THE HERALD Wednesday April 1979 Page GFSC crowns its champions for the season irftwjVofil by Laura Yen a with Debbie Dull second and David Kelly the winner as the most improved female skater and took tl Trophy I wan second and Judy Hancock third Chuck woo the most Improved Lynda Shaw won the Gale Verheagen Colin Campbell was the winner of the award with Elaine Junior male skater award Bohby Sun was ccond Zoe Renaud third second and Mark Moody absent third Han Wasserman- absent third Coaches important factor to winning By BILL HUMPHREYS People are always talking about the athletes in sports major sports like hockey where we see names like Mike in the paper every day Even high school sports the athlete always receives the publicity Who makes these athletes lick Conches in my po of view are what makes a team or v dual tick among things Track and is one of the most recognized sport the world and at GDHS the sport has reached over whelming popularity has been coach for seven years while Met has done it for the lost six years When the coaches started the learn track and field at GDHS was not thought of a major sport The team was small and their record during those years was full of last place Then It started to grow Both Metcalfe and Cosgrovc went around the school and asked students to come out and they even scouted the public schools for future hopefuls NEW LOOK The r efforts gave the team a new look and fresh new talent to give other schools competition to the point where they well enough to go to the Peel Hal Metcalfe graduated from Like most successful coa they wanted to learn more to help their team They started to attend spe cial clinics and later took Athletes that were interested to these clinics to receive expert help from well known athletics The coaches also spend close to three hours at school each day to coach the team and help the vi duals better themselves For the last two years the r time and patience has paid off as the GDHS Rebels track and field team has won the Hal Ion and Peel Hal Ion and last yea r captured the rcg onals and sent well tloned athletes to the championships Well this not look any different in the eyes of the coaches as they are very optimistic So the next time you go to a sporting event look at the coaches and see how they work to drive heir team
