Georgetown district high school was definitely ihe place lo be last Thursday night was on that night that the school paid tribute lo Its many excellent at the annual awards night It was my first athletic banquet at the school Someone who has attended more than that number told me it was an unusually lowkeyed evening There arc usually more standing ovations the veteran banquet goer said The people who received standing ovations last Thursday truly deserved The first standing ovation went out to the catering staff who prepared con only be called a fantastic dinner When youre used to a steady diet of quarter pounders and submarines two 50foot buffet tables packed with vegetables fruits cold cuts and hot meat can only be described as fantastic Big ovations were also reserved for the athletes who look the major awards year Phillips Female Athlete of be Year and Dave Peterson Athlete of Ihe Year both to be very popular choices By the way it is not often that you see a correction on story in the same issue but there is a mistake in the story on the banquet Phillips and both par in four sports not three Both the athletes were also on the badminton team One of the biggest ovations of the evening went to the three men who prepared the annual slide show They are Grant Al and Don Hunt had heard much nil good about the show but it proved to be even better than 1 had expected The three men did a remarkable lob of lliu various Rebel teams in action The topping on the cake was the very appropriate music they chose to accompany slides One slide which showed wrestler Peter walking off the podium oiler receiving a gold medal in my opinion best exemplified the heme of this years banquet The joy of Effort had the medal around his neck his arms raised in victory and the pure ecstacy on his face Winning isnt everything but il we made a lot more joyful a young man than finishing second wo have However it was Sue Alexander who spoke on behalf of the athletes who best said what the Joy of Effort Is all about She pointed out that participation not necessarily winning is the main thing in sports Altera you cant get the great feeling of winning without first participating and it vour best effort There are some people who feel that individuals should not be recognized because it lends to breed con tempi and competition between teammates and friends I tend to think that recognition is a big part In participating in sports People like Phillips Ian Clark Fournier Dan Farkas Doug Smith and many others work extremely hard during their season Part of payment has to be getting decked out enjoying a good meal and in essence receiving their due recognition Speaking of receiving due recognition tomorrow night Oddfellow Hall in Georgetown the Hills Athlete of the Year will be crowned The three nominees for the award are Peter Kris Barber and Ian Clark speakers for the evening will be J I and Brian Albrecht is tin general manger of the Toronto Metros Croatia and is
