistically slim The Rams hod two gomes left and were four paints behind sixth place Sound Satellites To further diminish Rums already playoff ray of light Owen Sound hud still another game kit in the schedule This meant that the Rams had to win their final two outings and th it Owen Sound would have lose their Even then Ontario Outdoors Time running out AUGUST already Another five weeks and Ihe Trout season will close in the Inland areas of southern Ontario I don want to be a pessimist but now is a good time to get ready for the hunting season I know there is lot of fishing left to do and to take full it but I am also going to be ready for the hunting this fall I recently acquired anew Winchester model 1400 MK11 with vent rib and This fine shotgun tins feel of that I like and believe it will improve my shooting this however the Rams could as they would be tied In points with Owen Sound and a goals for and igainst for could possibly come up with an that would benefit the Sounders The ennno pliyed out to the final curtain and lo ind behold the local found themselves making the playoffs The final scenes in this sports drama unfolded in this manner The Rams travelled to last Wednesday and came off the floor 13 winners However is in most dramas the Rams were reluctant to case tension and let their supporters off easily ThosccrcwaEticdll 11 at the end of regulation time and both teams seemed quite capable or snatching defeat from the jaws of victory This turned out to be a moot point however as the Rams turned on the after burners and outscored in overtime to take the win After this physically and emotionally draining ex pcrlencc th Rams faced yet another trial on as they faced at home had to force another victory for a playoff Owen Sound wis playing in on the same night and the issue would be settled one wny or before another day passed The Rams completely dominated Thursday game 1910 but us wire hugging and congratulating each other on their victory the PA system suddenly burst to lif In mechanical tones the an wis made that had Owen Sound 1913 and that the Hilton Hills Rams were in the playoffs Needless to say the Rams jay jumped to a higher A story book finish Unquestionably However in the athletic sense quite an achievement for a team that had been written off just a short ago To make the playoffs the Rams won three of their last four games played under considerable criticism and pressure came through when the chips were down and only their on floor play would spell defeat or Their gutsy per the list two weeks will surely fain licrosso adherents m area The Rams hero if any one player be singled out In Wednesdays imt against was Paul Wilson As the third period got tin derwny the Rims were down and hod been shutout in the second period Wilson scored twice in less than minute to the score then scored tv more goals in the third period to issure a tie in regulation Wilson it so picked up a single tally in the opening frame Hun the Rams leading scorer notched a hat trick Bill Fox and Young each scored twice while singles went to Jim Kevin Mar George Artcm Steve Wilson and Bruce Cooksley Cooksley four assists Bo w his lone mirkcr for five point performance In the must game in Acton on Thursday night the Rams possibly ml ring that it might be their last performinec In front of their vociferous and extremely fins blew out of the muggy irena and into the cooler night to the tune of 1910 Hunt villi never got closer than five Roils of the ms although they carried ploy for the litter part of the second period and were clearly outplayed and for the balance of the game At the end of the first period the Rams led carried a 126 Itad through two periods and then out red the humbled In the final minutes to record the 1910 win Ron Turkosz ind Bruce Cooksley of the Rams did the most damage is they each potted five golls Cooksley added three assists for a fine tight pa night Steve Wilson who is turning into a deadly sniper or late his four gools with four assists for yet another eight point performance Single goal scorers included Young J m Chi holm Glen Sherman Bill Fox and Wilson A note of dismay crept into the otherwise jubilant post game proceedings when it is learned that Bruce Green will be lost to the team for the remainder of the Green a solid defensive player suffered lorn ligaments in his foot on an innocint play He was in motion when the referee caused him to come to in stop He will be missed in postseason play The seriousness of the injury came about because of Green sheer dettrmimtlon to win He continued to play for the better part of the third period even though it was obvious to all that he wis in same difficulty and no doubt aggravated the damage The injury in Green case is especially untimely as it is his last year in Junior lacrosse and he was hoping by his playoff performance to impress big league scouts In their opening game with in the best three quarterfinals the Rams will also be without the services of Kent The En forcer who is currently out a four game suspension as result overly rambunctious play and it is expected that the forward contingent will be ruided for the sixth rearguard Kentncr will sec action in the second gare of the series No that the tumultuous happenings of the post two weeks are Ram coach RobPoole that the team has finally found Its level As he stood outside the team door after Thursday night win obviously just as exhausted as his players he comment We make it to the finals aid I don believe we lose another game along the way A rough season and a long for the team and their coach but everyone is looking for better things to come as the playoffs get lai dcrway This weeks pic Thecholceofgaugeln a shotgun has more to come I chose a 12 gauge for its round versatility and the ability to reach out for those long shots high flying ducks and the Winchoke to open up or grouse etc An extremely well made gun and the price is right The auto loading feature for those of us who wont to get off the fast second shot when we miss with the first one asistooofton thecase is a great feature 1 intend to take the piece out for a few S practice rounds to get the feel of it In action and get to know it now not when it is too late and the season is upon say it now or don say It at all and that could be final Let hear from you It really is your Ontario Outdoor Colin Gibson Sports Both the Georgetown Georgettes of the Ladies Softball League and the Georgetown of the Juvenile Division of the County Girls Softball Association have their ardent fans who will swear up and down that their team Is the best female fastball team in town The age difference really matter what counts is the calibre of ball and both teams by their play this season could quite possibly have the inside track on the town title The had a fine season and begin their provincial playdowns shortly while the Georgettes although they dldn t finish as high in the league standings as the Royalettes had an equally satisfying season and with their improved play of late must be considered serious challengers for league championship laurels The dilemma could really only be solved by a challenge match between the two clubs and as both were in a quiet period in their respective seasons just such a gome was played lost Tuesday evening The game ended In 1010 tie and despite the of the two teams partisan fans about the exploits of the particular heroines the fact remains that Georgetown is indeed for tunate in having two such competitive and talented female fastball clubs for spectator perusal In Tuesday exhibition contest it appeared that the were out of the running In the early going The Juvenile Girls had counted three runs in their opening inning but by the end of three full innings found themselves on the deficit side of a scon The hove never been known a team to concede defeat until final out has been registered and this stubborn night rallied for seven runs in their half of the fourth to take a At this point Georgettes must have been mumbling something like fun is fun but let s not get carried away and promptly pushed acres three runs in their half of the fifth to knot the score at HMO The final two innings were scoreless but in deference to the talent on both squads this really was Indicative of how the game was ployed Neither team really played well enough to win but neither did either club deserve to be hung with the loss Far now all arguments regarding the merits of both clubs hove been partially laid to rest but quite a few fastball fans in the town would like to see the Georgettes and the go at it on a passible threeout of five for seven scries basis and this would undoubtedly attract a good crowd The possibilities arc however there for such a match and It would without a doubt cause quite a stir In fastball circles Tor some time lo come The utilized all three of their pitchers in Tuesday night game Laura Wilkes Betty Mnrchmcnt and Barb Curry all saw mound duty Metier went the distance for the Georgettes In the hitting department for the Char 1 en Milton was two for three including a triple Betty Marchment went two for two while Leanne had a two forlhrce night For the Georgettes Walsh went two for five but it was her triple with the bases loaded In the fifth inning that tied the game The Royalettes will open their provincial playdowns when they host St Catharines this Sunday afternoon Game time is 1 at Softball diamond In the fairgrounds The gained a bye through the first round of as the team they were scheduled to meet withdrew from the league The Ho Jo Cits from St Catharines on the other had to defeat Grantham to gain entry to the quarter finals The final scries against St Catharines will be a best two games out of three with the winner advancing into semi final play against the winner of
