Pag THE HERALD 1977 JOYCE BEATON How do you see yourself at 80 How do you see yourself as an old person Who I age do you consider Is old Would you cringe the thought of ever being referred to as a senior At age ore we old Old age creeps up on us We notice it first In lack of physical strength We become tired not necessarily mental fatigue but rather losing the means of getting around easily Sometimes old people arc victims of the limitations they put upon themselves When they were younger they thought a nursing home or old age home was a place you went to die They put a celling on their lives They remember how their parents were at their age or how a beloved uncle became senile and are sure they will do the Will you be alone- The first years of our lives we don t think much about growing old When wo do our thoughts are very revealing Some of us see ourselves as very lonely people sitting passively In our little rooms waiting to die Others feel age releases some of the Inhibitions and enables us to speak our minds freely with nothing to lose I see myself with time for myself Time to dream Time to do what want to do when I want to do it Obviously a sign I must Feel restricted now 1 envision a time when I can taunt convention write what I want to when I want to Age seems to be a lessening of responsibilities and a lime of freedom ill jouftU free Then why don old people feel free Perhaps they are victimized by society that expects them to act in a certain way When they are no longer physically able to care or themselves we provide homes for them We also provide the rules At a time in our lives when we need love and physical contact more than ever before we are deprived of It If we don have our families around us to kiss us who will If we are lonely who will hold us In their arms while we fall asleep Why do we insist upon segregating the sexes because they become old What business is it of ours to restrict sexual activity if that s what needed Why do we insist people keep busy Why do we consider it sad to see old people silting doing nothing With their busy days behind them what wrong with gazing out the window reliving some of the happy times of long ago What wrong with pulling the pictures out of the album time and time again Is the word senility a convenient peg upon which to hand the nonconformity of the aged Old people ore the completion of the 10yearold child the sophisticated young person and the established middleaged Their hearts still yearn and their feelings can still be hurt In most cases It just the body that wears out but our mental condition can affect our physical Will be bored Loneliness boredom and depression can be the plague of old age The time to prepare ourselves for this inevitable state Is now I don mean financial preparation but envisioning ourselves as old people I heard of a lady who was visited by a conscientious young curate Inviting her to a weekly meeting at the church where we have a number of elderly ladies meeting for prayer talk and tea Her reply was No thank you I don care for the company of elderly ladies I prefer to associate with young people She was at the time Joyce
