exhibition game has been scheduled between he National Hockey League Referees and Linesmen and a combined team of the Hornby Ladies and the Hal ton County Ladies Softball League All Stars It promises to be quite a n of entertainment as opart from the fact that the referees and linesmen will be operating on a somewhat alien surface their grab bag of stunts and secret weapons ore bound to amuse all and might even elicit a warninR from NHL President Campbell regarding off lee conducts Regardless of whot happens Thursday it nil in fun and for a good cause By the way so as not to throughly demoralize the NHL officials it asked that those fans in attendance refrain from cheering the black and white stripers They re not accustomed to it and cheering or clapping might the officials to take themselves seriously This would be the he sublime as anyone who has witnessed their on Ice antics during hockey would The idea of forming a soft ball team composed of NHL Referees and Linesmen came up during the 196970 hockey season Pat Shctler and several other officials had talked about organizing such a team to the fellows together during the offseason and also to assure that they kept In reasonable shape during the summer months Subsequently the entire of hauling staff received a draft notice and the team was born Some of the original team Included Bruce Fly Ball Hood John Bleachers D Amlco John Bobble McCauley Ron Wicks and Bob 1 want It Myers Over the years the team was besieged with so many requests for exhibition games that restriction was placed on the number of games they would play The only stipulation being that all money collected must go to charity During the past six summers the have raised close to for various charities such as the Lions Childrcns Arena in Windsor Shrincrs work with crippled children the Mentally Retarded Association a Home For Children in Hamilton and many others Their games have taken them to Windsor the Walton Hockey Camp near Orlllia Camp Borden Toronto and the Canadian National Exhibition and many small towns too numerous to mention In their travels the officials have played senior teams Industrial league teams reform school Inmates service clubs and practically any imaginable nine that took to the field friary Curtis Night will however be a first as the zebra boys have yet to do on field battle with a ladles Hobos at the Canadian National Exhibition For Thursday night contest the have been holding secret workouts even the press was barred Ac the bar was just a few doors down from the workout and given the choice members of the press opted for the more liquid choice But a few of their secret weapons have been discovered The ladies may be forced to use a bat weighing 15 pounds or run in a pair of Bauer ball spikes size eighteen All these in novations are of course subject to the umpire s op proval If the umpire doesn t approve chances ore he will be asked to view the officials Having looked at this particular there is no doubt In this writer mind that whatever the officials pull off figuratively speaking of course it will meet with the umpire approval The officials bring Ctalknpe Trophy to 11 1 ball and keep Lewis John Leon their garni just lo that the totally off the Stickle e the r mentions in sir Bruce Gurside Bob Hodges Ron Hogarth Swede Knox The trophy is however As of this writing the Randy M tton Bob Myers presented to the losers and if following officials have in Terry Pierce Andy van the NHLerfs opponents want that they will par Hcllcmond and Ron Wicks the trophy they usually in Thursday night do then of course they must game They include In a special was noted that Instant rcpUy screens will not be allowed it It is the screen would help s are for missing the play the first I me around and instant replay would only compound their stokes Pace Brotherton combine to win doubles tennis crown The Georgetown Tennis Club held its annual Men Doubles Championship this past Saturday the play but the ball arrived a fraction too the semifinal gome between PerksCurwood late Taurus beat and and Taurus in the advanced to the finals where they lost out to Intermediate Men League Lanark Astros I 3 Local teams fall in Bramalea tournament The first annual Intermediate Mens Fastball League was held this past weekend in and the Georgetown Industrial Fastball League had two representatives entered Glen Williams who are currently in first place In the industrial league made up one entry while Curwood and Perks combined their talents to make up the second local entry The tournament was a two- day double knockout affair which saw 16 teams entered including several entries from the Toronto area The Glen team won their first game over Hart Lakers from Bramalea but were eliminated from further competition when they dropped their second contest to Taurus Steakhouse of Team members on the Glen crew Included Jeff Haines Armstrong Jack Bergman Glenn Stcvo McMillan Clint Peacock Wayne Held Jim Robertson Ross Hlllier Jock Fisher Bill Campbell John Ken Glen Cooper Ray See Kim Crawford Bob Goldsmith and Tom James In their opening contest the Glen did all their damage In the first inning then the strong arm of Jeff Haines to hold off Hart Lakers and take the win Fisher and Campbell scored runs for the Glen With the prospect of possible semifinal play looming large Jeff Haines was held back and Ray See started on mound against Taurus Several errors and some good hitting by Taurus allowed them to Jump ahead by several runs before Haines came on in relief The Glen did rally far three runs in the final two Innings but it was a case of too little too late as Taurus held off for the win Georgetown second entry the combined team of Perks and Curwood advanced to semi final play before being eliminated again by Taurus- but it was a mere one Inning of ploy that spelled the difference between defeat and a berth In the finals Perks defeated Merchants In their open tog contest but the score is not really Indicative of the play as the locals were clearly the superior team The pitcher appeared to be surviving more on luck than pitching skill and had the Georgetown bats been more effective the Orangeville y would have been blown off he field For Perks In this first game Mike went forthree Wayne McNlvcn was Iwofortwo at the plate while Bob and Wayne Farrow each hit two for four McNiven was credited with the win but needed relief help from Joey Deforest to the latter stages of the game Curwood s second outing had team finding Ihe rare combination of pitching hitting and fielding as they bombed Raiders of and advanced to the semi finals The game was called after six innings as time had run out but the shell shocked Raiders appeared just as pleased as the Georgetown team at the decision to call a halt to the debacle Wayne McNiven started the game but was relieved by Joe Deforest In the first inning Although Deforest threw the balance of the game McNiven was credited with the win Ray Peacock had the beat plate performance as he hod a perfect game going four with three singles and a double Bob Fendley hit three- forfour two singles and a double while Steve Graham hit three for five The semi final had doing battle with Taurus and had it not been for a letdown In the final frame the local squad would have found themselves vying for the tournament championship Going into the bottom of the seventh Perk held a 32 lead However a single a walk and two bloop Infield hits later had them leaving the diamond on the deficit end of a score The hitting prowess so prevalent in 17- win over Ztebart failed to materialize for Perks Curwood in semifinal and this more than any other factor brought about the loss The locals could manage only six hits and left six base runners stranded Joe Deforest who went the route was charged with loss The team included Joe Deforest Wayne McNiven Bob Fendley Steve Graham Mike Wayne Mike Tost Mike McCandless Ray Peacock John Reynolds Ron Osborne Wayne Farrow Colin Gibson Doug Bamea Nelson Barber Ray and Steve Kelr John Blair and B1U Richardson handled the coaching duties The tournament was won by a Toronto team Lanark Astros who defeated Taurus Steakhouse to claim the crown The Consolation Championship went to Samuel Steele ra of Brampton They defeated Sammy of in the secondtier division championship game The HaltonHWs Rams sixth place finishers in the Junior C Central Division season standings added yet another chapter to their amazing late season Cin derella Story as they knocked off fourth place Stingers on Saturday night In Acton to their quarter final best three out of five series three games to one thus advancing to semi final play Their late season surge which carried them to the playoffs has already been well chronicled but It was thought by many even ardent Ram fans that that would be the final ward on the Rams this year as they prepared to face the tough Stingers The Rams were confident even cocky regarding their chances against Orangeville and their assuredness proved more than just talk they won the first two games of the series 1612 The wrapup of the scries could have come last Wed night in but several factors combined to go against the Rams and left the floor 15fl winners Orangeville had their pride at stake and in front of their hometown fans ployed their best game of the scries to that point to gain the vie The Ram on the other hand were a bit flat as teams were wont to be when they ore up two games in a short series and a pregame injury to their outstanding Gory Turkosz injured in worm upmost assuredly did not put the Rams in the proper frame of mind for the game The Stingers scored three times in approximately two minutes to open the game as Turkosi still showed some ill effects from his injury and never looked back Orangeville lead the end of the first period 7 at the end of minutes play then the Rams In the final frame to salt away the win It was an off night for the Hills crew but as Howard Dwycr earn managernoted timingwise it have come at a better time Steve Wilson and Paul Wilson each had a pair of goals In the toss while singles went to Jim Chisholm and Kevin Marcoux Saturday night game was a must contest for the Rams as a defeat would send them back to for the deciding series dash and a win would give them a bit of a breather before continuing with postseason play The slight slump In their previous game dissipated and was replaced by the Rams winning form found themselves ousted from the playoffs in the face of a 157 Rams victory It was a sweet win for the Rams as their gomes throughout the year against Orangeville have proved to be bitter encounters with little love lost between the combatants Saturday a game appeared to be Wednesday night tussle on the flip side of coin aa the Rams took command early and exerted pressure throughout the game This strategy completely stymied the Stingers snipers and with Ram Gary final outcome The Rams led after the initial minutes after two periods then broke the Stingers hearts by them 51 in the final period to take tho sntslfylng win Rams leading scorer and the league ninth place scorer Ron TUrkosz paced the local attack by potting five goals and counting two assists Bruce and George Artem had a pair of goals while singles went to Wayne Young Jim Kevin Bill Fox Steve Wilson and Paul Wilson Ian Duff showed plenty of in testJnal fortitude as he played with a broken nose yet proved effective and added two assists to the team s totals Because of on OLA ruling that states that the finals in The Rams now advance to semi final play against and although the area managed only one win against to regular league play no one Is betting against them to once again come up with a superlative effort Junior play must get underway by a certain date he Ram semi final against Rexdalc have been limited to the best twoout of three games The Rams played in on Tuesday evening They play at home in Acton on Thursday and will Journey to Friday evening If a third gome Is necessary Ho Jo Cats collared easily by Royalettes Need only 2 wins to clinch Tilt and Miller toss Merchants to 2nd Two excellent pitching performances by two Georgetown Merchants hurlers carried the red and white crew Into sole possession of second place in the Halton County Mens Fastball League With Glen Williams breathing down their necks in the battle for third place the Merchants knew that lost Friday and last Sunday games could possibly decide their fate in the standings On Friday BUI Tilt threw a twohitter at Palermo for a Merchants win while on Sunday young Steve Miller tossed a sparkling three hitter against to notch another Merchants win this time by a count The twin wins guarantee the Merchants a playoff and with four games stilltoplay theMerchantswouIdonlynecdto win two more games to lock up third place honours On Friday night Bill Tilt allowed only five Palermo players to reach base two on hits two by way of errors and one on a free pass but even then there was no real threat as no Palermo runner advanced past second base Tilt also recorded five strikeouts to the win The Merchants were fortunate that Tilt held a hot hand as they managed only seven hits off Palermo John lug chart but the hits came when they were needed most and this Is what really counts Bill Tilt again contributed at the plate as he and rightflelder Barry Cuthbcrt went four at the plate for a 500 evening Bob Marchand rapped a triple and John Blair stroked a double Catcher had a night Sunday contest almost dldn t get off the ground as it appeared that the Merchants might not have enough players Young Rick Gourllc who plays Midget baseball and Mike who plays Juvenile baseball and also performs In Georgetown Industrial loop were to the field but saw only bench action as John Boyd arrived shortly before game time The game itself could have been termed Steve Miller Night as Miller tossed a three hitter picked up four strikeouts went three- at the plate scored two runs and stole a base It most most certainly was a case of a pitcher winning his own ball game Miller was tagged for a single in the opening frame then set down 12 Oakville batters in a row before Issuing a walk In the sixth Inning fie allowed a triple in the seventh and a single in the final frame but otherwise completely controlled the game Going into the seventh the Merchants held a lead saw it narrowed to one run then perhaps because of Oakville audacity struck for three runs of their own in their half of the seventh to give Miller the lead he was not to relinquish Phil Dobbin drove in two runs and although he was only at the plate hit with authority three of his were long balls hit to the left fielder The other top batsman for the Merchants was John Boyd who went twoforfour and knocked in a run The Merchants next game is slated for Friday night in Hornby and that will leave with three remaining postponed games ploy As yet no arrangements have been made for the playing of those games There was good news and slightly bad news Tor Georgetown Royalettes Juvenile Girls fastball team at they continued in provincial over the weekend to search of that elusive provincial crown The good news the received came via their own efforts as they dumped St Catharines Ho Jo Cats 110 on Sunday to take the best three quarterfinal series two games straight The bad news came via the grapevine as it was learned that had defeated Shakespeare on Sunday night to win their quarter final series and thus advance to the semi finals against the hometown holds down first place three points over in regulnr season competition which has been suspended until the completion of provincial play In meetings during the regular season between the two clubs the have edge winning three times to Alderwood a once but this record is somewhat deceiving All four games could con have gone either way end In fact in two of wins the locals had to come from behind to claim the victory Needless to say neither Ted Wilkes or Jack Handy coach and manager of the will be taking upcoming series lightly and consistent play will most likely spell the difference between the two clubs In the hitting and pitching departments both teams are fairly equal Therefore the club that ad vances to the finals will likely be the club that makes the fewer mistakes The scries Is a best twooutof three affair and mistakes can not only be said be cosily but almost Irreparable The first game of the semi night has not been set for the Georgetown confrontation For further Information regarding the Georgetown dale it is advised lo contact Ted Wilkes at B77W23 The had trounced St Catharines in their Initial encounter and Sunday game did not vary from pattern The were clearly the better learn and once they started rolling it was only a question of how wide the final margin would be The Royalettes scoring machine got into gear In the third inning with the ex of the fifth inning scored least one run an inning for the balance of the game The Royalettes picked up four runs in the third frame four in the fourth single run in the one run in the seventh and yet another single counter in their last at bat in eighth In a game so completely dominated by one team in dividual stars are often hard to single out While It was a team effort Barb Curry pitched well In recording the win plate power was provided by Brcnda Smith who went four and Charlene Milton who hit three for five Charlene has proved the most consistent hitter over the season and she continues to amaze with her power hitting ability Sunday game were long balls for extra bases Bantams easy time in final stretch Skaters in competitions Georgetown Bantam baseball team picked up four points this week keep a light Face going with Mlsslssauga for third spot In County standings Thursday was a gift as Streetsville defaulted two points when they could not put a team together for the game Saturday Georgetown visited and came away with a convincing 154 win Dcltlo and Davis split the pitching duties while at the plate was five for five wllh four singles and a double Karolidis was two for five wllh a single and a triple ond Power hit the second home run of the year for the Ban tarns Next game is Wednesday at home against Misslisauga This should determine who Is in third place as this is lost scheduled game before the playoffs on Sat 16 of August in Brampton The annual Summer Free Skating Competitions will be held at Hylands Ice
