July Learning is an experience in Acton Walkabout When I started high school In Acton In teaming was completely a classroom ex pcrience Students attended classes took notes given by the teacher and occasionally went on a field trip There was very little thinking done by students during the hours they spent at school what was done was memorising what teachers said We memorised the capitals of Europe mathematical for and wrote reviews It was not until 1976 that Clare Henderson In a of lear which actually involved thinking to students of Acton high school and not until this past Sep tember that I had the ex of Walkabout he Idea of the Walkabout Is adapted from the Australian Aborigines rite of passage from child to adult A young boy Is alone into the wilderness and must either survive and return an adult or dip The youth has only himtelf to depend on Tor survival and must draw upon his inner and spiritual resources confront his fears and learn deritand himself as well as the of which he is a part Maurice Gibbons a professor of education at Simon University and author of several books dialing with education has put Attendance revenues double hears Semi annual figures presented to the Credit Volley Conservation Authority Thursday show nearly twice as many people attending con areas compared to the samp period in 1977 And the membership of the CVCA was also happy lo hear that losses on operations have 131 from 872 for the same period last year Bui while the figures ore welcomed they also reflect the winter program held this year at Terra conservation figures which were not Restoration studied for area lime kilns Credit Volley Corservatlon Authority will in vesUgati the possibility of restoration or the lime kilns at the Conservation Area The recommendation by the Credit Valley Conservation Authority Foundation an advisory board to the authority was approved at the 187th of the authority held Thursday in Meadow vale CVCA staff is expected close to breaking Attendance at CVCA areas increased to from last four persons per vehicle and persons per bus admitted Terra received 38 of the visitors during the first six months of up from But according to authority chairman Grant Clarkson the pool at forth the idea of the Walkabout In an article no states the young North American Is faced with written that test skills far removed from the actual experience he will have in real life he looks for ward tests on the survival technique of Aborigines or the history of heir weaponry as subjects and tests sucked dry of the richness of experience in tin end having little do directly with anything critical or even significant hat hi anticipates being involved in as an adult except the pursuit of more formal education Gibbons continues by saying that students In most schools arc deprived of any raining In decision making and only rarely make decisions of any importance They arc not taught to implement their Ideas and later reassess these Ideas the primary to a pattern of continuing growth I agree with Gibbons as does Henderson who decided to act on the Walkabout iced when his daughter in Trade al the time was given a Grade r reader as program Henderson this Authority said he CVCA wiH have to consider restoration carefully several other projects ore under way by conservation authorities and other in the southern Ontario area He that should kilns provide a uniqueness not shown in other projects the should consider he restoration the making money He noted that only had been received from its operation While Tirra earned marly MO in revenue the of operations at the area reached more than more than lait year from CVCA Is raised through four areas Meadow vale and Terra Assistant approved for nature program Henderson suggest ideas to them or my own Walkabout In my final semester Acton high 1 chose to write sports for The Herald As journalism was he career I planned pursue I Tell this would be a good experience in deciding whether newspaper what I reolly My Walkabout fit the Practical Skills Experience area and through it I have gained much experience In my I covered all the specific objectives demand id by Walkabout Increased knowledge new skills challenging development of selfconfidence and develop ment of social skills Through m association with The Herald I have a basic knowledge of lake with me to college Henderson anticipated three very significant results In thi Walkabout enrichment program Involve a student learning to become competent In and decisive Learning competence In voltes the ability to something which Is both interesting and useful to the individual and which the student can be proud of The student becomes i motion ally prepared to teach himself new and different tasks and leach these new asks to himself In this way the learning process can continue after format has ended and in some cases become more satisfying and enriching The second goat Is individual independence A student in vents his own project carries evaluates it himself and thus gains from the ex pcrience The Independence of the inlire project helps self motivated of always depending on others lo decide what they should do Being successful in these ilk a bout projects en courages the student at tempt more self Initiated projects The third aim of he Walkabout is to leach lo become decisive They arc able to sec many possibilities choose only one which they feel wilt be the most beneficial This ability to be is one of the basic traits of a happy and person Henderson feels Walkabout changes you positively adding to your skills and your understanding of self and others It enhances your emotional so hat you become a strong mature resourceful always learning always growing fully the richness of life Although then will always be those zombies who refuse self who Just drill through life aimlessly the Walkobout helps those others to learn the satisfaction of self accomplishment early enough In life that they may change patterns and real lie their full potential Tills type of innchment program goes a long way beyond Ihe of traditional education and more of programs should raged only but also basic core of subject courses Instead of an exception Walkabout like courses should be the core of the school system I learned more valuable Information from the two Walkabouts I experienced thai I had in most of my years of formal schooling And that certainly not very encouraging for Ihe present system Fresh Chicken Legs or Breasts CUT FROM CANADA GRADE A
