September Thcr ore always a lot of activities during the fall season In the Ontario outdoors took this photograph during a very busy auction at Black Creek Pioneer Village Ontario Outdoors FALL IS THE HOTTEST For fishing that is and it is a well documented fact that the many species of game fish that are available to us here in Ontario get themseUes ready for the winter by feeding heavily and we can cash in on this Brook Trout are HOT from now until the end of the season Sept 30 here and are willing to hit most anything that looks like food Those areas that have been devoid of fish all summer v ill now have trout In them when il is cool or overcast and some of the biggest fish of the year are taken now The same applies to pike and small and large mouth in fact some fishermen don start fishing until the fall months Everyone following the SALMON program knows that the fall salmon arc bigger than the spring salmon although this is mainly due to the fact that they arc only available to the shore fishermen in the fall months The spring does provide some offshore fishing but the river fishing is only in the time slot of late August and more properly the second week of September on The salmon will soon start to ascend he rivers with the spawning urge brought on by cooler waters and head to deaths llemembcr to treat the rivers as you would someone living room Some areas you may fish others you Always leave the area cleaner than you found It A great many and CHINOOK salmon ore caught each by shore fishermen and thousands of persons fish the rivers This compounds the problems as not everyone is a sportsman and the excitement draws many who will not fish the rest of the SNAGGING is still illegal and any snagged fish accidentally or otherwise MUST be released Also remember the trout season closes Sept so handle these fish with care and release If you use the gill area as a handle that fish will die even from minor damage to the sensitive gill rakers The Canadian National Sportsmen Show gets bigger and belter each year One of these DOCKS IDE Canada largest floating boat show will bo held Sept to 17 alongside Lakeshorc in Toronto The actual location is the entrance to Ontario Place and the many boats will range from the smallest to the world largest Interest can be measured by the 20 visitors that usually sec year This Is probably the place to learn of the boat charter available for cruises In the Caribbean and Virgin Islands These boats are Canadian owned and arc moored in the south ail you have to do get there for a boating vacation in the sun country The and St Lawrence River area is still under dispute between the Ontario and Quebec governments what In other words an old fashioned border dispute Also deer and moose areas changes so drastically that need to check each lone carefully before hunt Sportsman Waterfowl Day held at Darlington Provincial Park last Sunday to be a good day The rain we had here was not at all evident at Darlington Pal was take two big wins victories This week in Georgetown soccer By Al TOUCH The Ontario semi finals have come and gone in a weekend of contrasting weather A sunny Saturday With the field in good condition alt day saw six matches The first three games went into overtime one stretching penalty kicks and the day ended slightly after Sunday opened well within the hour torrential rain brought a temporary halt to proceedings on two occasions However the field in reasonable condition An interesting factor is only of all double or triple entries had two winners Another was the number of missed penalty shots eight on Saturday and five on Sunday A coach would do well lo make this part of his coaching programme In one game a lone six penalties were missed The Ontario finals take place in Burlington on Sat On the same day Ihc girls Cup Finals ore to be held in Georgetown whether or not our girls reach thai stage This is tribute to the facilities at Cedarvolc the cooperation of senior and youth soccer Mrs Fields care taker and the town lies pi men ted throughout both days on the facilities Dave and super mom did a super job on the refresh- The only other local involve ment was Bryan Turner cap and son Steves shin pads which took part on sides in the first game College are start ing soccer Why that should Interest us is due to Sheila a player and coach of several years standings Shell a is lo attempt to organize coach and referee male and female soccer at the college Sheila has also been cleared to play for the senior girls house league Strikers at a special exec hearing on Saturday II tuught It it ping one a footing during Ontario Cup action at It rained hard throughout the day In the above photograph It Is St Francis Wexford St Francis won the game In penalty shot alter there wan no scoring In minutes of play We have to give serious though to our soccer set up for 79 Whilst I believe we have had a good year Ihere have still been some problems Re ferees shortage and an appli cation has been made to to run an official course in April to refresh existing refs and obtain new qualifiers Coaching schools for players are needed and the attempt earlier this year was not too successful Coaching schools for coaches and managers are also a necessity There Is a move afoot to allow only qualified coaches at inter district levels Girls soc cer needs closely looked at for improvement In coaching fac ilities and Increases in cum On the rep side the question arises of who Is to coach and manage and In which age groups We are definitely losing some of this years coaches At the same time some of our earns are not entirely compe titive nor reliable in turning out There also Is the question of where do we play lively at some Peel boys league coaches are unhappy with Hallon clubs execs want an Increase in girls rep applications in The girls and boys house leagues may be expanded to include Milton Acton and Pine view The coming general meeting in October November should prove to be interesting We also anticipate an Increase in senior soccer cams which will place a greater strain on our already heavily strained fields Returning to two thoughts for a moment Registration of referees now requires and photograph perhaps this responsibility Perhaps we should consider payment lo refs for matches performed Certainly some of the lads are worthy officials and would be used in Ontario cups and senior matches If officially registered Think on thinking of grade to hockey AAA etc Of course 1st 2nd and 3rd divisions have a similar leg although by result rather than district or size It seems to me that the trophy winners do have a distinct advantage In choice of players for Rep Consider Bramptons population against Georgetowns 20 or so for example Our minor pee wees this year were chosen from players the total registration far 197B Speaks for itself However they are still one or the lop teams in their division The house league 1977 winners are re quested
