Sunday at the Gordon Memorial Arena In and several area figured prominently In the results The Subeectlonala are an adjunct of the more Important Sectional and occur when a certain category In the respective Is filled to overflowing In the Central region a case two categories Pre Novice and Novice Ladles bad an overabundance of skaters and thus the Subsectionala were staged Each class consisted of three flights A and C of competitors and flights were subsequently thinned down Into two sub flights of six each In order to qualify for the Sectionals to be held at the Gordon Memorial Arena November IS and IB a skater had to finish in the top four of her flight Of particular Interest to area figure skating people the performance of 14 yearold Cindy McGIUoway of Acton who finished third In Ladles Singles Group Sectionals Other Hal ton area skaters to make the Sectionals were Nancy Buys and Patty and Stndy Van of Oak- vltle Local Interest was also apparent In the performance of Miss Patricia Fletcher of Toronto Patricia and Chris Barber of Georgetown will be competing In the Sectionals In the Novice Dance category so there were many local people rooting for her Moral support aside Patricia put on a fine free skating exhibition oh Sunday and finished first In the Ladles Singles Group Another young lady from Acton Diane Baglnski who competed in the PreNovlce Ladles Singles Group B category finished eighth In her flight unfortunate will not be competing In the Sectionals Although the Subsectionals are regarded as an adjunct to the Sectionals for those skaters Involved the pressure is the the decision aa to whether or not to compete Is Just as important Should a skater decide to enter these competitions regardless of their placing they are eliminated from Further club and Interclub competition for that year It places a great burden on the skater the pro and the parents and for many of the young skatera com over the past weekend the represented the pinnacle of their young Prom an organizational point of view the Sub couldnt have been run better The officials In barge included ap proximately ioo people from the Georgetown Figure SkaUng Club plus officials from the Central Ontario Section Shirley Maraden the championship chairwoman for the Central Ontario Region was on hand over the weekend and she was ex pleased with the operation She complimented the Georgetown Club for Its part In the event and commented Things have been going super Weve had tremendous cooperation from the local club and the lovely new faculty has aided our Over BOO spectators took In Sunday freeakating part of the competition and according to Mrs Maraden this Is a better crowd than normally seen at Subsectionals and augers well for the success of the Sectionals In terms of spectator response Trrc were several out standing routines performed on Sunday however a sour note was en regarding the Ice No one from either the Georgetown Figure Skating Club or the Central Ontario Regional group voiced criticism about the Ice but several skaters were overheard commenting on the failure of the skates to grip the surface On top of this gouge marks were visible as well as water spots At one point near the end of Sunday a competition a layer of fog formed hovering Just above Ice level The personnel at the Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena did do a fine Job during the twoday however It Is too be hoped that problems that did crop up can be eliminated before the all Important Sectionals In the Novice Ladies Singles Group A the Sectional qualifiers were In order of standings Toronto The Pre Novice Ladles Singles Group C Sectional qualifiers included Carol Hume Toronto CS CC Toronto C CC Rosen and Mandy Upper Canada C Cindy McGIUoway of the Action Figure Skating Club announcement will follow It is expected that Toller will be performing Saturday November IS Sectionals for David Leslie DAVID WATSON the son of Mr end Mrs Bill Watson of Weber Drive Georgetown will be competing In the Central Ontario Regional Sectionals to be held at Georgetowns Gordon Memorial Arena November 14 15 and 18 The Cental Ontario Regional Sectionals of the Canadian Figure Skating Association will be held in Georgetown 131415 and 16 of November and this Georgetown area will be represented by four young skaters David Watson will enter the Mens category Leslie Tonna will be competing In Junior Lads and Quia Barber and Fletcher wUl be entering the Novice Dance Category To Introduce area skating enthusiasts to the young this weeks paper will feature background on Leslie Tonna and David Watson while next weeks edition will feature Chris Barber and Patricia Fletcher Leslie Tonna Is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles of line and the 15- yearold young lady Is a grade student at Milton District High School Leslie started skating at the age of nine in Chinguacousy and Is currently a member of the Granite Figure Skating of Toronto under the tutelage of Mrs Louis Strong Miss has skated In Georgetown but her quest to improve has led her to Toronto where even her summers are taken up as she tains at Weston during figure ska tings lean months She has been active com petitively since 1873 and despite other coropllsbraents In her relatively short career still regards her Initial triumph as the high of her skating career to date She competed In the Interclub competition In 1973 along with skaters from Credit Valley and clubs and took first place In the Ladles category In Leslie entered the Sectionals again in the Novlce Ladles category and In the 1974 Divlslonls held In Ottawa the young skater placed fourth In Novice Ladles This year with the exception of upcoming sectfonals Miss Tonnaa competitive skating has been limited to an club competition held in Oak ville In this competition she placed fist In the Novice Ladles event Leslies immediate goal Is a Canadian Figure Skating Champtlonship and her ultima to goal Is to represent her country In the Olympics With this in mind the Central Ontario Regional Sectionals are of prime importance she will be competing against more skaters and depending on her per formance stands a good chance to gain more than Just area David Watson the 12 year- old son of Mr and Mrs Bill Watson of Weber Drive of Georgetown Is no stranger to area figure skating adherents and bis accomplishments In a relatively short span of competitive skating more than speak for themselves David has been skating from age six but has been engaged at the competitive angle for a mere year and a half In that time he has
