Pit TOE We lay Finn did good job BySUELEHN The NHL tent their best players The Sorted sent their beat players Some of the beat referees and lines men in hockey today also gathered at toe Challenge CUP in New York City One of those linesman was Ron Finn of Georgetown who was one of the officials In the second game of three game series on Satur day Finn worked the game with referee Victor Dombrowski of be Soviet Union and says lhat he called a good game and the NHL allstars coul dnt blame him for their loss has been blamed before Everybody surprised at how well Dombrowskl did They were expecting him to make mistakes but he did nt said Finn The language barrier be tween Finn and the referee proved not to be a major matter according to Finn The Russian official could speak and be tween that and sign lan guage Ihere were no com munication problems be tween the officials Hockey Is hockey no mat ter what language you speak said Finn USE SKILLS He finds that the Soviet players have the basics ska ting and down to a perfection They seem to use these skills much more effectively than North American players do The Soviets are great skaters Their skate as well as their for wards do We have good skaters here top but it seems like their players can skate and handle their stick well can sUckhan- dle and skate as well as the Soviets but hes only one player said Finn The Russian hockey play ers also tend to player a tight zone according to Finn pass In the lone and they always know where each players is when they pass the puck He though that the NHL allstarts defeat could be partly attributed to the short time which they have been together The Soviet team has been together for a long time and so had much more team work going for it The NHL team may also have been go ing Into the second game The second game was a big game in the said Finn The NHL had a Everybody sees the best hockey tbey possibly can lead they usually expect to win They Just got too confi dent and lost the lead and then the game Finn finds these Interna tional competitions a wel come change from NHL games He finds that hockey is one of few sports popular in North America which of fers its fans a chance to view international competitions at the professional level Gems finish season with two setbacks The Georgetown Gemlnls dismal season came to an end with two more loses last week They lost a 109 decis ion to Oakvllje here last Tuesday and Thomhill beat them there Friday The showing against the Blades was very encourag ing as the Gems played one of the three top teams a close game One of the Gems problems this year has been their inability to give the big clubs and Burlington good games It was a barnburner ail the way with both teams pulling out all the offensive stops RECORD BREAKER One of the Blades reasons for playing it wide open was undoubtedly to have Frank add to his record- setting point total Camevale picked up only a goal and an assist on the Balanced for Bruin The Sheridan College bas ketball Bruins got balanced scoring In and wins over George Brown and Colleges respective ly- Jerry Auger led the Bruins over George Brown with strong in the big Gem goaltender was kicking them left and right Andy opened the scoring on an unassisted goal Greg Rowan came back to tie it up for the Blades went ahead on Kevin Adams goal The Gems then got goals by Steve Grossman from Broadbent and Marty Power and Greg Thompson from Tony Glannlni and Bob Allison they had the lead again The second period proved to be the Gems downfall as they were got the first Blades goal on another short- handed goal Other scorers were Craig Kowalchuk Mike Brian Marvel Willie McFarlane and Adam on the power scoring cagers points Georgetowns Mark hit for points with Paul Kane scoring 16 Kane and Andre Graovac both had 15 against with Reis right behind them with Auger had REP HOCKEY ALL STAR GAMES Major AtomThursFeb Major Atom Feb Owen Sound Mem MinorPeWeeSatFeb 17 Owen Sound Minor and setting him up With 442 showing on the clock Martin completed his hat trick and the Gems were within one goal Barnes and Mike assisted The Blades scored with seconds showing on the clock to regain scored two goals In the first period to put the Gems behind the eight boll The scorers were Bruce Clatworthy and Mike Davidson In the second period the Gems got goals from Mark Falby and Both were solo efforts The Thunderbirds Rick added to their tally and the led heading into the final Kurt Pearson am worthy scored for Thomhill In the to hand the Gems their thirtysixth and final loss of the campaign when they see a series like the Challenge Cup Soccer is about the only other team sport that professionals from countries face one another People who watch hockey arc the same people who watch baseball and football games so the only sport theyre used to seeing coun try against country competi tion of amateur teams is in hockey The players are playing for so It makes the game more exciting for the players and for the fans said Finn International competitions also present some problems for the officials which they dont generally have to deal with when working strictly within the NHL STAY ON TOES Finn has a solution worked out You have to remember that you have a job to do and you have to do the best you can at that Job You have to forget which teams are play ing and pretend that its Just another NHL game In this business you cant be bias ed You cant be for one team or country Concentration staying on your toes and experience are alt impor tant Being a linesman or a referee in the NHL can be a tough and demanding Job Snap decisions must be made and those decisions be as correct as pos sible under the circumstanc es There are so many cam eras and people at the games and depending on where they are positioned each sees a different thing Officials in sporting mat ches always get fans in the stands thinking hat the ref eree has made a mistake Finn says that you just cant let the fans bather you or let them start telling you bow you should call the plays He finds that the only real time he is aware that the fans are here is when they arent making any noise Whatever you do what ever you call you must be sure its the right thing he says When I make a mis take I know it I dont need the fans to tell me Finn has always loved hockey and wanted to play In the NHL when be was a boy When be realised that be wasnt skilled enough to make as a player in the league be opted to officiat ing Instead Starting out with what was then the Toronto Hockey League now the Metro Tor onto Hockey League as a linesman when they adver tised hat they needed new officials Finn soon moved up to the Ontario Hockey asso ciation where ho officiated In both Senior and Junior A and B division games He did not hesitate to ac cept an offer to attend tho NHL raining school for offi cials but the first year he applied there were no open ings The next year he ap plied again and was accept ed He was now been with the NHL for 10 years HAD DOUBTS As In any profession there have been times when Finn has felt that he Just cant go on any more When the NHL scheduled games over Chris mas he had to spent it away from his wife and four children He was also away from home due to his work when two of his children were bom Sometimes when Im stuck in a snowstorm far from home I ask myself what Im doing there but really do love what Im doing for a living One thing Finn enjoys about his work is the oppor tunity for ravel He works as a linesman in about SO o regular season games- per season plus exhibition and playoff games In two weeks Finn estimates that he works six games General ly he is home for five days every two weeks Depending on ho weather travelling from one city to anotbercsn be either a Joy or a very depressing Ifretyb thinks that do most of our Job on the Ice but we have to get to the game on our own We have to make our own plane and hotel reservations give us a list of hotels and a plane pass and Its up to us to get there said Finn Last year was in Boston on Thursday and then had to do a game in New York on Saturday The weather was nt good so I left for the airport around 10 on Fri day morning When I got there all the planes had been cancelled so I phoned the bus station They didnt think lhat taking a bus would be a good idea so I had to try the train I got a train at and I figured Id be in New York by three in the after noon 1 finally got there at eleven at night The next day they cancelled game and I had to try to figure out how to get home There are no teams in the NHL that Finns dislikes offi ciating for He finds that It doesnt really matter what plactra team holds In the standings as far as officiat ing goes FIGHT AS MUCH If you get wo teams that are near he bottom in he standings Its just like being a linesman for wo of the top earns They fight Just as much from the time the puck Is dropped and they keep on fighting to win he said Real fighting using fists is a different matter with Finn There are more rules ev ery year to prevent fighting Many of the players are now getting away from it Fight ing belongs In the ring with boxing and wrestling though Id rather see than sticks Its a part of he game but it shouldnt be a big part See for tax relief For personal business arm and corporate tax returns has the experience
