two 15yearolds have been explosion in the second period spelled the difference last Friday night at the Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena as the Georgetown Chrysler Raiders trounced the Fort Erie Mavericks The first period ended In a 11 draw and In fact It was Fort Erie that opened the scoring on a goal by Hal from Bob Hanna and Owen Held at the mark Rid Schurr on his first of a pair of goals at the mark drew the oven and after minutes of play It appeared that a close checking low scoring affair was to be the story for the night The Raiders made short work of that theory early In the middle frame and by the point on goals by Mike Mahoney Craig Simpson and Rick had Jumped into a lead The Mavericks ap peared to gain back some of their as the second period wore on but then the Raiders again rocked the with a threegoal spree Mike Mahoney picked up his second goal of the game at the ie 07 mark Pete Bettiol made It at IB mark and Tommy Gilbert gave the Raiders a cushion as he scored the final Raider tally of the second period at the 1912 As the third opened both coaches made a change In their net minders Brian Hantaan was installed bet ween the Raider pipes to gain some game and give regular Keith Pallet t a rest while the Mavericks replaced veteran Pete Toninl with Myles Bosnak for obvious reasons Toninl faced shots to but did not look at all very sure of himself on the scoring efforts A raiders In the third period Hantaan faced eight shots while Bosnal was tested 13 times and both did admirably The Raider recorded a minute shutout while in the Maverick goal allowed only one score on a drive by Art Webster at the IB mark Rick Schurr of the Raiders had his best game production wise of the season for the Raiders as he scored twice and assisted on two other goals Art Webster condition of the ice in certain spots at the Gordon Memorial Arena Although no one from either the Georgetown Figure Skating Club or the Central Ontario Regional Executive cared to comment on the situation spectators and figure skaters alike were heard grumbling as the event wore on With the Central Ontario Regional Sectionals taking place this week at the Gordon Memorial Arena and the appearance of world heralded Toller Cranston In an exhibition the condition of the ice takes on added Importance Doug Vivian assistant manager of the arena ex plained to the Herald Just why certain problems arose and outlined what steps have been and would be taken to assure that the Sectionals run smoothly The main problem at the was something that no one could have foreseen the weather The combination of the mild spell and the largo number of people entering and leaving the arena didnt allow the buildings dehumldlflers to function properly and thus con densation built up This factor coupled with the fact that for figure skating the brine under the surface must be at least four degrees higher than normal created the water spots It should also be realized that the continuous program of figure skating prevented the arena workers from really tackling problem as event was being held There were noticeable ruts In the Ice but again according to Vivian little could be done about them at the time The arena operates and the ice la In use from approximately am to am every day This heavy schedule places a tremendous burden on the arena workers and while the Subsectlonals were going on the average worker put in roughly hours at the arena With the Ice being used so much ruts are bound to ap pear and the only way to get rid of them la to allow an ice buildup Unfortunately the old Catch Syndrome comes Into play here The ice could build up If the were not being used but with the sur face so much in use the ruts are hard to clear up This week however leading up to the Sectionals an extra effort is being put In to attempt to cure the Ills Flooding will be done by hand with hoses In the small hours of the morning and this should clear up the ruts and level the ice surface Similarly all arena workers Including some borrowed from the memorial arena will work extra hours for the com petition Vivian and his crew realize the importance of these competitions for figure skating people However it be pointed out that there Is always two sides to a problem and both deserve All concerned ore at tempting to have things running smoothly and the various people Involved both from figure skating and from the arena should be com mended for their efforts Hopefully the weather will cooperate but then again thats up to someone else and no one can predict what He will do Pee Wees take two The Canadian Tire Minor Pee Wees recorded two wins In as many outings this past week as they took a regular season contest over then Journeyed to Don Valley where they dropped their hosts 43 The Ancaster game was a strange affair In the sense that it was very close until the third period led 10 after twoperiods but let down badly In the final 20 minutes as Georgetown exploded for six unanswered goals for win Kevin Frank notched his second hat trick of the season for Georgetown with single goals being rapped In by Hatcher Scott Pen tesco and Adams In exhibition win over Don Valley It was obvious that both teams were well matched and the score reflected this as the game was knotted 33 after minutes of play At the mark however Kevin Frank scored what proved to be the winning tally on passes from Geordie Adams and Kennedy This was Franks second goal of the game other Georgetown goals were scored by Davie Norton and Geordle Adams The Georgetown Gage Stationary Major Bantams played three games In as many days this past week and dropped games to Milton and Burlington while recording a win over On November the Gage crew lost 41 to Milton as hey snowed little hustle and pretty well allowed Milton their own way Ian Reeks scored the lone Georgetown tally with Phil Buck and Dave getting the assists Last Wednesday the Major Bantams Journeyed to do battle with the league leaders and though the Georgetown boys clearly outplayed their hosts ended up on the short end of a 10 count John Barnes and Mark strong game on defense Last Thursday the Gage boys hosted Chlng and showed that their performance against Burlington was no fluke as they completely dominated In pickingupa73wln The line Ian Reeks Dave Kemshead and Greg Thompson displayed good positional play and ac counted for four of Ihe seven Georgetown goals Greg Thompson recorded a hat trick while singles went to Ian Reeks Bruce McCandless Mark and Mark Geminis lose out on opportunity j The Georgetown Geminis had an opportunity last week to move Into a tie with in Central Ontario Junior 8 play unfortunately their loss to Dixie at home on Saturday night kept them In fourth spot One statistic that will have to improve is the Goals For record this category Their Goals Against record however Is number two in the league Just three goals behind league leading Burlington Credit for this Is due to Rick Thomkinson who has performed admirably in Gemini nets Central OntarIoJunlor TEAM Burlington SlreetsvuJe Oakville Georgetown Dixie Brampton Milton Raiders hook the Raiders gave them was impressive The Raiders whipped the Mudcats on what can be described as an outstanding team effort Craig Simpson and Guy each potted two goals singles were counted by Bill Wheeler George rigor Tommy Gilbert and Rick Schurr Gilbert and Schurr a goals were both shorthanded unassisted efforts lending credence to the belief that the Raiders are perhaps the moat His constant
