Page Wednesday I Probe wants garbage study broadened Pollution Probe Georgetown has tub ml tied a brief to the technical committee looking Into a Hall on solid waste recovery program urging that the study terms of reference be broadened to consider of reducing waste instead of merely handling it The recognition by the region of garbage disposal as a major concern Is timely Mr Mitchell commented The extension of the committees terms of reference to consider the roots of the garbage problem and not Just the next place for disposal should be mandatory Pollution Probe Georgetown has suggested a number of schemes thai the region could consider In tackling Iho gar problem on a regional level including banning of returnable soft drink bottles and cans London Ontario they noted has passed such a bylaw ana should bo considering urging all Ha area municipalities to do the same They urged the region to set up an Interim program of household separation and collection of recyclable and recyclable materials Home separation schemes arc not capital Intensive and can be set up very rapidly much of the equipment for separate collections or depots can be rented trailers and storage bins In view of the extremely short life remaining in the existing landfill sites It seems to be most Important lo effect on Immediate reduction In the rate of garbage generation To old In that he also suggested thai the region Initiate a public education program using a fullscale publicity campaign and en In the monthly water bills from the region They also suggested that a permanent works department program be organized to Identify major waste producers In the region and encourage them to reduce and recycle their byproducts where possible The aims of the study being carried out presently by the province and the region should include Mr Mitchell noted Reduction of the amount of garbage at source He use of the greatest proportion of the garbage 1 returnable hot tics cottons crates pallets Extraction of energy from the remainder to leave a minimum inert quantity for landfill or other use Mr Mitchell added that those suggestions when presented to a previous con suiting firm looking Into disposal were airily Halton a problems dismissed as motherhood a talc men Is only relevant to federal and provincial policy There la much however that can be done at the regional level if the inertia and unwarranted skepticism can be swept away Come Along full of fun for the family Judy Alexander seeking second term as chairman WHAT A GAL Beth daughter of year student University strongly Mr and Mrs William Laldlaw of Nerval believes that Hal tons agricultural industry is s Dairy princeaa Beth a third on the up and up Judy Alexander is not ex pected to be opposed In her bid for a second term as chairman of the Board of Education The Oakvillc representative on the board stated late in 1975 that she would be seeking term and her acclamation to that position Is expected lo take place this Thursday evening when the board holds its Inaugural meeting for There could however be an election for the office of vice chairman Gary Morton of Burlington the present vice chairman has staled that he will not be seeking a second term leaving the office open 1975 was perhaps the most controversial year In the board a history many trustees found themselves the targets tor criticism by parents and teachers Morton In particular has found himself In awkward situations recently as he as has been directly confronted by Renaissance representatives on his stand on the board affirmation of their Christian principles In teaching girl Haltons Dairy Princess Beth Ilalton claimed Da ry Princess for 197D Is confident that will continue its steady growth in the agricultural business Resulting from that she predicts Halton will become more and more recognized as an Important agricultural Beth the yearold daughter of Mr and Mrs Will am Laldlaw of Norval has lived on a farm all her life and knows Just about all there is to know about the cattle industry With her parent farm focused on cattle and with herself having completed 13 Courses plus two calf clubs on lop of being a third year student at the University of Beth has been and continues to be surrounded by farming The Milk Committee re pre sen lathes of the Ontario Milk Marketing Board con tacted Beth to ask her to be Dairy On Saturday Dec In the new agriculture building in Milton Beth was crowned by Joyce of Milton 1915 Dairy Princess A Dairy is primarily a public relations person for farming A Princess attends most of the fairs in the county speaks to various community organizations and attends various annual meetings of the committees of the agricultural branches In County explained Beth 1 accepted because this will be a good experience for mc 111 have to go out meet and talk with people and It will also serve as a learning ex petience for Beth enjoys living on the farm For reasons unknown to her she d much rather live on a farm than in the city I really can t see why enjoy farm living so much I guess It Just because I like It I would like to live on a farm of my own for the rest of my life In her rural living Beth has experienced everything from the delivery of calves to chasing of loose cattle lo the final destiny of the livestock experiences which urban folks are totally unaware of Beth feels there are really few differences between rural and urban living One of the few differences I know of Is as a child I had much more space to play In than children In subdivisions But Halton is so close to the big centres that you don have that feeling of Isolation When farms are somewhat Isolated that is when you find a big difference in life styles and ways of living there is a lot nobby farming in People from the city buy a piece of land breed some horses or cattle simply to experience a somewhat slower more relaxed way of life Beth being Involved In the organization since the age of 12 holds much admiration In the club I impressed with a II Its Interesting and fun The ones who are involved in the are our farmers of the future and the girls in ihe get more and more Involved in other areas such as calf and dairy clubs At a recent calf competition I saw more girls leading calves than men A farmer wife works side by side with her husband no matter how many hired hands there arc on the farm If something has to be done outside of the house she s always there Beth continues to stress that anyone raised and or living on a farm shares the burdens and rewards of farm life no matter age Now It hard to find people are willing to work on a farm mainly because the wages are not Impressive as a factory or office Job For especially in this area Is Just starting to gel back on There Is much more competition in farming now and a farm has to be con ducted if It a done for a living an business type of profession In order to survive a farmer has lo specialize In some field Living off the land as It used to be Is gone Of course n any forms have their own chickens milk and cows etc but strictly living off them is now a rarity arming Is a tough life Its the most demanding sort of profession which requires days of devotion and hard work concluded a pleasant hard working and experienced Dairy Princess Providing the weather co operates lots of snow the Credit Valley Conaervatlon Authority will once again well worth the wait for Al Rice of Georgetown who Standing proud and erect on Ihe walnut birch and mahogany trimmed chess board the two gallant op ponents face one another The ancient civilization of North America the At tecs versus the stalwart Spanish forces are the two teams fighting to come out the victors In the chess gome being played by Rice of Georgetown Considered rare this chess set was the original creation of a well known Toronto artist Mr Rice la one of Ihrco local men ho are the proud owners of the unusual Eric of Georgetown and Barry of Milton oil partners or Cercor Incorporated In Georgetown where the sets were cast and bronzed all own Identical seta Thee will be only eleven other possible owners of identical sets for it will be produced 14 times Then the molds will be destroyed to avoid any possibility of further duplications Siggy Puchta who designed a similar chess set with the opponents being the Indians and the Settlers approached Cercor formerly called Mid Canadian Investment Casting Ltd to cast and brome the set The company accepted with the stipulation that the three men each received one or the It took one and a half years complete the of the sets The pawns weighing about half a pound and the Kings to one pound Cercor specialized in casting precision machine parts up until eight years ago when Eric was approached by a number of Toronto sculptors to begin casting sculptures Now art pieces have become one of Ihe busiest sections of ihe company Is one of the few companies remaining In Canada which still uses the lost wax process Jin Its casting original piece in used to make the casting molds The method thus lends itself to irregular shapes often found in sculturcs Casting normally in bronze or aluminum requires several steps The first Is to take a mold for the wax lo be poured of the such chess seta surrounded by plaster Once mold has set the original is removed and the wax a much tougher material than domestic candle wax is poured Into the space The wax copy of the original Is then removed and a craft attaches extra work branches the sprucing With these tentacles fixed to It the wax Is then coated In a liquid ceramic material which also coats the inside of hollow waxes The coating is a lengthy process which Involves dipping the wax Into the liquid over and over again and dusting It with a ceramic powder allowing each new layer to dry When the Job is done the wax is heated to about degrees and is poured away or lost giving the process its name The empty ceramic shell is baked in order to moke a truly hard ceramic Then it is checked for minute cracks that could cause the shell to crack when it receives the molten alloy PLAYING CHESS IN and each other The biggest decision at times for Rice of Georgetown find it all that the girls is deciding which team to choose as much more fun playing chess when Its the their own Aztecs and the Spaniards competing against
