Page THE HERALD Wednesday February IS Todays abused child is the abusing parent of tomorrow An organization such aa Parents Anonymous should be formed in Hal ton Hills A group such as that would not only be of benefit to those parents who abuse their children but would also be beneficial to the community a whole said Lynn Rae a director of the Torontobased Parents Anonymous in speaking to the Local Council of Women Friday afternoon on the topic of Child Abuse Mrs Roe cautioned that If such a group was established in Hal ton Hills great care must be taken when selecting the directors and helpers of the groups She pointed out that a person who was chosen to head the sessions must not be at oil biased and must be able to understand the reasonings behind why a parent or parents abuse their children If a parent saw the slightest hint of prejudice against by the personnel the parent not relate and in fact would not return to the sessions explained Mrs Roe Mrs introduced her topic of child abuse by presenting a half hour film entitled Fragile Handle with Care a production made In the United States which unlike the many medical films based on child abuse relates to the public and to the abusing The very emotional and profound 11m illustrated the II- hrcejbjr what happened Mrs their reasonings behind the pointed out that advice is not abuse and the help that was directly given but the parents given to these parents Mrs Roc outlined the tunc lions behind Parents Anonymous and explained that It is a community self help organization operating with a handful of volunteers and handful of professional people Parents Anonymous meet once a week In two locations in Toronto in Informal discussion groups The parents relate their past week and if a parent has had socalled good week he or she explains how they coped throughout the week If a parent found it very difficult he or explain why Lynn Theyre OUR cops Sports and family are important to this policeman themselves how they coped with a similar situation and the parents help work out each others problems We ore a noncritical non- judging group but ve do lend lots of support said Mrs Many child abusers do not wish to sec professional person because they do deep down feci for what they are doing They have a lack of a good concept within them Mrs explained that it Is often parents who were abused themselves as children who ore later abusing parents When we speak of an abusing parent we arc not talking about a parent who occasionally spanks a child or strikes a child we arc talking about parents who damage their child cither emotionally physically nutritiously Mrs Rue told thai Parents Anonym dub findings that abusing parents often have simitar stemming emotional problems They auso the mtbiliti for a parent with stress and do not allow ihe parent to handle his An abusing World Day of Prayer from a child just pectations were loo high when that same parent was a child Such a parent demands the Inuo at In luo tase where a child cries a parents refers this as example of rejection and thinks the child docs not love parent If and when the continues Mrs Roe said that the frequency rate of child abuse is higher In tower income families and explains that families who arc In financial fnred with greater amounts of stress and problemi She did quickly point out ihni child abuse is common in higher income families well It Is rare occasion when a child will reveal that he or she 11 and who it be by immediate relatives moiond father or brother by more distant relatives an uncle or aunt or their babysitter or any other known persons Mrs sold that children ore too fearful of losing their security If the treatment they were receiving was known Just in case their bit of security was taken from the child Mrs also noted that a child often feels that he or she deserves the names and beatings In turn when this child ages the child feels ho or she is old enough now to beat their own An abused child also In may cases thinks It is the came situation In all families and If a child does not tell of the beatings then it up to be other members of the com munity to call the Childrens Aid Society who in lum will Investigate to their fullest Parents need help If there is love and respect In oneself then this on the child If parent has no respect for themselves they will relate this to their child Abusing parents need to be pp rented as they themselves arc paren ting They need the support of the community If you handle yourself with care you will handle your child with care concluded Mrs
