Valedictorian Kim Schenk addresses her classmates The Class of 75 THE PRINCIPAL AWARD went to valedictorian Kim who gave the best address In Mr Furlongs eight yean as principal of Georgetown District High School The annual Georgetown District High School com mencment was held last Friday before a packed auditorium filled with proud parents and friends who came to honour the Class of and to enjoy the presentation of diplomas and special awards to the largest graduating class yet Vice principal BUI Tome was the master of ceremonies for the evening with the awards presented by members of the Halton Board of Education the teaching staff and many special presenters Principal Michael J Furlong addressed the large crowd welcoming everyone to the eighth commencment that he has attended as principal of Valedictorian for was Kim Schenk who presented one of the best addresses that has graced the ceremonies in Mr Furlongs term I found It extremely to evaluate the role of valedictorian and therefore to order tnouohta for this evening explained the ner vous Miss It then occurred to mo that the confusion was not confined merely to the fact that I had been elected valedictorian and bad the duty of making a speech Rather this confusion is extended through most facets of my life at present as a graduate as a first year university student as an in dividual making new acquaintances while reluctant to relinquish those of the past I cannot believe that I am unique in this lam certain that ell of us are to some extent experiencing this disorientation I must emphasize this because it Is the experiences of the present which colour past shading them with more meaning now than hey had at the moment of their Any reminder of evaluation of ir years Inevitably subject to our attitudes as shaped by our Uvea at the present I should like to put our five years into some kind of per she said addressing the students and parents simple and easy like a neat giftwrapped present which we would look at and admire effortlessly But this ability at least for the present eludes Perhaps In five years or even ten years we will truly be able to assess the value of at Time has a way of obliterating both emotion and frustration leaving in memory only those experiences which truly contributed to our develop ment as individuals At present I think we all agree that high school In no way prepared us academically for the shock of the university work load Yet I not con that this did us an undue amount of harm The high school left us although we may not have realized or appreciated It a great deal of time for In with teachers and each other This is where I believe thetrue value of high school lies It Is not the acquisition of actual concrete knowledge the facta and figures which Is the primary benefit of our secondary education rather the increasing awareness of ourselves and others as In divl duals all rather special the of ourselves as such In this respect I conclude that our education here sue ceeded very well The dally association with our facing staff tbelr actual concern for us and our understanding may have at the time passed almost unnoticed but In retrospect they become mora and more obvious I am also thoroughly convinced of the of our year We possessed some very real spirit a great diversity of people abilities and personalities and tremendous amount of energy from which both we and the school benefitted The culmination of all this was naturally In Grade which we probably all reolixe was a very together year We saw disruption of existing cliques it became possible to speak with virtually anyone There were a great many malefemale friendships formed We kidded and Joked with far more freedom than previously experienced This clearly Illustrates the disintegration of preconceived roles which hamper so many of our dealing with others The sports jocks and the Intellectuals were all equally approachable and socially we gained a to each other that I believe to be truly unusual and therefore indicative of our years as a whole We are graduating In difficult times economically and socially but as a result of our education and attitudes developed during that time Ihe ability to cope should be present In all of us We are neither the graduates with hard work sure of the world as our oyster and a presidency for each neither ore we the students of the Ms determined to tear down the establishment do auay with old morals and replace them with our own Rather we have assimilated both thoughts and may be truly considered students of the 70s While being realistic enough to recognise the basic inevitability of our society we are Idealistic enough to seek to remedy Its faults by assuming our places and working with others in kind This then has been the resultofoureducation we are convinced of tbe worth of our own values and hopefully regardless of the experiences of overwhelming disorganization of the present we may reach back to these stabilities in our past to order the existent chaos Weoweourgratltudetoour teachers our parents and each other and although we may never truly articulate that It creates a bond which I hoe will never be severed concluded Miss Schenk She received the Principal Award and a special personal gift from Mr Furlong Harry Hamilton along with school band and choir entertained at the brief In termission with a special
