Twin Cee International VicePresident And Director for Canada LAW When working people end their parades or pack up their picnic baskets this Labour Day I hope they will turn their thoughts for a few moments to what this day Is really all about Labour Day is about people working people For those of us fortunate enough to belong to organized labour the day has special significance Its an op portunity to reflect on the heritage handed Town to us by those who buOt the labour movement through per sonal sacrifice and often by having their blood shed But Labour Day must be more than a time for reflection Itmustbea for assessing our present and future roles We have come a long way in a few decades in Canada but we nave even further to go One of the most significant developments of this decade occurred Oct when we stood strong to show the Federal govern ment our contempt for its wage controls program Organized labour a new era in Canada that day We cannot go backward We have shown that we are no longer willing to march to the tunc of the piper who gets his pay from a government thafallows itielf to be co- opted by large corporations Organized labour in Canada now marches to a different drummer And march we must And when I say march I mean we must prepared to stand as we did Oct 1976 and be counted I don mean just on Labour Day either We must be Drenared to stand every day not only for ourselves but for those unable to stand up for themselves for the more than 1 000 people in this country who cannot find jobs for the senior citizens whose plight is ignored by a callous government for those Native Canadians who rights are being trampled and for those too young to speak out That what Labour Day is all about We must march as a force in this country until the cancer that is destroying our economy is cured until every Canadian can regain the dignity that comes with having a job and until the twisted economic planning that has led us to this crisis is exposed for what it la The time has come if 1 may paraphrase the late John Kennedy when organized workers must ask not what their union can do for them hut what they can do for the labour movement and in turn for their fellow Canadians We have come a long way since Oct 14 We have dared to criticize the lack of any rational in dustnal strategy for Canada and to say there is a profound nay a desperate need for restructuring of DENNIS the country industries We have challenged the ok of wage controls as a viable solution to the country s economic ills We have questioned efforts by some politicians in Ottawa to use the issue of Quebec independence as a smokescreen to divert public at tention from the real issues facing the nation a sick economy and disgraceful unemployment We have advocated a viable role for organized labour in bringing solutions to the economic ills facing Canada met with a proposal that would have given us token in volvemcnt and would have made use the scapegoats for government mismanagement We rejected that And if you take the time to examine the evidence you will discover that we have not been talking for the sake of heanng our selves The statistics bear out the truths of our statements Yet if we are to have a con effect upon the crisis facing Canada we must march together and speak with a single strong voice a voice loud enough to shake people out of their complacency Organized labour in this country is moving and it must not slop It cannot stop Labour Day 1977 is a time for ourselves to the challenges that Tie ahead We cannot afford to be com Neither can we afford to conform Nor can we afford to quarrel among ourselves That why I urge you when you set aside those banners or put the picnic basket into the trunk Monday to think about what the day really means to government has placed on workers and to search for the economic solutions that will stimulate and provide Jobs for Canadians Let us work together to mobilize the jobless so they can help them selves
