Ontario Outdoors p Canada The GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY CONVENTION of the ONTARIO FEDERATION of ANGLERS AND HUNTERS being held this weekend The dates are Feb Mb tomorrow to eb 12 Sunday and should prove to be the beat convention ever These events are always a highlight of the year to those who arc seriously Interested In the program of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters This year It Is being held In the Constellation Hotel at Rood near the In other words on ilhe Airport Strip or at least at the edges of it With 17 members this could prove to be one of the biggest conventions ever to hit the Toronto area if we have good turnout That of course depends on the members how concerned they are In regards to the outdoors and what Is happening to our sport and recreation That word recreation can be torn apart and Tooted at In many ways The word basically means to create anew and that is get out of the lime spend in the outdoors A new perspective on life is created every time I go out II is rejuvenation of the of man and woman as they eel the drama the excitement thewildlh around them If you hove never felt things then maybe you are outdoors lor the wrong reason and should take slock of the things you are looking for when you spend time in the forests In Ontario and elsewhere I keep thinking that I should remind people feed the birds but if you have a feeder and are not it now then you can not be depended upon to maintain that feeding schedule dally and if not the birds will come for nothing They do depend upon that If arc feeding them regularly then you do not need a reminder ana already know the pleasure that a bird feeder can bring you and family Many visitors to Algonquin Park do not realize that the Park is not patrolled In winter Some trails are ploughed out but only to parking lots From there you arc on your own and have to carry all your gear lo the camp sites This also applies to firewood although this is sup piled and there are only outside toilets There no charge for winter activities such as crosscountry winter camping and hiking but make sure that some one knows where you will be in case of an 11c cident Walleye season openers for the next few years May 19 1980May 1981 May 1G 1B82 May 15 1983 May This will give you a chance to plan ahead if you like to plan that far The reason for these dates is it falls on the third Saturday in May each year in order to protect the Walleye during its spawning run This third Saturday openings will always begin before the Viclorla Day Holiday and that is good news for those who like make somewhat of a Holiday out of the opening day fishing trip This plan started in and was studied for its effect on the fish and heir ability to reproduce well enough support a good sport fishery seems to be working as the catches are as good if not better than they have been in many years the fish seem to be getting bigger too although his could be due lo the better skill of today anglers Whatever the reason the Walleye sure makes for a better time out ONTARIO OUTDOORS Streetsville first Acton last but then what Only two positions are tain beading Into the last week of the schedule The Streets villc Derbys will finish first and the Acton Sabres will finish Last It should be a real dog fight to decide the remaining tlons The most Important battle around these parts is the one for sixth place This last week the Georgetown Gemini took over that spot by defeating a strong Burlington team They now lead the Brampton Logon Cbevys by two points Logan Chevys have two games remaining on their against the Milton Fly era and The Fly en must win their wo remain games if they hope to hove a chance of finishing in third place By the time this story is printed Georgetown may have already clinched a playoff They played the Cougars again last night and if they won third place Is no matter what Brampton does The Streetsville Derbys have set quite few individual records during their season and now they are dosing In on a few team Streets Dixie Burlington Oakville Milton Georgetown The old record was set by Oakville in 1972 That was seven losses Even If the Der lose their wo remaining games they will have only six losses They have also set a total points record and most wins record The puzzling team in the standings is Dixie Last week they games to the Sabres and Cougars and yet they handed the Derbys their fourth loss of the season Although the Sabres have only won four games Ibis year It is two more than the team won last year If the teams end up In the order they arc in now the playoff matchups will be as follows Streetsville vs Georgetown Dixie Milton and Burlington vs They would all be good match Although it appears on paper hat the Gems would not have a chance against he the league leaders could have trouble disposing of the sixth place club The Gems have ted Streetsville twice his year and last week lost to them by only a score The Gems also have a rcpu a Hon as being a very lough earn in the playoffs The other two scries would be toss as ait he teams are just about evenly matched GP Sabres win in Acton Inscoe handles 57shots THE HERALD being a big win lor the Sabres the game also showed that the second place Beehives may be easy pickings In the playoffs For the first half of the season they were the surprise of he league as they battled the Streetsville for first place During the second half of the season the Beehives have been a very overage hockey club with jusl better than record They will have to face a lough team in the first round of the playoffs with either the Burlington Cougors Milton or Blades being their opponents Any of those teams have he talent to defeat he Beehives The win gave the Sabres 10 points for the season with four wins and two ties LINING HIM UP And now heres the bad news Aside from the big win over he Dixie Beehives the Acton Sabres did not fare loo well during last week They tost to Ihe
