Home of Hills 1J 1313 A Division Canadian Newspapers Company Limited South JlS Ontario lllrtOhlMOIr Publisher 1111 It Second Mall Number o3 of parks plan raises questions Town councillor Roy Booth is correct when he terms the town need to fork over additional or the park master plan ridiculous Certainly somebody made a serious mistake somewhere along the line to put council in the position of having to pay con to explain a report that has already cost Hills a whopping However council would have compounded their mistakes had they not voted to come up with the additional cash Council real mistake was getting themselves in a position where they paid for any type of report in the first place To us and probably most taxpayers it is incomprehensible that it could cost for con to study and plan this community s recreational needs and facilities To make this figure even more the consultants have the nerve to demand additional funds before appearing at public meetings to discuss the plan Whoever drew up the original agreement with the consultants should have ensured follow up visits by the consultants were included in the original fee And we d still like to see an accounting to explain just how the initial were spent However despite this to not have consultants present at the upcoming public meetings set to discuss the parks master plan would be an even bigger mistake Certainly now that council has over invested in the parks plan step should be taken to ensure it is best explained to the public It is therefore necessary the consultants appear at the public meetings to ensure council s investment is properly explained to the public So rather than strive for the economy of saving an ad at this late date council should be demanding to know how the total cost of the report got so high in the first place especially without guarantees of public appearances by the consultants Chicken producers deserve real support Chicken feed there more than that at in the current dispute embroiling local farmers and management of the Maple Lodge Farms chicken processing plant near Norval Last week the plant was the site of picketing by angry chicken producers who argue that because of processors like Maple Lodge who import large numbers of US chickens Ontario farmers are overstocked Brampton Georgetown MP John McDermid says the farmers should have skipped the picket and defends Maple Lodge Mr says the producers picket a plant that em ploys over people Mr McDermid tells farmers now unable to sell their season toil that the risk you take when you go into business Maybe so but we think far mers would find their risk a little more fair if they were only com against Canadian poultry farmers Certainly it would seem local farmers have a justifiable gripe if they are unable to sell their stock at the same time Amen can stock is pouring across the border Ironically enough the Con provincial government appears to agree with this stand and are now at odds with their federal party members Provincial agricultural minister Lorne Henderson has set up a meeting with the nonelected federal minister of trade Robert to discuss the problem The ousted Liberal govern had planned to create a national market board for the purpose of regulating imports While we re all reluctant to see yet another federal agency created and although a board may not be the answer certainly the two ministers should take a hard look at this and other possible solutions to the problem Canadian farmers ha vet enough difficulties making a living these days The government should not be helping stack the deck against them While owners of Maple Lodge may argue that earlier in the season it was difficult to obtain Canadian chickens now there is a glut Surely federal and provincial agencies should be combining to see that a well planned approach to agriculture will result in a relatively steady supply of Canadian chickens supplemented American imports when the demands it All levels of Canadian government say they are pledged to helping maintain agriculture as a of life this country good planning ild go a long way towards making this pledge a reality A sigh of relief greets lease Historically minded people of Georgetown heaved a collective sigh of relief last week with news the towns historic and attractive CN station has been granted at least a stay of execution In a letter to council read last week CN vice president A Williams announced the signing of a new five year lease between the company and the Toronto Area Transit Operating Authority Residents were Justifiably concerned earlier this year when applied to close their ticket agency in the old station We re glad that CN and who handle GO have taken steps to ensure a practical use for the facility Certainly there is no reason the stately old station not have a useful purpose as well as fill historical need in this com Too many Ontario com have allowed their old landmark stations to fall to the wreckers ball It s good to sec that at least for the duration of CN five year lease with TATOA the Georgetown station will remain a stately testament to our railroad past when steel rails not highways
