THE HERALD Wednesday October Pajtet Beat Brampton 54 Geminis open season with win Georgetown burst onto the Central Ontario Junior scene with a vengeance this past Saturday as they defeated Brampton In their first ever league home Brampton had been touted In polls possible pennant contenders they made the league playoffs last year and ap peared strong in exhibition games leading up to day a contest The showed little respect for either the pollsters OT the more established club and in fact appeared at least four goals better than the team A slight Gemini letdown in the second period combined with a rash of local sin bin time In the middle frame allowed Brampton to come back and thus the score was much closer than actual on ice performance The most impressive line for the Geminis in their home- opener was that of Craig Fleming Steve Buchanan and Dave Chapman while the defensive corps of Kent Larry Peterson Scott Richardson and Paul Allison who had been sent down to the Juvenile ranks for more seasoning but was brought up to replace Bill the gome an exhibition fracas all deserve praise for a stalwart performance Gemini cod Paul Robinson although naturally pleased with his novice team Initial win qualified his praise by noting that be felt his charges were capable of playing a belter brand of hockey and expressed disappointment In the Brampton showing Robinson had expected more of fmm Brampton and la confidentusing the excellent game with the Junior A Windsor Spitfires as an examplethat his club will rise Paulfeelathatbecauseof as he termed It his club s superior conditioning tbe opening win should be token as oheraldlng of things to coma rather than a fluke and likewise is confident that Georgetown Is capable of beating any team In the Central league Tbe first official Gemini regular season goal was scored by Doug Barnes from Rick Becker and Joe South at the mark of the opening frame and lees four minutes later Steve Buchanan raised roof of the Gordon Alcott Memorial arena as he con verted passes from Craig Fleming and Larry Peterson to give the Twin G a lead Lsrry Peterson from Rick Becker and Doug Barnes completed the Gemini first period scoring and the locals left Ice with what was felt to be a comfortable three goal lead As mentioned previously a rash of penalties eight minora in tbe second period blunted tbe Gemini offence In the second frame and Brampton wilhln the space of a little over two minutes from 10 mark to mark knotted the contest Scorina for Brampton were Paul Cook Hike Kranskoxon and Rosa Doug Barnes with his second goat of the night from Rick Becker at tbe 11 mark quickly gave the Green and White tbe lead and from this point the Geminis settled bock to a solid checking game and dominated for the rest of the contest Dave Chapman from Steve Buchanan and Craig Fleming stretched the Gemini lead to at the mark of the third frame and although Bramp ton Rob Young brought his team to within one goal of lead it can be safely said that witness the dominance of the Geminis they outshot the visitors and If not for many struck goalposts could easily have won by as many as four goals The Gemlnls played an exhibition game In Prestor- on Sunday and for local team tbe tilt against tbe Kitchener area club almost proved a disaster The Ice was In terrible shape and as for the Preston players perhaps the best that can be said Is thai they play a fine game of football and cheap shots highlighted this exhibition and by the third frame coach Paul Robinson was warning his charges to be on their toes and stay out of the The Geminis came away winners on a 94 count but In reality were fortunate to escape without serious injury to key players Scoring for Georgetown were Chsrlle Knoepfll with two while singles went to Bob Dave Chap man and Craig Fleming This coming Saturday the will truly have a chance to prove themselves as they go against last years league winner and provincial finalist Bladen Five members of tbe c team have relumed including Mark who potted goals last seuson Although Is not expected OnkvlUe will be as strong as they were last year as defending champions their pride will be at stake and as Is known pride can sometimes prove the difference in a tight gome Game time this Saturday is SO p m at the Gordon Memorial Arena Tbe winner of the Gemini draw for a Deluxe Gas Bar was Dennis Taylor of Waterdown The winning ticket was drawn by club president Pete at the end of the second period Dog days for Rebel football A BALL CARRIER is surrounded by Junior Rebel in his own end This was one of the few times that the Junior properly executed tackling techniques as ran roughshod over the to the tune of Llewellyn to Mexico Cllve of Georgetown quailled to represent Canada as a member of the wrestling contingent of the Canadian Pan American Games team this past weekend In Thunder Bay Ontario Cllve who has accrued countless honours in the sport of wrestling gained membership to the team by defeating Steve Mar sham of British Columbia in a three two matches to one Markham who wrestled with Cllve as a member of last year University of Western Ontario wrestling team Is current Canadian Champion in this weight class so his defeat is quite an accomplishment for the young man from Georgetown Both wrestlers are highly regarded and In terms of ability closely matched Cllve lost his first match on points but then rebounded to take the next two matches again by points and thereby won the Pan American wrestling berth Canadian Pan American team will be leaving for Mexico City the site of he games this coming Saturday and are expected to return in the latter port of the month Chrysler Raiders shaping up The Georgetown Chrysler Raiders are rapidly rounding Into shape for the upcoming OHA Intermediate A season According to many of tbe players who are attending tbe Raider camp It is one of the best they have taken part 1q and nothing but praise Is beard for the way rookie coach Junior Tibbetts is handling the team The Raiders are allowed to carry 30 players up to January 10th when that number must be reduced to However the consensus of opinion la that no more than or players will be carried by tbe club To date five players have signed Raider cards Keith Pallet Tommy Gilbert Neil Cotton and John In eluding the five 22 players are currently at tending the Red and White practice sessions The Raider season at home will open Friday October when Fort Erie travels to Georgetown and the first Raider away game will take place Tuesday October again against Fort Erie In preparation for the up coming campaign the Raiders have scheduled two exhibition games with Oakvllie this Friday at so p at the Cordon Alcott Memorial Arena and back in Oakville Wednesday October Bib Georgetown District Minor Hockey Association GENERAL M Sunday Oct 5 1975 Cedarvale Community Centre Atoms in action Georgetown Major Atoms travelled to Chlnguacousy Sunday to play their first exhibition gome of tbe season against central team Two unanswered goals one by Sandy Watson another by Bobby Boucher both new players to this years team gave Georgetown an early lead Further goals by John Erie Clark and Maurice David with assists from Andrew Mike Stoned and Eric Clark gave Georgetown a solid victory over the higher assessed central team With three newcomers on this years squad tbe Major Atoms played good all round hockey Outstanding players in Sundays game were Sandy Watson Greg and Mark Snow The team lineup for Is Goal Derek Murphy Kevin Gillespie Defence Blake Harrison 1 Greg Mulr Asst Dave Jeff Moore Mark Snow Freddy Kendrlck Forwards Howie Oram Sandy Watson John Bobby Boucher An drew Eric Clark Mike Stone Maurice David and Duke Dog Days of Sep tember Is a term usually associated with baseball and refers to teams slumping near the end of a long drawn out season From this past week happenings In GDHS football circles it almost appears that this label has found a new and It might be added unwelcome borne Both tbe Junior and Senior Rebels were In action o use the term loosely this post week and both ore till longingly searching for their first win of tbe season Tbe Seniors played two games against on Tuesday and against Perdue on Friday while tbe Juniors hosted Blakelock and In 180 minutes of football the combined Junior and Senior efforts foiled to produce a point On Tuesday tbe Senior Rebels were trounced by a powerful Aldershot squad on Friday at home Juniors were by while in the Senior game at Perdue on Friday the local gridders lost a tough defensive battle to Panthers Tbe Senior record now stands at 03 while the Junior record Is now The same affliction plagued both the Senior and Junior Rebels in their lopsided losses that being failure properly execute football fundamental Poor or halfhearted tackling missed blocking assignments and respective offenses that could best be termed stuttering When Aldershot Journeyed to Georgetown lost Tuesday it was a known fact that they were a highly football machine In tbe Peel Helton region They had walked over Perdue Panthers but Senior coach Mike expected his charges would be better prepared to handle the Aldershot Juggernaut From the kickoff which returned for a touchdown It was obvious that tbe Rebs wen In for a rough afternoon Aldershot led at the half and duplicated this production hi the final minutes of play to record the win As coach noted The best thing to be remembered about his game la that It be forgotten Perhaps the whipping proved a valuable lesson to the Senior Rebs as the defense came up with a superlative performance on Friday In Perdue and left tbe field with beads held high despite a defeat Tbe Friday game was a defensive tussle from tbe opening whistle and It was a charged to offense that accounted for tbe Perdue major Feeble punt coverage allowed a Perdue return to the Rebels six yard line and tbe subsequent offtackle plunge went for a touchdown Host of the game was played at centre field between tbe yard lines and had GDHS offense been able to generate any kind of attack the locals could have recorded their first win Standouts for the Rebels on defense were Ron Oscar and Jim at the corner llnebacking position while BUI Allison had a fine game at defensive halfback With the defense rounding into form coach must now attempt to put some punch Into tbe offense Paul Allison has been handling the quarterbacklng chores for the list two games and although relatively Inexperienced at this position should be com forts bly settled when Seniors host this coming Friday afternoon If the defense can duplicate its performance of lost Friday and the offense manages to put some points on the board then tbe Senior should notch their first victory The Junior Rebel per in losing 440 to was enough to send even the mildest mannered of coaches up proverbial wall Blakelock scored at will against GDHS Juniors and the final play of the game aptly summed up tbelr efforts With only a few seconds remaining in the contest and ahead a halfback scurried Into tbe visitors offensive huddle with Instructions to merely ground tbe boll and run out the clock A was completed but the back much to his astonish ment found himself being completely Ignored by the Rebel defenders and promptly romped yards for a touch down Both Junior coaches Neil Cotton and eking were left almost speechless by their teams ineptitude and were at a loss to pinpoint the cause The Juniors had worked hard In preparation for the game but as sometimes happens to even the best of teams and as suggested by coach Leeklng perhaps they left their game on the practice field Blakelock led at the end of the first quarter 1M at half time and continued to in the final minutes scoring points to give them their winning margin only bright spat for the Juniors was the play of John and Craig McGllly John played well doing dual duty at offensive tackle and defensive end while Craig bad a fine game at defensive ball Tali Thursday the Juniors travel to Perdue and In the opinion of Coaches Cotton and should show that Fridays game was a mere flash In the pen and not a true Indication of the team capabilities Having seen the Juniors play well in a hard fought 156 opening game loss toOTHS this writer inclined to agree Tbe Juniors are capable of playing sound football and should prove this as their season progresses the raiders are a coming raiders Rebel volleyballers The Junior and Senior Rebels volleyball schedule Is nearly completed and at this point In tune there Is a possibility that the Seniors will make the East West A tournament while Juniors will be competing In East West tournament The set up to decide champions in Ontario High School volleyball Is somewhat complicated but basically the format Is worked out In this way The Junior and Senior Rebels play four matches against schools from East Helton After these four matches tbe top two teams in East and West compete In an A tournament while the remaining teams compete in a tournament The tournaments are spread over several dates at several schools and are round robin affairs Once the winner of tbe respective tournaments nave been decided the winner has the right to challenge the A winner and tbe sub sequent Champion advances Into Peel The eventual Peel Halton champion will represent this region In tournament scheduled for High School on November To tbe Senior Rebels have a 121 match record having defeated and while losing a second match to They played on Tuesday at the score was not available win could gain them a berth In A tournament the leagues number two finisher Should they find themselves relegated to the B tournament the chance is still there for a ch ampionship because of tbe league playoff formula Mike Reed Andy Long Doug Lam Paul Wolfenburg Don Gibson and on chor the teem as returnees from last year a squad while Doug Paul Nlchol Dave Richardson Mike Parsons Paul Mike and Gary Scully round out tbe teams roster Senior Rebel Coach Russ Llnney expects a great deal of success from this years crew and one of tbe reasons for high hopes is the Innovative offense that the team employs Most high school teams form on attack with two main spikers at the net but Llnney has introduced a multiple offence to the Rebels by utilizing three spikers With three spikers you have an extra attack position and can take more of an advantage of both loft and snort sets Similarly by using the centre front man as a rather than a setter you develop and quicker offense which in turn does not give the opposition much opportunity to form defensive positions Is pleased by the play of his team as a whole but singles out Captain Andy Long Doug Lamb and last year Junior Rebel Paul Nlchol as playing a large port in the team s success to date Junior Rebels sport a 13 record but with a team com posed mainly of newcomers who for the most part are Just being introduced to the in tricacles of volleyball are faring quite well Scott Tur ner Gerry Gale Norm Rod Gunpel and Derek Todd are tbe veterans while other team members include Rick Fisher John Kerolidls Terry Waldrum Brian Danny Fisher BUI Taylor MarkEuteneir Grady Ken Lonbro Mark Brabant Dave Mike Kevin Brown Joe Scott Kevin Neil and Dean SplttaU tournament sites and representatives will be straightened out this coming week but for now fans players and coaches alike must trust in the system and rest assured that things will eventually right themselves fJJWJJT BLADES SAT OCT No Gordon
