April ON THE HOMfcFRONT- we a soft society By SUSAN Herald Colnmttlf I had intended to write a column this week a reprieve from the somewhat heavy stuff of violence and drugs I have been indulging in over the past few weeks However lappeartohavcbecomecaughtuplnatidal wave that is not about to relinquish me Just yet First I would like to sincerely thank all the very kind hearted people who responded with letters and expressions of sympathy on the victimization of my brother in a gang beating I am happy to report that he Is progressing very well considering the amount of damage inflicted upon him My mailman must have had to put in a little overtime as there has also been a large amount of feedback on the school drug situation amounting to a go for it attitude on the part of the parents from whom I have heard Now there may be at first hand a wide disparity between drug use and an isolated beating however I believe they are inextricably tied In to each other The widespread use drugs is going to result in greater tides of violence within our society Break and enters holdups and robberies are often committed to feed an expensive drug habit and heaven help the person who gets in the way of someone whose brain has been scrambled and shorttin by the use of drugs SOFT SOCIETY Although many of today s pressures are real wehuve turned into a soft society I am blaming a lax society for the fact that my brother as an innocent victim of crime has had to purchase a guard dog as a safety precaution against retribution by a gang of seven only two of whom ore behind bars and with our present ball system who knows how long they will be held even with a charge of attempted murder against them To my mind it is the perpetrators of the crime who should be looking over their shoulders not the victims Wc allow our kids to dictate to us in the home because it is easier than the constant battling at the end of a working day we sob over the children In Juvenile Court rather than putting the fear of God Into them while they arc still young enough to get the message and the schools Ignore troublemakers because of bad vibes from the minority of parents who don t want to hear about it We incarcerate at a minimum cost of a year a sum that would keen most families going punks who would wilt at a taste of the lash while they laugh a prison sentence where they merely take graduate in crime We have become victims of a society for whom for every violent action against the innocent there Is a logical Their mother inhibited them they had an argument with their father their girl ditched them sob sob Sure ere are deprived kids there have been since the world began but excusing their social behaviour Is not going to cure them Excusing them on those grounds is only going io reinforce their idea that the world owes them LOOK BACK How many of you look back in awe and reverence at a father who would not let you depart from the straight and narrow How many of you believe that the armed services call up would provide many of our unemployed 18 year olds with some skills self pride and much needed discipline How many of you would appreciate a telephone call from the school if they suspected your child was into drugs or other trouble Do you really agree a child of IB applying for a legal abortion Is not a parental responsibility Don you want to know Don t you have the right as a parent to know Arc we giving up or copping out of every res pons ib lity For heavens sake turn off All In the Family or Hockey Night In Canada Just long enough to raise a roar of outrage at where we arc heading or you Just may find yourself turning on the boob tube behind barred and bolted doors I ore Society Havewe become to the point where we arc totally gutless Ballinafad
